Save the Date! www.hoffmanhomes.com Letter from the Chief Executive Officer Dear Friends, The year 2011 presented many financial challenges for Hoffman Homes. Like many non-profits, we have seen a significant reduction in funding from government agencies. Fortunately, we have been able to survive through the generosity of our supporting churches, corporations, foundations, business partners, and individuals. Your have supported us in several ways: • Golf tournament sponsorship and participation • Annual Gala attendance and auction • Annual Appeal direct mailing • Holiday gift program • Boxtops and Labels for Education • Water tower project special appeal • ABATE motorcycle ride • Harvest home • Tributes and memorials • Gifts in kind • Local restaurant fundraisers • Bequests/planned gifts • General unrestricted giving A Place for Growth and Change The 2011-2012 Annual Appeal arrived in mailboxes the second week in November and we have already raised $24,891 of our $40,000 goal! At Hoffman Homes we need to provide a safe environment where children can grow and change. One way we do this is through our Creative therapies. Creative therapies include techniques that can be used for self-expression and personal growth when the children are unable to participate in traditional talk therapy. They give children a sense of accomplishment and help them improve by focusing on their strengths and on the future. Our children can attest to this: “Taking care of the animals helps me take care of myself.” “I learned that I can make a difference and that I am not worthless.” “It took away things I was worrying about and got my mind on something else.” In order to continue to be a place of growth and change, we are asking for your help with providing the resources to maintain our programs. Please help us reach our goal of $40,000. We appreciate your donation and your help with making a difference in the lives of children and families served by Hoffman Homes for Youth! Your support has allowed us to provide vital care and treatment for children and families who have been traumatized by events or situations including physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, suicide attempts, drug & alcohol abuse, and severe mental illness. Words cannot express my gratitude. With your continued support, we will be able to serve the needs of our communities. Drucker said, “Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes; but no plans.” In August, Hoffman Homes discovered the water lines leading from our main water supply tower needed immediate replacement. This was an unexpected $20,000 expense that was not factored into our budget. We reached out to our supporters through the church and said if 100 churches would commit to sending an extra $200 this year to Hoffman Homes for Youth, we can raise the $20,000 that is needed and fix the problem. Currently 48 churches and individuals have committed to helping Hoffman Homes raise $10,817! Christmas Dinner at The Altland House For the third year in a row, the Altland House, located in Abbottstown, PA, generously provided Christmas dinner to the children at Hoffman Homes who could not go home for the holiday. The New Oxford Coffee Company, located on the square in New Oxford, PA, also donated cookies to take back to campus. The children and staff had a wonderful time and were very appreciative. Thank you to the Altland House, the New Oxford Coffee Company and everyone who helped make Christmas special for the children. A.B.A.T.E. Spreads Holiday Cheer On Saturday, November 19th, A.B.A.T.E., Alliance of Bikers Aimed Towards Education, made their annual visit to Hoffman Homes. With “Red Man” Santa leading the way, around 100 motorcycles could be heard coming down the street well before reaching campus. They circled the oval as they honked their horns for all the children to hear. The children were delighted as they waved and admired the Harley-Davidson bikes. Santa presented a check for $5,000 to Alicia Stanley, Vice President of Development, to be used towards our Holiday Gift Program and any other needs the children may have throughout their stay at Hoffman Homes. A.B.A.T.E. also had t-shirts custom made for each child in care, and a reception was held in the dining hall for everyone. The children also made Christmas cards to hand to Santa in appreciation for their donation. Thank you A.B.A.T.E. for spreading holiday cheer and being so very generous to the children at Hoffman Homes! Holiday Gift Program Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2011 Holiday Gift Program. This program ensures that all children in care receive Christmas gifts during the holiday season. Each year individuals, churches, schools, clubs, businesses, and organizations contact the development office and request gifts tags to fulfill for the children. Additionally, many make a monetary donation restricted specifically to the program and others donate their time to wrap gifts. Thank you again to everyone who helped to make this Christmas special for the children in care! 4 www.hoffmanhomes.com 7 Sanctuary Update: Safety Plans On Friday November 4th, Safety Plans were introduced to the children and staff. The children, under the direction of Brecia Nevada, VP of Admissions, presented a short skit on Safety Plans to everyone and kits (lanyards and small pouches with cards similar to I.D. badges) were distributed for implementation. So, what is a Safety Plan and why is it important? Safety Plans are a concrete way to address emotional management when under stress. They are visual reminders for both staff and children about the need for each individual to manage emotions in order to keep themselves and others safe. It also helps people feel a sense of control over feelings and behaviors that have felt beyond their ability to control. The plan should include activities that one can do alone as well as those that involve others. The activities should be appropriate to the time and place (i.e. leaving to get a cup of coffee if you are the only staff on duty would not be appropriate). There are 4 domains of safety that we refer to when we are creating a Safety Plan. Most of us only think of physical safety, but sometimes our unsafe behaviors are more likely to be in one of the other categories. Psychological safety means being safe within ourselves (no negative self-talk). Social safety refers to being safe with others (not teasing or name-calling) and Moral safety means doing the right thing (not keeping a harmful secret or colluding with someone who is doing something wrong). Why do staff need to wear them too? Because staff members are just as vulnerable to experiencing overwhelming emotions as the children in the sometimes overwhelming environment in which we work. Part of the work of creating a trauma-informed culture and work environment is to model emotional management skills for others. Trinity UCC Ice Cream Social On Wednesday, August 17th, members of Trinity United Church of Christ in Gettysburg celebrated with the children at Hoffman Homes during their annual Peaches & Ice Cream Social. Hollabaugh Brothers, Inc. Fruit Farm & Market located in Biglerville, PA, generously donated the peaches. Many hours of preparation went into this event to peel the peaches and prepare the ice cream. The children enjoyed the special treat and created a banner to show their appreciation. Thank you Trinity UCC! 8 9 There are Many Ways to Give to Hoffman Homes... Labels For Education and Box Tops For Education Fundraising Events The Golf Tournament, Autumn Gala, and the Annual Appeal (our direct mail campaign) are Hoffman Homes for Youth's fundraising efforts to provide necessary support to the operating budget. Gifts to these solicitations ensure up to date, cheerful and safe residences for our children. Each of these fundraising events defray the cost of needed renovations to the school building, residences and recreation spaces. They are vital to sustain an adequate environment for healing and learning. Hoffman Homes for Youth continues to collect Labels for Education and Box Tops for Education. This year we received a check for $1,430 from Box Tops for Education! Thank you to the Friends, volunteers, and one of Hoffman’s employees, Brittany Noble, for taking the time to sort through the many box tops that were submitted. Please continue to send in your labels and box tops with attention to Alicia Stanley. Updated preparation information is listed below. Thank you for your continued support!
