Congratulations! It’s time to move out on your own and your life depends on the luck of the
draw. You will draw out your monthly rental allowance and your future roommate’s name. You will
also be drawing out a conflict scenario written by YOUR CLASSMATES that you must solve.
Living away from home is the first step in the launching phase of the family life cycle and one
where tons of emotions are at play. You’re probably feeling stressed out, hopeful, responsible, and most
importantly INDEPENDENT! But remember, living away from home can be frustrating and difficult so
pretend this project is REAL LIFE. You are very likely to experience some if not all of these stresses in
the future.

B. Rent Decisions and Rent Check - Once you have decided who will be staying in
which bedroom and labeled your floor plan, it is imperative to discuss what amount will
be paid by each for rent. Sometimes roomies chose to split it down the middle and other
times the amount that is paid reflects the size/amenities of the room. On the page for
Part B, describe the amount each roommate will pay and explain why then write a check
for your part of the rent for next month to your landlord.
o FOR EXAMPLE: If John has $400 for rent each month and Steven has $560, Steven
would logically take the larger bedroom if there is one, and would logically be
expected to pay a larger portion of the rent.
C. House Rules - Once your find your house, come up with at LEAST 10 house rules.
These rules should not include chores – there is a separate section for that. List the rules
on the attached sheet.
D. Cleaning Schedule/Chore Chart - Brainstorm some chores below then prepare a
cleaning schedule for you and your roommate on the attached sheet. Keep in mind that
chores should be distributed equitably and there should be a variety of chores included.

E. Conflict Resolution - Go to page __________ in the book and review the conflict
process. Use the conflict that you drew out of the envelope and the attached worksheet to
solve the conflict together as roommates. Breaking up and moving out is not an option.
