Administrator’s Message
May is shaping up to be a busy month. Concerts, competitions, liturgy, track meet, assembly, Treaty Night, field trips and the regular
academic programming will most certainly keep students engaged over the next thirty days. We give thanks to God for the arrival of
Spring and ask for His continued blessings. The month of May is also dedicated to Mary and our Rosary Club will begin next week.
All students are welcome to join.
Children who will be five years old by January 31, 2018 are eligible to start school next fall. We are a safe, friendly Catholic school
that helps each of our students reach their full potential. At Father Vachon we nurture faith, encourage excellence in learning and
inspire students to serve others, so they can make the world around them a better place. Also, if you have a neighbour, or know of
people who have children ready to begin kindergarten, tell them about our school and encourage them to come and check out our
program. We hope to spread the good news about the faith and learning that takes place at Father Vachon.
Please note the attached Theodore Press Release which outlines the latest information with respect to the recent Theodore court ruling.
Please pray that Catholic Education will remain in its current form with all families being able to choose the school system they
believe best serves their child's learning needs and reflects the values and morals they hold. God Bless.
Enjoy the warmer weather,
Mr. K. Hanson - Principal

SYNERVOICE
As most of you are aware we are using the “Synervoice System” for student absences, school information and newsletters. If you
receive an automated call, please do not delete as you may be missing important school information. Should the message be in regard
to your student(s) absence, please contact the school to let us know of your child/childrens whereabouts.
KINDERGARTEN
If you have a child who will be 5 years old before January 31, 2018 they are eligible to register for Kindergarten. Please contact the
school at (306) 659-7210.
NUT ALERT
We have a number of students at our school that are highly allergic to peanuts and nut products. Anaphylaxis is a medical condition
that causes a severe reaction to specific foods and can result in death within minutes. Because of the seriousness of this danger, we ask
that you are careful to avoid sending food to school that contain nuts. A reminder that if you have a child that needs medical treatment
that is life threatening, please contact the school office. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE/ABSENCE
Please notify the office (659-7210) if your child is away from school. Please leave their name, their grade, their teacher’s name and a
reason for the absence. Thank you.
TUESDAY MORNING MEETINGS
On two Tuesday mornings per month our staff meets for prayer and to collaborate for student learning. We ask that on those
Tuesdays, students arrive at the school a little later – 8:30 AM at the earliest. The door from the mudroom will be locked until that
time. Thank you for supporting us in better serving your children.

NEWS RELEASE

Christ the Teacher Roman Catholic School Division appeals Theodore case ruling
The Saskatchewan Catholic School Boards Association (SCSBA) announced that an appeal of the recent
decision in the Theodore court case will be filed on behalf of Christ the Teacher School Division. The decision
to appeal has been unanimously endorsed by all eight Catholic school boards in the province. Although the
case is specific to Christ the Teacher division, it affects all Catholic education in the province.
“The legal team representing Christ the Teacher School Division in this case has carefully reviewed the trial
judge’s lengthy decision, and we believe that there are several strong grounds for appeal,” said SCSBA
spokesperson Tom Fortosky.
“At its essence, the constitution provides the Catholic minority with the right to operate a school system in
accordance with Catholic values and beliefs,” said Fortosky. “We believe that this includes the right to have an
inclusive and welcoming admittance policy consistent with the church’s ecumenical efforts since the Second
Vatican Council. This benefits the broader community as more parents have had the opportunity to exercise
parental choice and choose a faith-based education for their children.”
The legal team feels that there were legal errors in finding that the Provincial Government has to discriminate
on the basis of religion in its allocation of funding. The constitutional provision in section 17(2) expressly
prohibits any such discrimination. They also believe that the trial judge erroneously interpreted several longstanding legal principles—as established by past decisions of the courts, including the Supreme Court of
Canada—related to the constitution.
Fortosky added, “We are fortunate that Saskatchewan has enjoyed a separate school system since our
inception. Parents have obviously endorsed Catholic education by entrusting Catholic schools with the
education of their children. And we’ll do everything we can to ensure that choice for faith-based education in
Saskatchewan remains for future generations.”
