“Intentional Teaching Turns the World”
TYCA-SE 2016
Call for Proposals
On May 1st, 1982, over 100,000 people attended the first day of the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Then President Ronald Reagan welcomed the crowds on opening day, and during the next 6 months,
over 11 million people made the journey to Knoxville to visit the exhibits, including the iconic Knoxville
Sunsphere building, centered on the Fair’s theme of “Energy Turns the World.” We are excited to
announce that the 1982 World’s Fair serves as the inspiration for the 2016 meeting of the Two-Year
College English Association-Southeast (TYCA-SE) in Knoxville, Tennessee, which will focus on the theme
“Intentional Teaching Turns the World.” As the organizers of the 1982 event told the world, “You’ve Got
To Be There.”
The 2016 TYCA-SE conference will accept proposals that address the teaching of English in the two-year
college or that center around teaching the first two years of English at a four-year institution. More
specifically, we seek proposals that consider the idea of intentional teaching. Why do we choose to
teach in the ways that we do? In what ways can our teaching decisions change and influence the lives of
our students? Which moments in your teaching career have most impacted your students? Was it the
time you integrated service-learning into your course? That semester you taught your composition
course in a city abroad? Was it the assignment you created that had a focus on social media and
argumentation? Bring these moments to TYCA-SE 2016.
Much like the World’s Fair showcased its exhibitors’ best and brightest innovations, we hope to
showcase the strongest in intentional teaching from around the southeast region. We encourage
presentations with a foundation in pedagogical theory, but which focus on practical techniques for some
of the following situations:
 using cutting-edge technology in the classroom
 fostering lively classroom discussions
 considering real-world applications inside and outside of the classroom
 reimagining tired assignments
 leading course redesign
 introducing new texts
 incorporating writing tutors into the classroom
 working with ESL students
 teaching online
 creating classroom community
We hope that this conference will energize and motivate the Southeast region’s two-year college English
teachers to turn the worlds of their students in ways that are intentional, innovative, and inspirational.
