S
A Whole New World…of creatures
This activity has students creating and collaborating on a new creature based on their
own knowledge and dichotomous key
1. Watch the Edpuzzle video on dichotomous keys.
2. Locate examples of dichotomous keys for animals, plants, fungi, protista,
bacteria, and archaea online or on the iPad app: ClassifyIt
3. Identify characteristics of each and record in Blackboard discussion
board.
SUBSTITUTION
Technology acts a direct substitute,
with no functional improvement
This task uses:
Learning Objective(s):
•
Understand the function
and process of
dichotomous keys
•
Comprehend the
groupings based on
Kingdom in a
dichotomous key
•
Identify characteristics of
the six groups of living
organisms
A
A Whole New World…
Draw a creature that combines characteristics found in multiple dichotomous keys
1. Collect a Mobi/Slate from the station
2. Using the Mobi/Slate, draw your own creature using a combination of
kingdom characteristics from the dichotomous keys.
3. Save your drawing as a jpg.
AUGMENTATION
Technology acts as a direct tool for
substitution with some functional
improvement.
This task uses:
Learning Objective(s):
•
Create new species
based on combinations
of existing specimens.
M
Whole New World…of Creatures
Identify background information, Latin name creation, classification and physical
description of new created creature.
1. Locate template on Google docs through Dr. Simpson’s Blackboard for
Creative Creature Classifications.
2. Post all required information for your creature.
3. Have partner review creature and classifications and offer creative
suggestions.
4. Make adjustments as needed.
MODIFICATION
Technology allows for the
creation of new tasks that were
previously not conceivable
This task uses:
Learning Objective(s):
•
Create creature
information and scientist
description.
•
Analyze peer creation
and make suggestions.
•
Edit work based on
suggestions
R
A Whole New World…of creatures
Post Creature picture and Creative Creature Classification to Classflow presentation to
share with collaborating class and Skype to discuss modifications.
1. Work with partner to post each student creature and Creative Creature
Classification to our shared Classflow presentation.
2. Log onto Skype with Dr. Simpson’s assistance.
3. When all posts are complete, share code with collaborating class via
Skype.
4. Pair with a collaborating student to analyze creature and classification
using dichotomous key.
5. Offer feedback between pairs.
6. Predict the effect these creatures would have on the environment and
name possible predators.
7. Collaboratively create a food web including this new creature.
REDEFINITION
Technology allows for the
creation of new tasks that were
previously not conceivable
This task uses:
Learning Objective(s):
•
Utilize a dichotomous
key
•
Create food web and
possible predators
•
Predict effects of new
species on environment
