Open Studio Night
n Wednesday the 12th of April, more
than halfway through the Arts and Culture block, the first and second year
students presented their final works-in-progress
at an Open Studio Night in Intro in Situ. They
presented works in their developing stage and
opened the floor for feedback from an audience
with a fresh perspective on what they had been
creating. It gave everyone a moment to evaluate
their works and helped them to make the final
decisions and finishing touches for their final
artworks that will be presented at Museum Dr.
Guislain on the 6th of May in Ghent, Belgium.

exhibition will run until the 5th of May. In this

has worked their own way, following their own artistic research methods. The exhibition aims to bring all the
individual research and conceptual processes together, hence symbolizing all the different facets that ultimately
form culture. It will be open to all audiences until Saturday 13th of May, with students hosting a finissage Thursday, May 11th. If you are interested, you are always welcome to pass by.

Why did you choose iArts?
I felt like iArts could provide me with the necessary
space to understand what medium I am most inclined
towards, creating a safe space for figuring out what I
truly want.
Why did you choose to join iArts?
At the time, I was really looking for a study programme that mixes theoretical courses and practical
skills, a different kind of educational system where a
certain involvement with society would take place.
What are your interests?
I really enjoy working with anything that is 3D; I guess
you could say anything that is powerful, dynamic, in
motion, much like video works, but that at the same
time has a 3-dimensional structure, like sculptures and
installations. I am interested in metal workings and
sculptures, and appreciate the aesthetics of the ‘old’,
for example vintage objects and analog photography.
What are your interests?
That is a very hard question to answer, my first
thought was cooking! I really enjoy cooking, yes, but
if I had to choose a more suitable interest to this
interview, I would say getting socially involved in projects and causes that really mean something and aim
to make a difference.
How do you relate your interests to iArts?
Through iArts, I manage, on occasion, to discover my
interests and start exploring them. There is still some
work there, but I am confident that during the 3rd
year, I can incorporate my interests more and more
into the things that I will do.
How do you relate your interests to the iArts
curriculum?
In iArts, we are expected to deliver certain assignments and tasks, from intellectual work to practical
skillset. I try to twist it and find ‘loopholes’ where I
can truly focus on making my own thing and discovering my strengths and needs. Still in the process of What do you enjoy most about iArts?

HAPPENING NOW
Year 2: ADAF Internship
S
tarting from the month of April, Eléonore and I started our 2-month internship for the International Digital Arts Festival in Athens, Greece. The
festival holds its 13th edition this year, and is presented 18-21 May 2017,
with the main topic of #PostFuture, inviting digital artists, animators and designers to participate by sharing and exhibiting their works. We have almost
completed a month of working closely with the main team, in their offices,
located at the centre of Athens. We have been engaging in activities that concern the ‘building’ and uploading of the website with this year’s programme,
uploading content regarding the works presented, the artists these belong
to and their bios.We have been translating and editing texts about the ADAF
Kids programme, but also
about sections such as Installations, A/V performances, Animation screenings, and more.

Eléonore and I are very happy
to be given this opportunity to further expand our learning experience with something as real as a festival that is in the process
of making. We witness and take part in creative and production
decisions, with a team of people that are efficient, productive and
fun to work with. Now, we cannot wait to get started with helping set up the works in the venue space!

Year 1: Imagine the Brain Imagining Human
I
n the beginning of March, we kicked off the third block of the
year, ‘Arts and Culture’, led and developed by artist Juul Sadée.
This year, the overarching theme of this block is Insider/Outsider. Within this theme, the focus has been placed on psychology
and the brain. Luckily, we have been able to combine these two
conceptual themes by visiting and working at Museum Dr. Guislain
in Ghent, Belgium. The museum, founded in 1986, is firstly a museum on the history of psychiatry, but on occasions hosts several
temporary exhibitions such as the exhibition of Outsider Art. The
institute hopes to prove that the concepts of ‘madness’ or ‘psychiatric disorder’ are not purely medical, as there is always a sociocultural and ideological foundation and cause behind them. We
aimed to use our insight from our time in the museum, alongside
our further research and lectures on ‘Language and the Brain’ by
Bert Weltens and ‘History of Insanity’ by Laurens Landeweerd, towards the development of our final artwork, which will be exhibited at Museum Dr. Guislain on the 6th of May till the 28th of May.

CULTURAL TIP
O
KunstTour 2017
n Friday the 2nd of June
until Monday the 5th,
the 18th ‘KunstTour’
will take place in Maastricht. The
annual tour provides the unique
opportunity to witness the variety of the cultural sector in Europe coming together in South
Limburg. There will be around
30 different locations hosting
contemporary art, performance
art, sound art, architecture, film,
photography, landscape art and design works and over 200 professional artists ready to display their work and
engage in art projects in and around the city centre and suburbs of Maastricht.
T
he ‘KunstTour’ gives the opportunity for young artists
to share their work. Second
year iArts student Eckstein-Kovács
Ráhel’s artwork ‘Hide and Seek’
will be part of this year’s tour. This
board brings the players right into
warfare in which they adopt the
roles of either a terrorist, civilian or
drone pilot and make moral decisions whether to take drone action
or not. It is a fully immersive game
that requires you to take or leave
your moral compass in order to
win. It is a matter of strategy and
sacrifice. To experience all of this,

you can check out ‘Hide and Seek’
at the Toneelacademie during the KunstTour days. Visit our Facebook page to stay tuned on further information about the programme.
