yr 2 general newsletter summer term 2017

Forest Schools
This will continue on
Tuesday mornings.
We will continue to link
Animals
our science
lessons into
the Forest School
sessions.
Helpers
If any parent or other
relative would like to come
in and work with the
children, please do let us
know.
Topic
Our topic for the first half of the term is Health and
Growth where we will discuss how animals have offspring
that grow into adults and think about how the children
have changed since they were babies. We will look at
various life cycles and find out what animals need to
survive and study balanced diets and exercise, which help
keep humans fit and healthy. The second half of the term
is based around Light and Dark. This is a great topic to
join in with at home as you can star gaze and also be on
the look-out for nocturnal animals. Our class texts are
The Owl who was afraid of the Dark and The Lighthouse
Keeper’s Lunch.
Trips
I am planning a Florence
Nightingale trip to
Claydon House and will
give you further details
nearer to the date.
Reading Why not try:
• Getting your child to think of questions
they can ask you to test if you’ve been
listening!
• Asking how they think a particular
character in a story might be feeling.
• Asking them to tell you what they would
do if they were in the story, or what they
think is going to happen next. These
questions encourage your child to say
more than ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
Communication
In May the children will be taking the new
KS1 SATs assessments. Please ensure that
your child is in school during this time.
As the weather improves (hopefully),
please make sure that your child comes to
school with a sun hat and sun cream.
If you wish to come and see me then please
make an appointment to see me after
school, Wednesdays and Thursdays are
best for me. Thank you.
Maths
In maths we will be using place value to support adding
and subtracting numbers using partitioning and open
number lines. We will also be measuring capacity using
litres and millilitres. This is a good opportunity for
maths at home with your child, either when cooking in
the kitchen or having fun at bath time.
We are continuing to practise number bonds to 100 and
multiplication tables for x2, x3, x5 and x10.
Please support your child with telling the time, using
both analogue and digital clocks, telling the time to the
nearest 5 minutes.
Learning Logs
Homework will continue to be
from the topic webs and is
due in on Wednesdays.
Homework should take
approximately 20 – 30
minutes and is always based
on the work the children have
been doing in class. If you are
unsure of what to do then
please come and speak to me.
PE
PE is on a Monday and
Wednesday afternoon. It will
be games and gymnastics.
Please ensure that all items
of PE kit are in school for
these days and are named.
