Senior / Parent Night Information 2016 - 2017 Our AGENDA THE SENIOR YEAR BEGINS… COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTS SCHOLARSHIPS AND APPLICATION PROCESS CHAD SPENCER - DAVIDSON COLLEGE THOUGHT OF THE DAY “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” Vince Lombardi Steps to College Applications College shopping – try them on first Narrow choices to 3-5 colleges Attend Open Houses/Take virtual tours Campus Visits –College Day/Senior year Recommended Resource: CFNC.org The 5 P’s of Admission Program: course difficulty and course selection Performance: overall grades and grade trends, class standing (course selection makes the difference) Participation: extra-curriculars and leadership Personality: essays and letters of recommendation Potential: standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) Application Process Online Applications –Available at CFNC and college web sites Notify counseling that you need a transcript Note: CFNC receives and retrieves transcripts electronically. You will need student ID number. College Application Fee Waivers available to eligible students College Application Week – 11/14 – 11/18, 2016 Remember: The application paints a portrait! Applying –A Parent’s Role Get organized. Materials, folders, deadlines, checklists, timelines… Brainstorm together. Activities, awards, strengths, choices, feedback, support… Gather key information. SS #’s, school CEEB code 342329, Student ID #, etc. Make copies of everything Letters of Recommendation Provide recommender a resume, form, pertinent information, deadline… Present to recommender at least two weeks before due date Recommenders can be teachers, counselors, employers, community leaders, pastors, etc. Application may indicate who can be a recommender “Choose wisely.” Resume or “Brag Sheet” Biographical Info Awards/Honors Activities/Organizations Religious, Civic, Charitable Activities Employment Goals/Objectives SAT – ACT Don’t wait for test scores before submitting college applications. Request on the SAT/ACT registration to send score reports to your colleges/scholarship programs. Junior year ACT test scores must be linked to your student’s account. Fee Waivers available for eligible students. Take a picture ID, pencil, admission ticket and calculator with you to test. SAT – ACT Colleges require test scores to be sent directly from testing site, not from the high school New SAT vs Old SAT / ACT Plus Writing Take both ACT and SAT in Junior year Repeat the one you did better on in Senior year Most colleges like to see a Junior year and Senior year scores. (Optimum 3 scores) Scholarships Check with the college web site for scholarships Some colleges use the admissions application as a scholarship application. Example - ASU Others may have a separate application for scholarships. Scholarships in the Counseling Office: Fall: National and Specific College Spring: Local Scholarships/Rotary Loan Scholarships REMIND APP: Can be added to your phone or email. Scholarship searches (FastWeb.com, Scholarships.com, Cappex.com, etc.) Do not pay to find scholarships!
