Half-day Pre-conference SymPoSium: Cognitive monitoring of

Half-day Pre-conference Symposium:
Cognitive monitoring of children with CP
– A tool for provision of support for
learning and social participation. Workshop with discussion
Pre-conference symposium in connection with the European Academy of Childhood Disability
Annual meeting in Newcastle upon Tyre, UK October 10-12 - www.eacd2013.org.
The aim of this pre-conference symposium is to create awareness of the cognitive difficulties associated with cerebral palsy (CP) and the necessity of detecting cognitive impairments
in order to be able to provide adequate support for the learning and social participation of
children with CP. The background is research findings that a significant number of children
with CP have cognitive deficits and lower social participation. This research will be presented
as a pretext for the challenges facing children with CP and teachers in relation to inclusion and
learning. Next, the Nordic initiative “Cognitive monitoring of Children with CP (CP Cog)” will
be presented. This initiative is coordinated with the follow-up program for children with CP
(CPUP/CPOP) which is running in the Scandinavian countries. The pre-conference symposium
is planned as a workshop to enable participants to reflect and discuss current research and
experiences about how to ensure detection of and remediation for the cognitive difficulties
these children may experience.
