….Kayaking in Solund….
Paddling from Råketneset - Hågøy around with admitted hikingtour
• Padlingtour around. 11 km.
• Approximately 4 hours of paddling.
• Short hiking tour to the top of Hågøy approx. 1, 5 hour.
• Important to take into account the wind direction. Plan your trip
so that the last stage is with the wind and not the opposite.
• How to get to Råket Neset.
You drive about 20 km from Krakhella and take to the right towards Strand / Avløyp, 1 km
before you are at Hardbakke.
You follow the road towards the Strand 4.4 km. There are signs to Råkeneset on the left
hand side. There is parking for several cars along the road and only a short distance to carry
the kayaks down to a small beach.
The actual trip
The starting point for the kayaktour is inside a nearly closed bay is well protected from wind.
The tour goes out in the Råkesundet and north of the strait. After about 1 km you have
passed Langøya west of you and you get Hågøyna in front on the west side.
Approximately 800 m after passing Langøya get North Leirvika on your left. There is a beach
with good landing conditions for kayaking there. Northern Leirvika is also a perfect base for a
trip on the top of the island, 180 meters high.
From there, you have a panoramic view of the sea and islands from Utvær in the southwest
to Færøy and Buskøy in the north. Towards the east is the steep and equally impressive rock
wall that runs northward along the whole strait.
You will probably also meet wild sheep that graze on the island. The sheep are the breed of
wild sheep or old Norwegian coatsheep and not really wanted. They are of the same sheep
as the Vikings in his time spun and wove wool, to, among other things, clothing and sails on
their boats.
Down in the kayaks, we continue north across the strait. You hold along the Hågøyna and
pass three small islets. Further up, you come into Håsundet and now has courses more to
the northwest. You've then got Hågøykalven on your right side.
Well out of the sound brings up a landing area for larger boats. This is used during cuting
and by transporting sheep to and from Hågøyna.
As you reach the northern tip of Hågøyna and set course for the south again, you are in
Lågøysundet. This sound has some north and southbound traffic, although the larger boats
go further west in the Outer Steinsund and west of Lågøy.
Here eagles nest in the area. It would be strange if you should not get a glimpse of her on
the way out to sea or in again with food.
We recommend that you hold up under the west wall to the south Hågøyna sound. If you're
out in July, you will see the beautiful purple heather flower patches on the mountain.
In the south end of the Hågøyna, set you over the sound to the east to the northern tip of
Hogneskjela and laps it. You get so Langøyna in the bow, passing south of it and continue
over Råkesundet north of Henrikholmen.
Have a nice tour!
