BOARD POSITION DESCRIPTION
First Congregational United Church of Christ
Eugene, Oregon
PURPOSE OF BOARD
The Board, in cooperation with the staff, is responsible for providing vision and direction to the
Church’s ministry on behalf of the congregation.
REQUIREMENTS
Each Board member:
1. must be a member of First Congregational Church and have previous committee, task force,
or leadership experience at the Church.
2. must receive the endorsement of three other Church members.
3. is expected to attend Board meetings year-round on the third Tuesday of each month
12:00-1:30 p.m.
4. is expected to serve on one or more standing committees or task forces in addition to
attending Board meetings.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Each Board member should:

be knowledgeable or interested in budget planning and analysis.
be comfortable with detail-oriented tasks.
be flexible and give a high priority to meetings and demands on time as needed to
accomplish the Church’s mission.

6. be committed to implementing our Church’s vision.
7. have a “sense” of our Church – understanding who we are as a people and as part of the
larger community.
DUTIES (from the Bylaws)
1. The Church Board (the Board) shall have ultimate responsibility, after the Congregation,
for leadership of the Church.
2. The Board shall provide spiritual leadership and visualize the entire mission and program
of the Church, doing long-range planning and program evaluation, and recommending to
the members and committees such action as may be necessary, or requiring particular
action by staff and committees.
3. The Board shall foster intra-church communication, coordination, and liaison with
committees.

4. The Board shall have fiscal responsibility, including but not limited to, preparing an annual
budget, controlling disbursement of Church funds, and determining the number of special
offerings or fundraisers.
5. The Board shall be responsible for establishing personnel policies.
6. The Board shall make all appointments to the standing committees and may establish and
appoint members to other committees and task forces for specific purposes.
7. The Board shall establish a grievance procedure to receive and investigate complaints by
members and the staff against other members or the staff. Complaints may be made to any
member of the Board.
TERM OF OFFICE
Board members serve for three years.
