HISTORY OF AP DPO-UNITED




At the Asia Pacific Disabled Peoples' Organizations(DPOs)-United held along with a Bangkok
meeting toward the new decade of persons with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific on June 2122, 2010, the issue was discussed during sub-regional meetings including South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia and North-east Asia regions.
At the Delhi Workshop to Ratify and Implement the CRPD on August 18-22, 2011, participants
shared the necessity to create the AP-DPO UNITED and discussed the way of creation.
At the Preparatory Meeting to establish AP DPO-UNITED, co-hosted by the Korea Federation of
Organizations of the Disabled (KOFOD) and the Korean Solidarity for Preparation of 3rd Asia-Pa
cific Decade of Disabled Persons, held in Korea on September 5-7, 2011, participants agreed f
or secretariat of AP DPO United at the office of AP DPI and to create the preparatory committe
e composed of ten members considering region and disability type.
Preparatory Committee Members include five PWDs

- Javed Abidi (India)
Members had the first round meeting of the preparatory committee in Bangkok on December
2011 during the ESCAP stakeholder meeting and second meeting on March 2012 at the ESCAP
high-level meeting.
WHAT IS AP DPO-UNITED



Regional unified organization of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in
Asia and the Pacific for effective implementation of the 3rd Asian an
d the Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons.
Through AP DPO-United mechanism, PWDs want to participate in the
3rd Decade as the main entity in a systematic way.
Based on disability perspective, PWDs want to participate in and rev
iew each country's implementation status and to strengthen informa
tion sharing and support among them through international cooperat
ions and meetings.
OBJECTIVES OF AP DPO-UNITED
To advocate the sovereignty and autonomy of
Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
and
 To realize the full participation and equality of
Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as a human
being who has dignity and value through joint
efforts in Asia and the Pacific region.

PURPOSES OF AP DPO-UNITED









To create an inclusive society for all people regardless of disabilities for f
ull participation and equality with others of persons with disabilities.
To eradicate political, economical, educational, social and cultural prejud
ice and discrimination against persons with disabilities.
To against human rights violation and on sovereignty movement of perso
ns with disabilities.
To implement the UN CRPD in Asia and the Pacific region.
To implement and evaluate of the Asian and Pacific Decades of Persons
with Disabilities for the development of the international society.
To support mutual cooperation, coordination and exchange among organ
izations of persons with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific.
To research and study for implementing projects and activities mentione
d in Article 4.
To serve as international cooperation project to build capacity and to sup
port social participation of persons with disabilities.
To be resources development for activities and projects in Asia and the P
acific region.
MEMBERSHIP OF AP DPO-UNITED




A self-help organization of persons with disabilities only can be a full membe
r of the United and a disability-related organization
can be joined in as an associate member.
Full-membership
1. Self-help organization of persons with disabilities representing disability
type, disability cause and gender.
2. Organization who has a disabled president and disabled members, and
half of members in decision making body are persons with disabilities.
3. National or regional-based organizations in each country.
Associate Membership
1. Disability-related organization
2. Organization who doesn’t meet full requirements of full-membership.
3. Expert groups
Organizations in each country shall be joined in the United as the unified nati
onal organization or shall be joined in individually. If multiple organizations in
one country would join in the United, each organization shall has its represe
ntative, but for a national representative meeting of the United, multiple orga
nizations shall select or make one organization through cooperation.
