10 STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL FOOD DRIVE:
STEP 1
Register your food drive with Midwest Food Bank
By registering your group’s food drive, we can ensure that we provide all the
necessary support needed. A registration form can be found at the end of this
packet. Please submit it electronically to [email protected].
Or by mail or fax:

Fax: 309-291-0901
Take a tour of Midwest Food Bank – to schedule call 309-291-0900
We ask that your group take a tour of Midwest Food Bank before starting your food
drive if you haven’t already. During the course of your food drive you act as a MFB
ambassador and collaborative partner and we want to make sure you’re armed with
all the information needed to speak about and/or answer any questions about where
the food will be going. Please call us at 309-291-0900 to schedule a visit.
STEP 3
Set a DATE
Pick a date or date range for your food drive that gives you plenty of time to prepare
and get the word out. Food drives can be successful on one specific day or over a
period of time, such as a week or weekend.
STEP 4
Location! Location! Location!
Location is key for a successful food drive. Planning for a single site vs. multiple site
food drive will require different planning. High-traffic areas allow for more visibility.
Consider weather and safety or security when selecting a location. Wherever you
decide to have your food drive, make sure you have permission to do so.
STEP 5
Set a GOAL
Setting a goal is a great motivational tool for participants and can create a feeling of
accomplishment at the end of the drive. Pick a goal that is challenging but

achievable. Be sure to post information about your goal in a prominent location and
update it as often as possible. You can set up individual group goals by location,
days, or times so everyone is challenged to contribute in some way.
STEP 6
Decide how to collect food
You can choose your own boxes or, depending upon availability, MFB may be able
to provide you with large or small boxes for your food drive. You can request boxes
on the registration form found at the end of this packet. Clearly mark your food
collection containers and place them in a convenient and highly visible place to
encourage participation.
STEP 7
Consider collecting monetary donations also
Financial donations can be made in the form of cash, credit or check. MFB will
provide your group with donation envelopes that can be used for your food drive and
consider a secure place to put any monetary donations collected. All donations
made to Midwest Food Bank, NFP are tax-deductible.
STEP 8
PROMOTE! PROMOTE! PROMOTE!
A key to success will be making sure lots of people know about your food drive so
they can donate. You can use the Customizable MFB Food Drive Flyer to help
spread the word along with word of mouth, newspaper/magazine ads, and/or
radio/television advertising.
STEP 9
Pray
Midwest Food Bank holds prayer in high regard. If you don’t pray, that’s okay! We
will be praying for your group and your food drive before, during and after. MFB is
blessed that your group has decided to support us through a food drive and we plan
on sharing that blessing with all we serve. We care very much that your experience
with your food drive is rewarding and spiritually fulfilling.
STEP 10
Completing your food drive
We look forward to hearing about your food drive experiences. Please call us as
soon as your food drive is over to verify pick-up or delivery of donated food. If
you’ve taken photos, please consider sharing those with us before, during, and after
your food drive (digital pictures can be sent to [email protected]).
