GT COUNTY TEAM TAKES FIRST PLACE AT
SENIOR ODYSSEY OF THE MIND
On April 18, a team of Grand Traverse
Commission on Aging Senior Center Network
members traveled to Allendale High School to
compete in their first Senior Odyssey. Team
members Sally Burden, Bob Nice, Joan Dasef,
Barbara White and Karen Rath have spent
the last three months preparing by attending
weekly practice and coaching sessions led by
Tina Allen. All the training allowed them to take
the top spot, winning gold medals, over four
other teams from lower Michigan including the
returning champions.
Presented by Senior Neighbors, Inc. this is
the 4th year of the program which is based on
Odyssey of the Mind. The program promotes
cognitive health and vitality in adults through
creative problem solving activities. Allowing
adults to use lifelong experiences, knowledge,
and skills in new and innovative ways,
Participants work together to solve ‘problems’ by
creating scenarios that address them, as well
as, ‘spontaneous problems’ requiring creative
responses within a limited time. Teams present
their “long-term problem” by presenting the
solution in a skit. Both spontaneous and long
term problems are judged and scores are tallied
for a winner.
“Good story idea! Love the idea that
technology is just too much,” said the judges
about the GT County’s team skit based on a
family where the grandparents get the members
to personally connect again after ditching their
tech toys.
The next Senior Odyssey team will
form in August. Contact the Senior Center
Network at [email protected] or
231-922-4911 if interested.

The 64-dollar Question for Seniors:
7
Is Social Networking Good for You?
By: Stefanie Jeanne taken from www.seniorlivingmag.com
A couple of years ago, the first batch of baby
boomers turned 65. They are not a demographic
to be trifled with – they have money, education &
therefore, much spending power. What we know
is that the boomers control about 70% total net
worth of all American households, which can be
roughly translated into something like $7 trillion.
Considering half of adults 65 & older are online
or are regular users of the internet, seniors are
particularly a huge force online. 1 in 3 of such
seniors are identified as avid users of social
networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
In First World countries such as the USA,
we’re speaking of tens of millions of people
belonging in this group and the number of
seniors that regularly use social networking sites
continues to grow by leaps & bounds – from
April 09 to late 2011, the percentage using such
sites grew from 33% to 150%.
But why? The answer may be complicated for
some, but it is still more or less plain & simple:
they need to connect with other people & social
networking sites are giving them a chance to
stay “in society” & a new sense of purpose.
According to a recent article in the
Science Times, 1/3rd of seniors 75 and older live
alone or independently. But not because we
have grown older that we no longer seek out
social interaction, especially with the like-minded
peers. In fact, the results of studies suggest that
social & mental stimulation can be good for their
overall-well-being. This opportunity to interact –
on a global scale, where national boundaries are
more or less non-existent – is encouraging
older adults to flock to social networking sites
like Facebook or Twitter & “hit it with the gang.”
One of the hard “facts of life” that a senior
has to face as he grows older is the reality of his
diminishing circle of friends & acquaintances –
friends get sick & die, our spouse passes on, our
children leave to start their own families & lead
their own lives. Before the internet, most seniors
basically had no other means of forging a new
social network other than, say, going to the
public park and striking up friendships. But with
social networking, they suddenly find themselves
in a new playground where their physical
limitations don’t matter – just as long as you
have an internet connection, can type & use a
pointing device, you’re in. The task of getting
online has even become much easier with
touch-screen tablet devices – even those who
are averse to gadgets can quickly find their way
around.
Online forums of Facebook groups can
feel like their real-world counterparts in terms of
how people share information or exchange
friendly banter with one another. The online
version, however, are much easier to organize or
assemble – a webcam “meeting” can be setup in
a few minutes, & there are no restrictions on
what kind of topic you might want to discuss. In
essence, the experience is like the daily chit-chat
at the local café, except more people from all
over the world can participate. The opportunity to
meet other people from different cultures can
also bring in a fresh new perspective on the
often jaded outlook of most older adults – the
delight in discovering that there appears to be
things they have yet to discover may stimulate
their enthusiasm in the sheer business of living.
Virtual reality – especially the kind that
elevates social interaction to hitherto unrealized
levels – is said to be the future of aging in our
society. More & more adults are enthusiastically
discovering how to send an email, interact with
others through chat or by blogging. You may be
living alone, regularly assisted by a visiting
caregiver & armed with your own medical alarm
device, but you’re not really isolated. As long as
the hours spent online are balanced with
real-world physical efforts such as engaging in
stretching exercises & eating the right food
you’re in good company.

