Procedure for taking blood samples using the electronic
Bloodhound system.
EAST Cheshire NHS Trust has instituted an electronic system for taking blood samples in
order to make the process significantly safer and more efficient.
The yellow buttons on the front and both sides operate the laser barcode reader.
For all other operations use the touch screen.
If the screen is blank touch the screen.
When using the barcode reader, press and hold the yellow button, hold the reader close to
the barcode and move away slowly. The reader will go off when it reads the barcode.
Log in using your barcode, read it by pressing a yellow button and pointing the laser reader.
1. Enter your password.
2. Press confirm
3. Choose ‘phlebotomy’.
4. Choose printer by pressing ‘OK’.
5. Choose ward press ‘tick’.
6. Read the patients wristband by pressing a yellow button and pointing the laser.
7. Verbally confirm the details or press ‘patient unconscious’ and press ‘confirm’.
8. Choose number of labels and press ‘print’.
9. Press ‘OK’.
10. NEVER VERIFY THE LABEL BEFORE TAKING THE SAMPLE.
11. NEVER APPLY THE LABELS TO THE SAMPLE TUBE BEFORE TAKING THE
BLOOD.
12. NEVER TAKE THE SAMPLE BEFORE CARRYING OUT THE ABOVE
ELECTRONIC PATIENT CHECK.
13. Take the blood sample, apply the label and read the label with the laser this verifies
the label.
14. Check the number is ‘verified’ and press ‘confirm’.
15. Press ‘ok’.
Once a member of staff has been deemed competent with the system all future transfusion
samples must be taken using the system, all other samples may also be taken using the
system.
Trouble shooting problems:
1. The PDA logs out of the patient sampling.
You have taken over 15mins. Restart from the beginning but do not leave the patient
2. The PDA will not validate the labels.
The cursor is not in the correct place. Tap in the box below the outstanding and
verified boxes.
