Volleyball Men’s Bucs: Edinburgh vs Aberdeen What are your team’s goals for this year’s Bucs Campaign? For BUCS, ideally we would finish in the top 4. For the Scottish University’s cup we are aiming to win. At the moment we are top of the league and undefeated this season. Do you think you have what it takes at the moment to achieve this? Yeah we have a really a good team. We are strong in that we are really close and we have 2 performance athletes in our team and because of our record this season so far, I have full confidence we can go all the way. If we win today then we will go through to the final of the league next week. What do you think of your chances against today’s opposition? I think they will be good. We beat them last time we played 3‐1 and we weren’t playing particularly well that day so should beat them again. Have you got any specific strategies planned on how you are going to defeat the opposition? No‐ we would just hope to play our own game and keep it controlled at our side. We will also try to keep the ball away from their 1 really good player. Where did you place last year in the BUCS competition? In the Scottish University Championships we won as we have for the last 2 years, and in BUCS we came third, so would be looking to equal or better that ranking. Have you implemented any changes since last year to better your chances for this year? Since last year we have become a Performance team which is probably the biggest thing. From that we have got an extra weights training session which has done a lot so far to improve our strength and stamina. It has also brought the team together a lot more making us a lot tighter. Who would you say is your biggest competition and why? Within Scotland it would be Strathclyde; they were tough to beat when we last played them. In Britain it would definitely be Leeds; they have won BUCS for the last 3 years. Durham is also really good. Do you have any new additions to the team this year? We have new players who have fitted in really well. Trials are held every year and even old members are re‐trialled so everyone has to work really hard to get in or keep their place. How many teams are there in total? We have 2 men’s teams, 2 women’s teams and 1 district team, with 10 people in each team. How often do you train? We have 3 hours of court time over 2 sessions, then a weights session in the gym. Edinburgh won this round with scores of 25‐20, 25‐21, 25‐18 and will therefore go through to the finals next week.
