BioSketches Vs. Other Support

NIH BIOSKETCHES VS. NIH OTHER SUPPORT
BioSketches Research Support Section
NIH Instructions: D. Research Support. List selected ongoing or completed (during the last three years)
research projects (federal and non-federal support). Begin with the projects that are most relevant to the
research proposed in this application. Briefly indicate the overall goals of the projects and your role (e.g. PI,
Co-Investigator, Consultant) in the research project. Do not list award amounts or percent effort in projects.
Sample BioSketch Research Support Section:
Ongoing Research Support
R01 MH922731-05
Merryle (PI)
12/15/07-11/30/12
Physical disability, depression and substance abuse in the elderly
The goal of this study is to identify disability and depression trajectories and demographic factors associated
with substance abuse in an independently-living elderly population.
Role: Co-Investigator
Faculty Resources Grant, Washington University
08/15/09-08/14/11
Opiate Addiction Database
The goal of this project is to create an integrated database of demographic, social and biomedical
information for homeless opiate abusers in two urban Missouri locations, using a number of state and local
data sources.
Role: PI
Completed Research Support
K02 AG442898
Hunt (PI)
02/01/02-01/31/05
Drug Abuse in the Elderly
Independent Scientist Award: to develop a drug addiction research program with a focus on substance abuse
among the elderly.
Role: Co-Investigator
Note: If there is no Ongoing and/or Completed research for an individual, include the heading with “None”
listed below the heading.

None
Other Support Section
For New and Renewal Applications (PHS 398) – DO NOT SUBMIT UNLESS REQUESTED
For Non-competing Progress Reports (PHS 2590) – Submit only Active Support for Key Personnel

Chloride and Sodium Transport in Airway Epithelial Cells
3.60 calendar
The major goals of this project are to define the biochemistry of chloride and sodium transport in airway
epithelial cells and clone the gene(s) involved in transport.
PENDING
DCB 950000 (Anderson)
12/01/2002 – 11/30/2004
National Science Foundation

Liposome Membrane Composition and Function
2.40 calendar
The major goals of this project are to define biochemical properties of liposome membrane components
and maximize liposome uptake into cells.
OVERLAP
There is scientific overlap between aim 2 of NSF DCB 950000 and aim 4 of the application under
consideration. If both are funded, the budgets will be adjusted appropriately in conjunction with agency
staff.

OTHER SUPPORT REMINDERS:
• Active effort should never be >100%, not even if there is overlap approval.
• For faculty, effort should never be > 95% (with approved Exception from Research Administration).
• “Pending" includes all submitted proposals that have not been rejected.
• Neither the application under consideration nor the current PHS award for this project should be listed as
Other Support.
• If the support is provided under a consortium/subcontract arrangement or is part of a multiproject award,
indicate the project number, PD/PI, and source for the overall project, and provide all other information for
the subproject only.
• For Mentored Career Development Awards (K’s) only submit OS for the Mentor and Co-Mentor(s), NOT for
the candidate, at the time of submission. Each OS is limited to 4 pages, like the biosketch.
• Other Support includes all financial resources, whether Federal, non-Federal, commercial or institutional,
available in direct support of an individual’s research endeavors, including but not limited to research grants,
cooperative agreements, contracts, and/or institutional awards. Training awards, prizes, or gifts are not
included.

Highlighted items indicate a difference between the two NIH forms.
* For Mentored Career Development Awards (K’s) only, do NOT include overlap and level of effort
** For Progress Reports/eSNAPs, Pending Other Support is not required. The NIH only requires Active Other
Support
Of note: Generally Other Support is only required Just-In-Time (JIT), unless the RFA/PA requests Other
support at the time of proposal submission
For Whom Do You Need to Submit a BioSketch and Other Support Information?
BioSketches at the Time of Proposal Submission:
• All Key Personnel including Subaward Key Personnel
• All Other Significant Contributors (OSC) including Subaward OSCs
• Consultants – IF the PI defines the Consultant as Key Personnel, including Subaward Consultants
• Anyone else the RFA/PA lists as required, e.g. External/Internal Advisory Board members, if applicable
Other Support for Just-In-Time Submission:
• Key Personnel only
Progress Reports/eSNAPs
• BioSketch – Only required for new Key Personnel
• Other Support – If there are changes to the Other Support for Key Personnel from that previously
submitted, AND for new Key Personnel
