Principals Report
Once again we’ve had an extremely busy but very
successful Term 1. Over 400 visitors come to the
school for the STEM Launch and to tour our facilities
and see our students involved in various programs and
activities across the College as part of our Open Night.
A terrific atmosphere prevailed and we had some great
feedback from many visitors, the tour groups appeared
really engaged in the different sessions and displays. I
would like to thank Daniel Mulino Member for Eastern
Victoria who represented the Department at our STEM Launch. I would also
like to thank the many staff, students, student leaders, school councilors and
parents who volunteered to help showcase our school and provide
refreshments on the night. Special thanks to our Transition Co-ordinator
Chantelle Steffens and Assistant Principal Chris Quinn.

It was a pleasure to recently visit the Year 7 Camp at Phillip Island. I can
honestly say we have a great bunch of Year 7 students this year who have
many skills and talents in a variety of areas! My thanks to all the staff that
ensured a smooth operation, a camp enjoyed by all who participated. A big
thanks also to the Year 10 student leaders who did an outstanding job
working with the Year 7’s and running the activities.

It’s hard to believe the end of term is upon us already. There have been so
many highlights this term including Swimming and Athletics Carnivals,
Assemblies, Excursions, Incursions and Music events to name just a few. I
hope you enjoy reading about these elsewhere in the newsletter or on our
website, Facebook and Instagram pages. I would like to strongly encourage
all our students and families to connect with us on any platform of our Social
Media as with the technological onset it is a great way to stay informed and
is superseding other traditional methods of communication and will continue
to do so.
I would like to wish all students and their families a pleasant, relaxing and
safe break in the holidays and a very Happy Easter.

Year 7 Volleyball
Best and Fairest: Taylah McClernon
Taylah, improved her skills throughout the day, with a powerful serve that always made
it accurately over the net. Taylah became a key player during points, returning serves
and vital passes in the long rallies that happened during matches, especially during the
final against Dromana. Taylah was always positive in her manner towards her
teammates and encouraged others throughout the day.
Summary of the day:
There were six teams that arrived to play on the day, all schools represented. Of those,
Dromana had the largest team, keeping them fresh with many opportunities to rest
players throughout the day.
We played in a pool with Sommerville and Rosebud to win in straight sets against both teams. Putting us through to the Final against
Dromana, who had played against Mornington and Mt Eliza.
All girls were incredibly supportive of each other and improved their skills throughout the day. We saw some accurate power serves
keep us in front from Emily Green Tamara Potter and our most experienced player, and chief coach and encourager on the day, Bree
Reptik. Some excellent and powerful returns from Sarah Cleaver won points at crucial moments. While Taylah McClearnon was the
all round stand out, consistently serving accurately and mastering the dig to pass to team mates when some of the longest rallies were
in play.
The behavior of this team was exemplary, gracious both in defeat and when winning. There were supportive of each other and
congratulatory of the great play on both sides of the net!
Well done ‘Westo’!!
Year 7 Girls Cricket
On Wednesday February 15th the Year 7 girls played cricket at Emil Madsen in a round robin competition. The girls won the first game
against Dromana by 7 runs, then convincingly beat Mt Eliza by 70 runs. The third game was a mini final against Mornington who also
won their 2 games. The girls lost by 30 runs. The grand final was a different affair with some good bowling by both teams keeping the
batting scores down. The final score was Mornington won by 7 runs. Best Player Ying Paking with some terrific batting, fielding and
bowling. Well done girls on your sportsmanship and team co-operation. The girls conduct on the day was outstanding.

Southern Peninsula Division Swimming Carnival
On Thursday March 2nd the Interschool Swimming team competed at the combined Southern Peninsula Division swimming
carnival at Pines Forest pool. Over the course of the day a number of students swam well beyond what was asked. These
students deserve as much credit as our place getters. All students performed to their personal bests but were outclassed
by a stronger well-trained opposition. Thanks to staff, parents and students for their support. Again some students did not
attend which makes it so much more demanding on just a few.
Overall Western Port came fifth, a great team effort.
Congratulations to these ribbon winners:

Southern Metropolitan Region Lawn
Bowls Finals
The Southern Metropolitan Region Lawn Bowls Finals were held on
Monday March 6th four students competed at Hampton Bowls
Club. The competition was separated into 2 pools of 4 teams
following a Round Robin format. The matches consisted of 8 ends
or 50 minutes whichever came first.
First match was a win against Mac Rob 8 to 5. Second was the
same score beating Melbourne intermediate. Last game to get into
the finals was against McKinnon Senior. The boys were 5 shots
down but came back with some terrific bowling to win 7 to 5.
The final was against the other pool winner Glen Eira which was 10
ends. It was closely fought with the lead changing constantly with
the end result being a draw. An additional end had to be played
and unfortunately the team lost.
Congratulations to the pennant runners ups Matt Foy, Aaron Whitford, Bailey Hastie and Harry Hansen. Well done!
Project 9 Term 1- Lifestyle- Term 1’s focus is
on Lifestyle and how important it is to maintain a
healthy, balanced life. Students participated in
workshops with Reach, Shed 11, and the Community
Health Centre, gaining knowledge about their local
community health services.
Students had a visit from the Victorian Laryngectomy
Association, they shared with us the effects smoking
has had on them and their families. Students also
had the chance to get active and have a “bounce” at
Xtreme Air, as well as enjoying the challenge swing
and flying fox at Somers Camp. It is safe to say Year 9
students had a busy but fun Term 1.

Harmony Day
On March 21st the Senior VCAL Class ran a series of diversity themed activities for Harmony Day 2017.
What is Harmony day?
Harmony Day is a celebration of diversity and community understanding. It is a national program that aims to break down barriers
and help make our communities more inclusive. ‘Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration of
our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.’
Our Year 12 VCAL students worked very hard to develop the activities planned for the event and tried to capture the essence of
Harmony day by creating a range of fun and engaging activities for all to participate in.
The activities that the year 8’s participated in included Wheelchair Basketball, Aboriginal painting, Indoor Soccer, Food Tasting and
Rugby. As well as the sessions, the Senior VCAL Class also held a Sausage Sizzle.
The feedback from students and teachers was extremely positive, particularly for the wheelchair basketball. Hopefully by
participating in the day, the Year 8 students were able to experience a range of diverse activities that taught them the value of
inclusiveness in the community.
