FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GVK CSIA receives Airport Carbon Accreditation Level-3 (OPTIMIZATION) accreditation by
ACI
Mumbai, March 09, 2015: GVK Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), today announced
achieving the prestigious, the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 3 optimization accreditation
honour by the International agency, Airport Council International (ACI). This accolade serves as
recognition of CSIA’s continuing focus on embracing environment-friendly measures in general and
relentlessly working on reducing carbon emission levels in particular.
GVK CSIA has consistently strived to reduce the carbon emissions from its operational activities and
as a holistic and meaningful approach has also inculcated this approach into its operational
stakeholders. The company has earlier achieved ACA for Level 1 MAPPING in 2012 and upgraded to
Level 2 REDUCTION in 2013 which was effectively renewed in 2014. The latest accreditation serves
as a testimony to the company’s success achieved in the chosen area of focus and places CSIA along
with 6 airports in APAC & 23 across the globe to have received such an accreditation under this
category.
On the occasion of achieving the accreditation, Mr. Rajiv Jain, CEO, GVK CSIA said, “Inclusive growth achieved by meaningful sustainable initiatives has been a strong organization focus at GVK CSIA. We are pleased to achieve this accreditation from an independent global agency of repute i.e. ACI. We are now even more motivated to pursue with vigour our carbon emission objectives and thank our value chain partners who share our belief and without whom this achievement would not have been a holistic success.” As part of the upgradation to ACA Level OPTIMIZATION, CSIA widened the scope of carbon footprint
to include third party stakeholders and their respective emissions inorder to ensure an overall check
on the carbon emissions. Under this focus, activities related to airport landing & takeoff, staff
business & office travel, passenger movement, ground support operational activities, electricity
consumption, fuel consumption, etc. where optimised from a sustainability perspective and the
resultant carbon emission data being independently verified by M/s. Bureau Veritas Certification
India Pvt Ltd.
Mr. Narendra Hosabettu – Head, Environment, MIAL, commented “We are committed to embrace and set higher benchmarks on the sustainability quotient. At MIAL, we take pride in measuring our growth on a triple bottom line matrix. Carbon accreditation level of OPTIMISATION has been possible due to consistent efforts by all our stakeholders and makes our resolve towards a sustainable environment even stronger. Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is an independent programme administered by WSP
Environment & Energy, an International Consultancy appointed by ACI EUROPE to enforce the
accreditation criteria for airports on an annual basis.
Note: Level 1 requires disclosure of carbon emission from the direct activities of the airport operations, i.e. fuel and electricity consumption. Level 2 requires demonstration of efforts and results thereof in reducing the carbon emission from the activities identified in Level 1. Level 3 requires the organisation to meet not only the requirements of “Mapping” and “Reduction”, but also assessment of carbon footprint of third party stakeholders working at the airport.
