Kingspan
EnvelopeFirst™
Today, the demand for energy efficient buildings
is greater than ever before, driven by mandatory
legislation and escalating energy costs –
forecast to double by 2030.
Kingspan offers a wide range of building envelope systems that
can provide significant performance benefits towards the overall
energy efficiency of a building and the optimum specification,
size and amount of HVAC equipment – the largest end use of
energy and source of GHG emissions in commercial buildings.
With EnvelopeFirst™, heating and cooling energy demand can be
reduced by up to 40% with smaller, less-costly more energy
efficient HVAC systems.
Rising to these challenges, Kingspan has
developed EnvelopeFirst™.
EnvelopeFirst™ is a design strategy for optimising a building’s
energy efficiency and the first step on the route to Carbon Neutral
Buildings, providing property investors, owners, landlords and
tenants with affordable, energy efficient buildings.
The next step, once the building envelope is as efficient as
possible, is the implementation of optimised HVAC and building
services. Finally, the integration of renewable technologies
enables a building to achieve carbon neutral targets,
and even become a net-energy producer.
The most effective, and affordable, energy saving measure available
to a building is the integration of a high performance building
envelope system that provides guaranteed insulation continuity and
thermal and airtightness performance.

“Building insulation is the most cost-effective
solution to reduce energy and greenhouse gases.”*
Whole Building Design
A building’s envelope, services and renewables
must be considered on a ‘whole building design’
basis in order to optimise energy performance
to achieve efficiency and sustainability targets.
The design, construction and/or retrofitting of high-performance
low- and carbon neutral buildings demands an integrated, ‘whole
building design’ (WBD) approach. In comparison to an elemental
design and construction processes, WBD examines the integration
of all building components, systems and equipment to determine
how they work together to save energy and reduce the buildings
overall impact on the environment.
WBD considers all impacts and influences associated with a
building: site, orientation, energy, materials, acoustics, indoor air
quality, and natural resources.

covered in shrink wrapping for added protection during transport.
Insulation Core
The core of the Kingspan K-Dek roof panel range is an
environmentally sustainable Kingspan polyisocyanurate (PIR)
insulation which is non-deleterious with zero Ozone Depletion
Potential. The rigid PIR insulation is closed cell and CFC/HCFC-free.
The number of panels in each pack depends on panel length and
weight. Typical pack height is 1200mm (8 sheets).
The auto adhesive properties of the core bond to the external and
internal faces, providing strength and rigidity to the panels.

Kingspan Safepro2
Fall Protection System
Kingspan Safepro2 is a new innovative fall
protection system, designed to protect both
the worker and the roof to which it is fixed.
Kingspan Safepro2 is the only horizontal life line
approved by Kingspan for installation on
Kingspan insulated panels.
Features & Benefits
■
Safepro2 comprises a high-strength stainless steel cable,
supported on energy-absorbing roof anchor posts. Safepro2 is
certified to AS NZS 1891.2 & 1891.4, EN 795 and OHSA 1926.
■
Safepro2 roof anchors incorporate Force Minimisation Technology,
which limits the load transferred to the roof, in a fall arrest event,
to less than 6kN. This is a significant improvement over older types
of force control posts which applied 10kN or more to the roof.
■
Safepro2 has fixing and sealing details specifically for Kingspan
K-Dek, Trapezoidal, Foilback and Lo-Pitch insulated panels.
Safepro2 is the only such system tested and proven with current
Kingspan insulated panel specifications.
■
■
Safepro2 can be installed during or after construction to most
roof systems, without access to the underside of the roof.
Safepro2 is highly suitable for providing safe access to
roof-mounted PV and other solar systems.
■
■
The Kingspan Safepro2 system is available globally including
Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe,
North America and Canada, the Middle East and Hong Kong.

Construction Requirements
Secondary
Fasteners for flashing installation to be flat head SFS IR2-C or
similar at 330mm centres. Fastener length to be minimum 120mm
for pan fixing and 155mm for crown fixing.
Steelwork Tolerance
The supporting frame must be made and assembled to an
accuracy of +/- 5mm or L/600 (whichever is greater) between
bearing planes of adjacent supports, where L is the purlin spacing.
Construction Details
Installation
Panels to be laid with side lap joints away from prevailing wind
unless otherwise shown on drawings.
Flashings
External flashings to be a combination of galvanised steel with
membrane flashing overlay and membrane lined steel flashings,
as per Kingspan standard construction details. Membrane lined
steel flashings to be sealed at laps with a minimum 125mm welded
membrane strip.
All fasteners, seals and fillers to be of correct specification and
installed as indicated on the project construction drawings.
Site cut panels must provide accurate, true lines with no distortion.
Internal flashings should be made to the same specification as the
liner sheet. Flashings to be air sealed at laps and along the full
length by an unbroken bead of 6x4mm butyl rubber sealant tape
(Kingspan reference SEXT).
Panels to be cut with a suitable metal cutting circular type saw and
all exposed site steel to be treated with a suitable edge protection
lacquer. Cut openings for outlets, vents, flues etc. to be the
minimum size necessary. Penetrations larger than 300mm x 300m
should have additional structural support.
Rooflights
Rooflights can be integrated into the membrane finish (refer to
Kinspan details).
Remove all swarf and any foreign matter immediately from the
external surface of panels.
Safety
The contractor is to determine and use a safe method of working
throughout the installation and construction period, which complies
with OHS/WHS requirements. A safe work method template
(although NOT project specific) is available from Kingspan.
Drainage and Accessories
A number of drainage and accessory options are available
specifically designed to suit the Kingspan K-Dek roof system.
These include pipe/vent flashings, drainage outlets incorporating
leaf guards, overflow outlets, walkway systems and height
safety solutions.
Protection of Finished Roof
Ensure that:
Panel Lengths
Standard lengths are from 2m to 13.7m, longer lengths can be
supplied on request. Maximum length for panels transported by rail
is 12m. For orders supplied outside of Australia maximum lengths
are 11.8m.
■
■
Exact lengths to be determined by the cladding contractor from the
steelwork drawings.
Finished roof areas are protected from damage by subsequent
building operations.
Paint, solvent, bitumen, oils, fat, grease or other substance
harmful to the membrane do not come into contact with the
roof surface.
Do not:
■
Purlin Centres
