Watch the 8 minute video clip on fishing and answer the questions below as you watch the
video. Bring this completed form to the next class.
1) Watch “What Happened to the Grand Banks Cod?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5wR8Iu2Q00 . List all
possible causes of the decline of Atlantic Cod in the Grand Banks.
2) Draw Mr. Andersen's concept map in the space below to help you connect the concepts.
3) Reference your textbook for specific methods of fishing (make a list of the different types of commercial fishing). Ms.

a)
b)
c)
d)
4) Calculate the percent change in fish tons harvested between 1955-1965.You should have your work written out and
be able to do the calculation without a calculator.
5) Helpful Hint: Think of the slope of the line as the growth rate...a flat line indicates a slow or no growth rate. The
steeper the line, the higher the growth rate.
6) True or False: If you catch the amount of fish equal to the fish population's growth rate, the fish population will
change.
7) When fishing, why should fisherman never exceed the growth rate of the population?
8) Helpful Knowledge: GM salmon were approved in the US in November 2015. It will be a few years before they are
sold in stores. GM salmon were approved to be farmed in land-locked farms, so that if any GM salmon do escape, they
will not compete with native populations.
9) How will the concepts of total allowable catch and quotes help to prevent overfishing?
10) Pause the video and fill in the blanks of the concept map below. DO IT.
