DVD and video collection

FACTSHEET
DVD and video collection
Learning and Information Service
The Mountbatten Library has a wide range of course-related DVDs, Digital Videos and
videotapes. There is also a small collection of tapes at the Warsash Library. Anyone wishing for
material to be transferred between campuses should make a request, giving us one week’s
notice.
How can I find which titles are available?
The Collection contains commercial releases and recordings from TV including single
programmes, series and films.
Check the Library Catalogue first. It gives details of all titles in the Collection, plus the shelf
number. You will find many more titles on the Catalogue, rather than just looking on the
shelves.... because what you want (or find) might be a Digital Video.
How is the DVD & Video Collection arranged?
The titles are arranged on the shelves in the same numerical order as the books. PLEASE
NOTE: Digital Videos are not available on the shelves.
What is a Digital Video?
Digital videos or DVs are programmes and films recorded online from TV and stored on the
MAVIS video server. These are generally recordings since July 2008 although we have converted
older material to DV on demand. The video server uses Freeview so we can record anything on
those channels. We have 3,000+ DVs: more are added each week. They are viewed through the
Library catalogue.
PLEASE NOTE: DVs can only be viewed in the UK, and you are required to enter your University
username/password.
The Library policy is to convert popular/well-used tv recordings on tape and DVD to DVs and
also to provide Freeview DV versions of films purchased on DVD or video. We can also convert
off-air VHS tapes/DVDs to digital format on request. For copyright reasons we cannot convert
purchased videos/DVDs to DVs.

Can I take items out of the Library?
The majority of DVDs/videos can be borrowed for one week. Some items are restricted
e.g. reference and one day loans and will be labelled clearly to show this. With the
exception of the one day loans, items can be renewed online via MyLibrary books or the
Library portal.
Are there viewing facilities in the Library?
There are two viewing stations for small group and individual use located on Floor 2A
next to the collection. These offer VHS, DVD and Blu-ray facilities and access to the
catalogue to view DVs. There are also large screens which can be used for DVDs in the
bookable rooms down in OC.
Digital Videos can be viewed through student and staff PCs, MACs and laptops e.g. in the
Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) or in teaching rooms. You will need your own
headphones as the sound is generally set to mute.
Most Digital Videos can also be viewed off-campus; you only require Internet access to
view at home – just log onto the University Portal as usual, and then search the Library
catalogue. PLEASE NOTE: Open University (OU) programmes are for on-campus viewing only.