Plan for the Future
No one plans to be sick or disabled. Yet, it’s just
this kind of planning that can make all the difference in an
emergency. Long before she fell, Louise had put all her
important papers in one place & told her son where to find
them. She gave him the name of her lawyer as well as a
list of people he could contact at her bank, doctor’s office
& insurance company. She made sure he had copies of
her health insurance cards. She added her son’s name to
her safe deposit box & checking account, allowing him to
write checks. Louise made sure Medicare & her doctor
had written permission to talk with her son about her
health and insurance claims.
On the other hand, Ben always took care of family
money matters, & he never talked about the details with
Shirley. No one but Ben knew that his life insurance policy
was in a box in the closet or that the car title & deed to the
house were filed in his desk drawer. Ben never expected
his wife would have to take over. His lack of planning
made a tough job even tougher for Shirley.
Ben has been married
for 47 years. He always
managed the family’s
money. But since his
stroke, Ben can’t walk or
talk. His wife, Shirley,
feels overwhelmed.
Of course, she’s worried
about his health. But on
top of that, she has no
idea what bills should be
paid or when they’re due.
Legal Documents
99
There are many types of legal documents that can help you plan how
your affairs will be handled in the future. Many of them have names that sound
alike, so make sure you are getting the documents you want. State laws vary,
so find the rules, requirements & forms used in your state.
Wills & trusts let you name the person you want your money & property to
go to after you die. Advanced Directives let you make arrangements for your
care if you become sick. There are two ways to do this:
ϭ͘ A living will gives you a say in your healthcare if you’re too sick to make your
wishes known. You may state what kind of care you do/don’t want. This can
make it easier for family members to make tough health care decisions for you.
2. A durable power of attorney for healthcare lets you name the person you
want to make medical decisions if you can’t make them yourself. Make sure the
person you name is willing to make those decisions for you.
For legal matters, there are two ways to give someone you trust the
power to act in your place:
1. A general power of attorney lets you give someone else the authority to act
on your behalf, but this power will end if you are unable to make decisions.
2. A “durable” power of attorney allows you to name someone to act on your
behalf for any legal task, but it stays in place if you become unable to make
your own decisions.
What Exactly is an “Important Paper?”
The answer to this question may be different for every family. The following
lists can help you decide what is important to you. Remember, this is a starting
place. You may have other information to add. For example, if you have a pet,
you will want to include the name & address of your vet.
Please remember to include complete information about the following:
Personal records - Full legal name - Social security number - Legal residence Date & place of birth - Names and addresses of spouse and children - Location
of birth and death certificates and certificates of marriage, divorce, citizenship
& adoption - Employers and dates of employment - Education and military
records - Names and phone numbers of religious contacts - Memberships in
groups & awards received - Names & phone numbers of close friends, relatives
& lawyer or financial advisor - Names & phone numbers of doctors Medications taken regularly - Location of living will & other legal documents.

June feels great. She enjoys gardening, playing cards
with friends at the senior center & taking a water
aerobics class. She turns 78 this year, but she feels
like she’s still in her thirties.
Does June’s active lifestyle have anything to do with her good
health? Researchers would likely say “yes.” There are many
things you can do to help yourself age well. Physical activity,
exercise and making healthy food choices are the cornerstones
for most suggestions about healthy aging. But emerging
research also indicates the possibility that engaging in social
and productive activities you enjoy, like taking an art class or
volunteering in your community or with your place of worship,
may also help maintain your well-being. A number of early
studies found that people who are involved in hobbies and
other social pursuits may be at lower risk for some health
problems, including dementia. They might even live longer. In
one study, older adults who reported participating in social
activities or meaningful, productive activities lived longer.
Researchers are exploring if participation in these kinds of
activities can be the direct cause of positive health outcomes.
List of social
and productive
activities you
might like:
•
•
•
•
•
•
People who are sociable, generous and goal-oriented may be
happier and less depressed than other people. Researchers
learned that the older volunteers increased their cognitive,
social and physical activity levels. Although more research is
needed, researchers think that over the long term participants
may have decreased their risk for disability, dependency and
dementia in later life.
•
Many causes need help from volunteers. For example, groups
that help homeless people need volunteers to serve meals or
organize clothing donations. Animal shelters need help caring
for dogs and cats. Senior groups need aides to help people with
disabilities run their errands. The list goes on.
•
Everyone has different limits to the amount of time he or she
can spend on social or other activities. What is perfect for one
person might be too much for another.

Dear Friends of the Commission on Aging,
As you may have heard, or read, I was planning on retiring May 15,
2015. WellY I’m still here! With all the changes happening at the County, I
was asked to postpone my retirement. The COA has been very good to me
over the last 27 years and I felt it was important to stay. It was good for me,
personally, too. I’ll still be retiring, I’m just postponing the date. I’ll let you
know when that is, as soon as a new date is selected.
Thank you for all the kind wishes and cards! They were greatly
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Interlochen Satellite
