DRAFT North Beach Elementary General PTA Meeting May 9, 2017 6:30 pm North Beach Elementary Cafeteria 6:37 Call to order. In Attendance: Megan Stewart, Tara Nessan, Jessica Bjorklund, Jodi Somm, Karin LaBelle, Julie Cox, Heather Coutts, Carolyn Hostetler, Kristine McLane, Rebecca Peacock, Jen Osborn, Suzanne Hurley, Russell Sewell, Hee Rae Cho, Karlie Savo, Diane Coyne, Stacey Perti, Phillipa Dugaw January 10, 2017 North Beach General PTA meeting minutes approved. Whitman Middle School Recruit Looking for PTSA board members, particularly an interest in co-positions. With the opening of the new middle school it presents a unique opportunity to shape Whitman’s culture. Feeder schools: Adams, Loyal Heights, Whittier, and North Beach. Population will be around 500. See attachment (add hall parent position). Principal’s Report Thank you for staff appreciation week. Start time will not be known until the end of May. Currently slated for the 8:002:30 bell time, with 20 minutes of instruction time to be added on. Tentatively looks like 75 minutes early release every Wednesday. Staffing update: K and 1st teachers hired, vacancies still in upper grades. Seattle Education Grants brought in $11,000 for next year. Legislative Report State Legislate is in special session with the main focus education funding. Currently little progress is being made, an additional special session is expected. PTA Report Focus on making the PTA an inclusive community open to all. Financially we get a tremendous amount of support from the Annual Giving Campaign, Auction, and walk-a-move-a-jog-a-thon (WMJ). Looking for Auction and WMJ chairs, among other positions. School survey is being written to find out how the PTA is doing to support every student in our school; possible questions to be submitted to PTA co-presidents. Thanks and appreciation to all school volunteers. Mini grants: Ms. Butler requested $416 for classroom accommodations. Grant approved. Awards for Acorn, Advocate, Educator Outstanding Educator: Ms. Coutts Outstanding Advocate: Ms. Hostetler Golden Acorn: Tara Nessan & Mary Balmaceda Nominations for 2017-2018 PTA Board WSPTA Uniform Bylaws Article 5, Section 6 was read by Secretary Tara Nessan. All candidates meet the requirements of the WSPTA Uniform Bylaws: Co-presidents: Phillipa Dugaw & Kerry Schultz Vice-president: Mary Balmaceda Secretary: Suzanne Hurley Treasurer: Megan Stewart The signed report was handed to President Phillipa Dugaw. President Dugaw reread the proposed slate of officers. President Dugaw asked for nominations from the floor for co-presidents, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. There were no additional nominations and the president declared the nominations closed. The nominees were declared elected in accordance with WSPTA Bylaws Article 5 Section 6B. Financial Report and Vote on 2017-2018 Budget Budget committee met two times previously this spring. Overall operating budget is higher than previous years, and expenditures were less for this year, with approximately $20,000 that will roll over. Question from the floor: Scrip is lower due to not acquiring new cards for this year. Program is being phased out. Question from the floor: Increase in budgets reflects higher student population next year. Question from the floor: Provide water for additional portable. Question from the floor: The district provides classroom furniture. Question from the floor: PD funds used for consultants, professional observations, and teacher materials. Question from the floor: Directory will be online. Question from the floor: Art curriculum has been the same for several years and is only half of the school year. Is a scheduling concern more than a budgetary concern. Increased funding to help support a more robust art curriculum. Question: Second Step, etc. is required by the district but could possibly be done by the classroom teacher. Suggestion to hire a part-time certificated art teacher to make of for required planning time. Question: P6 needs a bulletin board. Will use this years building funds for additional bulletin boards. Question: Fund an education consultant to support teacher’s work with highly capable students. Motion to approve the proposed 2017-2018. Approved. Call to adjourn 8:06pm.
