The Nottingham Casuals club has made great strides in engaging with the local population of students, where Nottingham has over 40,000. In previous years the club has succeeded in attracting a few students to the club through the use of word of mouth. However, this year has seen the club utilise a number of other ways to communicate the opportunities the club has to offer, and in particular the University of Nottingham which is less then 2 miles away from the club site. Firstly the club’s volunteers ensured they provided promotional items such as flyers and posters for the Fresher's Fair and these were also posted up in the many halls on campus. The next stage of this recruitment campaign was to showcase the club at the University's Club Evening where NCRFC volunteers were able to speak to players. Then came the most notable intervention. We utilised Facebook to create an advert. This is normally taken advantage of by businesses to target certain audiences, but provided the rugby club with the opportunity to target a rugby population within the University. So with a few criteria in place to ensure the advert targeted Facebook pages of rugby players in the University of Nottingham, the club was able to advertise to 4000 students, which enticed 192 students to click on the advert to take them to the NCRFC FB Page where there were further details of 'Come & TRY Us Evenings being held. Along with the above advert, the club provided a mini-bus to go around the campus halls of residences to collect and return players. Food was provided for partipating players also. In addition to this the club has further developed its relationship with the Nottingham Medics team who now train along side the club, although they play in the Local Leagues. Despite this, the relation has been enhanced where players involved with the Medics who are not selected to play on a Saturday afternoon for the Medics XV are provided the opportunity to play in the Casuals teams, so no one misses out! Casuals also hosts each year the British University Medics 7's tournament attended by up to 20 Medics rugby sides from across the country. The following day the club's volunteers turn out once more to host the University of Nottingham Halls of Residence 7's tournament. This is attended by up to 15 sides from the University's intramural sports association. In addition to rugby, NCRFC entertains students playing Korfball at their annual tournament in the summer and has hosted the University of Nottingham Ultimate Frisbee Club for training and matches.
