BRITISH SHOW HORSE ASSOCIATION QUALIFIERS
Held under the rules of the British Show Horse Association. Horses must be registered with
the Association and all Owners, Exhibitors and Riders must be Association Members.
Riders must be 15 years of age or older. Registration numbers must be quoted on entry
form.
Classes 41, 42, 43, 47, 48, 52 & 53 are qualifiers for The Royal International Horse Show.
The first prize winner will qualify to compete at the final. If already qualified the second will
qualify, if the first and second are already qualified then the third will go forward.
Horses competing at the RIHS and qualifying shows in Hunter section of The Sport Horse
Breeding of Great Britain at their Affiliated Shows cannot compete in Hack, Cobs and Riding
Horse classes at the same show, on the same day and vice versa. This does not apply to
SHB(GB) Ridden Sport Horse classes.
The three highest placed prize winners in all Open affiliated classes will qualify to compete
in the BSHA Classic Supreme Classes at the National Championship Show in September
2017.
The BSHA offer a Novice, Young Rider and Amateur rosette in each Open class and a
Champion rosette for each section (with the exception of open Working Show Horse, Ladies
Side Saddle and HOYS Hunter Classes). The association will also award an Amateur Home
Produced rosette in all affiliated Open cob classes. These rosettes have been kindly
sponsored by TSG, Mr L Turley and the Maxi Cob rosette has been kindly sponsored by Mr
and Mrs E McCourt. The awards will go down the line; there is no limit on how many of
these rosettes can be claimed in a year.

certificate. Competitors can apply for a Day Ticket by downloading an application form from
the BSHA website.
SPORT HORSE BREEDING OF GREAT BRITAIN
All hunter classes will be judged under the rules of the 2017 Sport Horse Breeding of Great
Britain.
Class 33-38 horses must be on the SHB(GB) basic ID and owners and riders must be

Classes 34-37 are qualifying events for the 2017 RIHS and only horses registered on the
current year Show Hunter Register are eligible to enter. Registration numbers must be
quoted on entry forms and owners and riders must be members of the society.

than second in its class will qualify.
The judge is empowered to transfer any exhibit in the light or middleweight class to a heavier
weight if he considers that the exhibit exceeds the specified weight otherwise no animal may
be shown in any class other than that or those in which it is entered.
No horse may be entered in both a Ridden Hunter and Ridden Hack or Riding Horse Class
at the same show. This does not apply to Working Hunter and Ridden Sport Horse
classes.
In relation to Headwear "It is strongly recommended that competitors aged 18 or over wear skull caps or hats
with safety harness in accordance with the current approved BSI or European
Standard, in order to minimise risk of head injury. It is mandatory for competitors
under the age of 18 to wear such skull caps or hats".

breeding and hunter pony breeding sections. Silver Medal Rosettes are only awarded when
the Owner of the champion pony is a Qualifying or Life Member of the NPS. If the Owner of
the Champion pony is not a Member, the rosette may be awarded to the Reserve Champion.
If the Champion pony has previously qualified it is still entitled to the Silver Medal Rosette
but the Qualification Card goes to the Reserve Champion pony, provided the Owner of that
pony is a Member of the NPS. The Silver Medal Rosette and the Qualification can be
awarded no lower than first Reserve. Membership cards must be shown in the ring to

RULES
The Judges decision is final
The Committee will not be held responsible for any loss, damage arising from accident or other
cause and they reserve the right to refuse any entry without stating a reason.
Any exhibitor found leading, riding or driving outside the ring to the danger of the public will be
removed from the showground.
Any objection must be made in writing and delivered to the Secretary’s office together with a
deposit of £15.00 which will be forfeited should the objection prove unfounded.
No person shall enter the ring other than exhibitors, judges and those authorised to do so by
the Committee.
No entry fee will be refunded. This rule will be strictly adhered to.
No substitute entries will be allowed.
Every effort will be made to avoid the clashing of classes but should this arise, through any
reason, exhibitors must choose which class they wish to compete in. No refund of entry fees
will be made.
An exhibitor may not knowingly exhibit a pony bred, sold, leased or produced by the judge,
his/her immediate family, or his/her employer. A rider may not ride in a class judged by
someone for whom he or she has produced a pony in the same year (an exhibitor is the owner,
the lessee, or the person who produces and/or shows the pony).
It is suggested that where height certificates are applicable that they are available for
inspection.
All ridden exhibits must be four years old and over. Except as stated.
Hard hats must be worn at all times when mounted on the showground.
The Committee reserve the right to exclude any animal from the show which is considered unfit
to be exhibited or behaving in a dangerous manner.
Although it is not a strict rule of the show it is hoped that exhibitors will have their horses/ponies
vaccinated against equine flu.
Exhibitors must be properly dressed in the ring, both ridden and in-hand classes and it is hoped
that their turnout will reflect that of their exhibits.
The Committee reserve the right to cancel or amalgamate any class.
All stallions and colts aged 2 years and over to be in possession of a Stallion Licence, unless
otherwise governed by their individual Breed Society. For Highlands, Dales, Exmoor and
Dartmoor this is 3 years and over. For Shetlands and Welsh this is 4 years and over.
All ponies must be registered in the main stud book of their respective breeds and the
registration number must be shown on the entry form. All exhibits must adhere to the heights
laid down by their appropriate Breed Society.
In all ridden Mountain and Moorland classes spurs are not allowed.
In all classes canes/whips must not exceed 75cms (30 inches) and if misused in the
opinion of the judge the exhibitor may be sent out of the ring and may be reported to the
National Pony Society Disciplinary Committee.
Handlers of stallions and colts must have attained their 14 th birthday before 1st January
of the current year.
Riders of small breeds (Dartmoor, Exmoor, Shetland, Welsh Section A, B & C) stallions
must have attained their 12th birthday before 1st January of the current year. Riders of
large breeds (Welsh Section D, Connemara, Highland, Fell, Dales & New Forest) stallions
must have attained their 14th birthday before 1st January of the current year.
Handlers of ponies in in-hand classes aged 14 years and under must wear correctly
secured current BS skull caps/riding hats
Exhibitors found to be behaving in an unseemly manner or using foul language will be
requested to leave the showground.
Qualifying rounds for most NPS competitions are open to ponies owned by NPS
members and non-members but only ponies owned by adult qualifying or life NPS
members are eligible to qualify for the final of the competition. The highest placed pony
owned by an NPS member in each class will qualify for the Final. Where this pony has
already qualified the pony standing next in line which is owned by an NPS member and
has not already qualified receives the qualification. Qualification may go no lower than
3rd place. NPS Non qualifying members will be required to upgrade to qualifying
members to enter the Final.
