Background:
Elizabeth Robertson (ER) had been invited to the meeting to discuss matters
relating to school lunches, which had been raised at previous PP meetings.
Specifically:
Portion sizes
Sugary drinks eg flavoured milk
School snacks
ER presented to the meeting, making the following points:
Nutmeg programme is used to analyse all food and drinks on offer.

The Nutmeg programme is designed to ensure children receive the full
range of nutrition over the course of the week in line with the School
Food Nutrition Act.
Advice from school nutritionist is that flavoured milk is an acceptable part
of a balanced diet. Noted the benefit of calcium intake whether plain or

flavoured milk.
Some schools favour flavoured milk being offered as the alternative is
that the children drink less milk or avoid it completely (with the downside
being the reduced calcium intake).
School meals staff can use discretion to ensure portion sizes are
appropriate ( albeit recognise that items such as beef burgers will be one
size fits all)
Schools, in consultation with parents, can ask that certain items be
removed from the lunch menu. It is not possible to replace with an
alternative but items can be removed.
Some other schools have P7s promoting fruit by offering to younger
pupils. Other schools have used food waste reduction targets to promote
pupils clearing plates of food.
Discussion ensued with the following points being made:
Neighbouring Renfrewshire Council schools offer only milk or water
Children aren’t always clear on what they are allowed to choose – for
example, can they have fruit as well as pudding? Can they have a starter
(soup) and a pudding but no main? Are they really not allowed to have
vegetables with their chicken burger, as some pupils understand?
Mrs McCredie noted that support staff are in the dining hall and
encourage children to eat their meal. This should identify pupils who eat
pudding but no main course, for example.
Mrs McCredie noted that a food policy is being developed by the school. This is
being designed to ensure there is a balance between fruit and treats being offered
as well as addressing allergies. A plea was also made for healthy snacks to be
brought to school. In particular, a ‘we’re a nut free school’ poster had been
developed in conjunction with children with allergies and this would be in
bookbags this week. Caution was given by some parents that not everyone will
react well to being preached to. Also that too much fruit out with meal times can
also lead to tooth decay.

Update:
John Ferrie advised that programme is ‘on programme for completion as targeted
in October 2016’.
First fix mechanical and electrical is underway. Insulation, drainage to toilet blocks
and first floor slabs are all in progress. A roof has been added to the quadrangle.
John presented various photos to the meeting to demonstrate the progress being
made. As stated previously, these points will be used for comparison / sense of
progress in future updates.
Fencing:
Newly revised plans for fencing were presented to the meeting.
Nursery - increased height of fence and gate to nursery
Front fencing – new fence and gates to match existing plan with a controlled gate
to access the vehicular access route across the front of the building
Car park – access to car park will remain unchanged.
Fencing between school building and edge of bike shed (P1 collection area) will be
moved forward to in line with the bike shed and will be 1.8 metres high weldmesh.
John Ferrie noted that whilst it is still the intention to complete the fencing prior
to re-entry in October he had to alert the meeting to the potential for this to be
delayed due to it being out with the main contract.
More detailed questions such as access to cark park from the nursery and the
closing mechanism for gates (esp at nursery access) are still being considered and
John was unable to expand on these points at this time.

MUGA/3G pitch:
John Ferrie noted that plans approved by the Planning department show a MUGA
within KPS grounds, to replace the existing red blaes pitch. It was noted that the
red blaes is a long and narrow area and the pitch would cover around two thirds of
its length and around all of the width. (48mx30m).
The surface finish is proposed to be type 4 polymeric.
Cllr Wilson noted that the Council is looking at a 3G/4G pitch for Birkmyre rugby
pitch and the quote at £1.2m is three times the budget.
Discussion ensued regards the suitability of MUGA versus 3G including the pitch
not being large enough for football matches, the suitability of the surface for year
round usage and that there would be no restrictions of footwear when using.
John Ferrie noted that the Council proposed proceeding with a MUGA facility to
avoid delaying the completion.
School update
Head Teacher’s report was presented as attached.
HT Report 17th
February 2016.docx
Further to last month’s meeting, Mrs McCredie reported that staff were very
motivated to turn any negative messages on social media into a positive through
using the ‘a day in the life of’ concept.
Art work for refurbished building – Mrs McCredie is meeting with Lindsay
McNaughton from Hub West to progress.
Mrs McCredie outlined the planned art exhibition to take place in school in the
summer term. This will be open to the community and professionally framed art
work from the children will be available to purchase. In respect of this, Mrs
McCredie sought parental views on the price we would be willing to pay for a

piece of professionally framed children’s art work. £10 was the consensus. £6.25 is
cost price.
Cargill Avenue bus stop – noted that the Council had written to the owners of the
overgrown hedge adjacent to the bus stop for buses 2 and 3. They have 28 days to
take action. Noted that the community policy have also been informed about
trades vehicles being parked on the bus stops.
