60secondsdance.dk online screendance competition is a co-production of
Dansens Dag and ScreenMoves, Copenhagen, Denmark. Hosted on
http://www.60secondsdance.dk and funded by Dansens Dag and Nordea-fonden,
it aims to give screendance makers the opportunity to produce, through their
lens, a one-minute online screendance video.
The winner and runner up and the top ten outstanding videos, will have their
work screened at the prize-winning event in the Cinemateque at the Danish Film
Institute and the DFI’s Asta Bar Wall Screen downstairs. The videos will also be
online at: Dansens Dag website, 60secondsdance.dk YouTube Channel,
ScreenMoves Facebook page and the ScreenMoves Installation site in the
Dansehallerne Foyer. Jeannette Ginslov, producer of MoveStream will interview
the winner and runner up via skype. MoveStream, is an online channel
dedicated to screendance interviews.
All the videos are uploaded and archived on http://www.60secondsdance.dk.
Favorites and regular updates will appear on the 60secondsdance.dkYoutube
Channel. For 2014, the theme is based on the notion of “flow”. Screendance
makers are invited to choreograph, shoot and edit what “flow” means to them:
what is flow, where is it found, what it means in terms of pace, rhythm, timing, is
it comedic, serious, philosophical, how is it portrayed in movement, the
emotional, the physical, the body…

Screendance maker’s Criteria
The 60secondsdance.dk competition is a response to the influence of
commercials, online screendance clips and the increased affordability of
camera’s, computers and access to the Internet. The competition format and time
limit force the screendance maker to sharpen his/her camera and editing skills, in
order to capture and amplify the notion of “flow”, as well as demonstrate the
ability to work with social media and the internet as a platform for screendance.
We challenge the screendance maker to show in 60 seconds what “flow” means
to them and relay this to the viewer, who needs to understand and “get it”
immediately. The limited time frame forces the maker to really think about what
“flow”. Any form of dance or movement may be used as long as the intention of
“flow” is amplified through the movement and the digital media. Not only will the
choreography of the movement be judged but the moving camera, the selection
of shots, the rhythm of the edit, location, sets, objects, costume, emotions,
overall aesthetic “look and feel”, will also be taken into account by the judges. No
documentaries and/or live recordings accepted.
To assist you, ask yourself:
Can I be sitting in theatre auditorium and watching this as a live dance
performance? If yes, it still belongs on the stage in the theatre. You as the
filmmaker have not used the medium of film or adapted the work for the genre of
screendance. The dance work has merely been recorded for the screen.
Ask yourself: Is it made for the genre and medium of screendance with a strong
intention? The medium of cinema and video need to be utilized to translate the
intention onto the screen.
Ask yourself: Is it made for the medium of the internet? Investigate how the
internet as a platform for screening dance and dance making, changes the way
you have to choreograph, shoot and edit, to adapt to the internet platform in
order to affect the viewer.
Ask yourself: Are the most important criteria in my film present: creativity and
originality, amplification of the intention or idea, choreography adapted to the
shots and movement of the camera, good rhythm, pace and timing in the edit, a
solid narrative – linear or poetic, excellent use of the location, costume, objects,
set, an appropriate overall aesthetic “look and feel”, good recordings of sounds
and music to amplify the notion of “flow”. We urge you the filmmaker to use
original music and/or the diegetic sound ie. from the shoot, the dancers and the
environment.
