Speech Language & Communication Support for 5-11s Elklan total training pack A highly successful accredited course for education staff, especially teaching assistants. It provides understanding and strategies to develop the communication skills and oracy of all children, but especially those with speech, language and communication needs. This course also enables staff to develop all children who fail to make adequate progress because they have insufficient listening and attention, vocabulary or narrative skills struggle with a phonic approach to literacy because of underdeveloped early phonological awareness struggle to mature socially/emotionally lacking social communication and interactive skills The Course The course is run for 14 participants over 10 afternoons.. Schools and TAs have indicated that they find it more useful and effective if they attend as a pair from a school. It is ‘apt’ accredited with 9 credits. The training takes a workshop type approach, utilising video samples, practical activities and discussion. The participants submit a portfolio demonstrating the studied techniques and practical strategies which they have carried out with pupils in their school. What do learners receive ? Teaching from a speech and language therapist The ELKLAN manual ‘Language Builders’ which forms the core reading material for the course. It is full of practical advice, activities and ideas. Support needed to write a portfolio to achieve accreditation through ‘apt’ Opportunities to meet other education staff, discuss techniques and receive mutual support. What is communication ? identification of the processes including a range of difficulties Understanding non-verbal communication, listening, attention and using visual strategies non verbal communication behaviours support strategies for poor listening and attention Developing memory skills how memory works and how to support different learning styles use of mind mapping to aid learning in the classroom. Developing and facilitating the understanding and learning of language concepts modifying adult language to improve understanding using the technique of ‘Information Carrying Words’ to develop understanding differentiation to meet the needs of individual children Developing understanding and verbal reasoning skills use of a language scheme to develop verbal reasoning and enable children to answer ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions, make inferences, sequence ideas and make predictions Promoting vocabulary development understanding how children learn new words a range of strategies to support learning and retention of vocabulary Encouraging expressive language development techniques to develop syntax (grammar) and narrative skills issues for children with EAL Promoting effective communication and social skills the effects adult interaction patterns have on children’s communication identification and promotion of skills required for successful social communication and interaction Supporting children with unclear speech and the link between speech, reading and writing the development of speech sounds supporting children with unclear speech the importance and components of phonological awareness Stammering supporting children who stammer Application of all strategies learnt- making a poster to present evidence of applying knowledge during everyday activities cascade knowledge Learners will need to spend about 4 hours per week on their portfolio. This is about • 3 hours discussing, reading, observing, planning and carrying out practical activities • 1 hour writing up assignments (there are no long essays or extended writing) Learners will also need web access to download material and templates.
