Need help encouraging summer reading? Interested in having The Washington Redskins players visit Grange Hall? Please read below to find out how the Redskins can help incentivize summer reading, and how your child and Grange Hall can win. CCPS Redskins Read FAQ’s What is this program? Redskins Read Across Richmond program is an exciting partnership with the Washington Redskins and Chesterfield County Public Schools. This program’s objective is to implement an incentivized summer reading program to encourage elementary students to continue their education over the summer break. How will winners be determined? Students will have two ways of earning prizes. First, if they register for the summer reading program through Chesterfield County Public Library and record their minutes weekly, students are eligible for a weekly drawing for a free book and a trip to the treasure box. If they complete the 1,000 minutes, their name goes into the grand prize drawing of an iPad mini. Second, by turning in a log (either a print out from the public library or the Redskins paper log) to their teacher the first week of school, the Washington Redskins will declare a student winner at each school, a class winner at each school, and the school with the most minutes will win the grand prize of a Redskins Reading Rally at their school September 16, 2014. Who can participate in this program? Chesterfield County Public School students who are rising Pre-K through Grade 5 can participate in this program. Rising 6 graders will participate in the middle school program. Students are encouraged to use the Chesterfield County Public Library site https://virginia.evanced.info/chesterfield/sr/homepage.asp to enroll in this program to complete an online reading log. th We are working with the public library to register as many of our students as possible. An opt-out letter will be sent home during the week of May 22. Students whose parents opt out of registering online with the Chesterfield County Public Library may still participate in the Redskins Read challenge. They will record their reading minutes on the paper log and return the paper log to their teacher the first week of school (deadline is September 5, 2014). Their reading minute totals will be added to the Chesterfield County Public Library’s online data spreadsheet information once Chesterfield County Public Schools gets the data from the public library and then sent on to the Redskins. Copies of the log, parent info sheet, and correct grade level suggested reading list will be added to the final report cards of all elementary students in June. Teachers cannot participate in the Redskins Read program. BUT, teachers are encouraged to model summer reading by participating in the Chesterfield County Public Library’s online log for adults https://virginia.evanced.info/chesterfield/sr/homepage.asp?ProgramID=19 . Each week of recording their minutes enters them into the public library’s weekly drawings for a free book, and if they complete the 1,000 minute challenge, their names will be entered into the grand prize drawing for the iPad mini. How will students record their reading over the summer? Students are encouraged to track their reading minutes on the Chesterfield County Public Library online reading log; paper logs are available for those students without internet access. Ten minutes of reading is equal to one yard- 100 minutes of reading equals one touchdown. The goal is 1,000 minutes this summer (that is achievable if a child reads 20 minutes a day five times a week over the ten weeks of summer vacation, which means students can score 10 touchdowns over the summer). Students can begin logging their minutes June 14th. Please encourage students to attend the Chesterfield County Public Library’s kick-off June 14th from 4:00 -7:00 pm at EACH branch of the public library system.
