LED:A step-by-step formula for mastering Energy Efficient Lighting

LED: A step-by-step formula
for mastering Energy Efficient Lighting
Creating the optimal solution for any LED application requires
balance and synergy between several critical disciplines
(including power sources or drivers, LED emitters, thermal
management, secondary optics, housings, or enclosures) that
ultimately make up our innovation in LED outdoor site and street
lighting products. The developments of new high powered
LED products and technologies have become a driving force
in the architectural lighting industry. Today, outdoor lighting
applications in pedestrian scale (mounting to heights of 12’ –
16’) have now become practical.

A Brief History On LED Technology:
LED (light emitting diode) technology has been widely used
in many consumer products for nearly four decades. The
most common use for LED has been in indicator lights.
The high brightness and point-source characteristics of
LEDs have allowed them to be widely accepted in the
traffic signal and automotive industry (tail lights).
Although the brightness of LEDs have made them a
good alternative to HID, CFL and incandescent lamps in
signalling devices, they have previously lacked the lumen
output and optical control required for general illumination.
Early efforts to utilize LEDs for general illumination raised
the awareness of this technology, but the narrow beam
distribution and unfounded claims of 100,000+ hour life
delayed the understanding and full acceptance of LEDs
being used for outdoor area lighting.
Recent Developments:
Until recently, the light output of LED sources made the
technology an inefficient choice for outdoor area lighting.
However, the recent increases in LED efficiency coupled with
Beacon Products’ patent pending LED reflector system have
made LEDs an obvious choice for lighting public spaces™.
The Time Is Now:
Like other technologies, LEDs will continue to evolve and
increase in efficiency, decrease in cost and become more
widely accepted for use in outdoor area lighting. Recent
improvements in the range of color temperatures available,
lumens per watt and optical control are solid benefits that
can make a real difference today.

BEACON’S PHILOSOPHY
An Indirect Approach:
In raw form, LED lenses control the distribution of light. But
because most LED lenses have been designed to distribute light
in narrow beams, most manufactures attempting to use LED
sources for area lighting physically rotate large linear arrays
of LEDs to achieve light at higher angles. By rotating the LEDs,
the unshielded brightness results in high levels of glare. Glare
has been known to limit the viewer’s ability to see the lighted
road or pathway, which can lead to an unsafe condition.
Instead of using large, angled linear LED arrays to produce the
light required for area lighting, Beacon has developed a stateof-the-art indirect reflector system to harness the concentrated
light from the LEDs and apply the lumens exactly where they
are needed. The approach allows for superior optical control,
4:1 pole spacing and little to no glare.
It’s What Inside That Counts:
The development of an LED light engine requires the utmost
attention to detail. Many brands of LEDs exist, and many of
them make claims of top-tier performance and thermal stability.
However, LED performance can only be established when an
LED has been integrated, tested and deployed using sound
thermal management and electrical control.

In an effort to manage glare, our secondary reflector materials
have been carefully selected to control and diffuse the
concentrated light levels emitted from our LED sources.
Designed For LED:
Each luminaire available with an LED source has been
carefully designed to maximize the luminaire efficiency and to
achieve optical supremacy. Although each luminaire differs
aesthetically, the necessary balance between LED thermal
dynamics, source positioning and optical geometry has been
maintained in each design.
Beacon’s LED Design Center:
Starting with Beacon’s LED Design Center assures the
ability to fully integrate thermal management systems
with peripheral components, including optics, power
sources, connections, and control systems. The optical
design of Beacon’s High Power LED fixture defines the
many options of specified beam pattern and preferred
emitters. One of the most important elements to the
design of High Power LED lighting fixtures is the thermal
management. The design process is to develop a system
that dissipates the heat off the die that is creating all the
light. Too much heat on the die greatly affects the overall
performance and life of the fixture. The slightest oversight
in the thermal design will have an extremely noticeable
effect on the light color and intensity and will greatly
decrease the life of the LED.

General Description
‘Village Style’ profile design minimizes wind load
requirements. Fixture sides are optional, and are constructed
of rugged cast aluminum ribs. The LED light engine is mounted
on a heavy gauge, cast aluminum heat sink that is enclosed
in a sealed optical chamber. Light is projected into a high
efficiency, patent pending reflector system that provides the
optimum distribution of light on the ground area that it is
intended to light. Optical options are available to reduce
‘light trespass’ on adjacent property.
Modular design accommodates varied lighting output from
high brightness, white, 6000K, minimum 82 CRI, long life
LED sources are standard. 4500K LED sources are optionally
available. The LED light engine and optical system are sealed
in a chamber designed to meet IP66 requirements. This
will give a dirt free, bug-free environment between normal
servicing operations. LED drivers have power factor >92%
and THD <20% of full load.
The LED driver is sealed in a weather-tight housing and
accommodates supply voltages 100-277V 50/60 Hz.
LED driver shall be UL1310 / UL 48 Class 2 compliant.
LED driver shall have a rated life of 100,000 hours.
