δ Scuti and γ Dor stars in COROT

Progress Report on
Automatic classification of light curves
Rafael Garrido
HISTORICAL SKETCH:
-At CW7 (Granada) the SC decided to identify the people that could be
interested on LC classification, a part of the N3 final product.
1.-Classificator itself
2.-How to feed it
-Two teams were identified to be interested on the first activity:
the Leuven team (Jonas Debosscher) and the Madrid team (Luis M. Sarro).
-Both groups agreed to carry out an exercise to test their classificators.
HISTORICAL SKETCH (Cont.):
Rules of the exercise :
1.-The Hipparcos data base is the source to learn from
2.-I choose a subsample of the Hipparcos catalogue, which should not
to be included to teach the classifier, and then used to compare the
performance of the codes.
3.-A sample of the OGLE catalogue was proposed for classification by
both teams.
-Results were available at the CW8 (Toulouse) only from the Madrid
team.
-One week later I received the first results (corresponding to the
Hipparcos catalogue) from the Leuven team
HISTORICAL SKETCH (Cont.):
-New results from the Leuven team are available now
(Nov ’05: last week).

-Problems with β Lyrae eclipsing binaries.

-Ellipsoidal variables with the Leuven code ?

Suggestions :
-Organized into two (closely collaborative) groups :
A) Physical definition of new (and existing ?) types of variables
led by the Leuven team
B) Mathematical and technical issues led by the Madrid team
--New types of variables have to be included in the original Hipparcos
classification: γ Dor, WD, solar-like, active stars, etc…
-”Official” classification tool will be finished before launch
Improve classification scheme after each long run
-Everybody is invited to participate, particularly PI of the AP.
(I’ll send an e-mail with details ...)
