THE NEWSLETTER AT THE ROOTS OF THE GRAND UNION BENEFICE OF BLISWORTH AND STOKE BRUERNE/ SHUTLANGER, WITH GRAFTON REGIS, ALDERTON AND MILTON MALSOR Message from our Rector Dear Reader, So here we are with this edition heralding in the month of July. How did that happen so fast? It only feels like yesterday that we celebrated the New Year and in the blink of an eye, we now find ourselves already halfway through 2017. What’s the saying? - Time flies when you’re having fun. Hopefully we will have many days filled with sunshine and fun in the coming weeks as summer reaches its heights. Many of us will be looking forward to going on holiday and I shall soon be making my preparations for my annual trip to the Greenbelt Festival. This Christian festival has been in existence for over forty years. It is held for four days over the August Bank holiday weekend and it has been situated at its new home in the grounds of Boughton House in Kettering for the past three years. Thousands of people camp for the whole festival; many others buy day passes. I always opt to camp but on occasions I have wondered if that was the best choice when the weather has not been too kind, but looking on the bright side it’s fun to dance in the puddles with your wellies on! On offer is a huge variety of talks, performances, worship, arts, music, workshops etc. My problem is always having to choose from all that is on offer and I guess that’s one of the reasons that I go back year after year because there is just so much to see and do. If you have never been or if it has been a long time since you last experienced Greenbelt, why not consider coming along this year? You can take a look at their website for details of this year’s line-up and the cost of tickets or I do have a few copies of last year’s programme if you would prefer a paper copy. Maybe I shall bump into you at a Celtic late-night Communion service, sitting in a lecture, listening to a band on the main stage, or raising a glass in The Jesus Arms bar. It would be great to see you. Rev’d Andrea Streetchurch The Benefice team is on duty again at Streetchurch on Sunday 16 July. The team will be Linda, Joy, Andrea, Roger and Doris. Blisworth donations will be collected from the church porch, before 11.30 a m please. Jean Glanville will co-ordinate Grafton donations (01908 543463). Alderton donations to either Doris (01327 811420) or Linda (01327 811265). Stoke Bruerne donations to Andrea (01604 864280) or Roger (01604 862473). Items required are: sandwiches, cakes, wrapped biscuits (these are very useful for the pack ups which are made up from surplus food) and very much looked forward to. That is Sunday tea taken care of for most of the clients!! Fruit (bananas are a favourite as are small oranges), crisps, orange squash and/or fruit squash. I still provide soup which goes down well in summer or winter, and also tea and coffee. Many thanks to all of you who give so generously when we are on duty and also for the bags of clothes which I often come home to and find by my door. I very rarely know who are the donors but to you generous folk, my thanks and those of the Streetchurch recipients. This year the event took place entirely inside Abingdon Park, using the hilly terrain to add some extra difficulty. Despite this, and my daughter, Linda, and I completed the 10k in a respectable time of 1hour 55 minutes. Many thanks to my sponsors who this year helped me raise over £300 towards Cancer Research. Betty Richardson Stoke Bruerne Village Design Statement Following the survey carried out in 2015, this document has now been approved by South Northants District Council as a 'Supplementary Planning Document’ that will cover Stoke Bruerne village and the whole of the parish when assessing any future planning applications. Also for any resident when alterations are considered to their property. The document was put together by a committee of members of the Parish Council and village residents and it can be viewed on line at http://www.stokebruerneparishcouncil.org.uk. There is also a copy in the village hall. Stoke Bruerne School We are already into our second week of the last term of school before the summer holidays. Class 3 children are enjoying the warmer weather and their PE sessions are taking place up at the recreation ground in Stoke Bruerne. They have been taking part in a variety of sports including rounders and cricket. During the summer term years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have also been taking part in swimming lessons once a week. This year they have been travelling to the pool at The Gateway School in our new minibus, which we are all very excited about. If you see a minibus with Forest Federation on the side whilst you are out and about please give us a wave as we go past! Canal Partnership It’s halfway through the year already so it’s time for an update on the work of the Canal Partnership and its Adoption Group of willing volunteers. The latest project for our monthly work parties has been cleaning down and painting the black and white railings round the dry lock - a mammoth task in which we were helped by a corporate group from Nationwide/Carillion. The lock itself was also cleaned of litter and weeds. Earlier in the year the volunteers did a sterling job of siding out and cutting back the woodland walk path – we hope you have enjoyed the result. The next task day will be Wednesday 12 July starting at 9.30 a m – all tools etc provided, and you will be very welcome. The Partnership has been working with CRT on its embryo plans for improvements and alterations to the museum to allow disabled access, better interactive displays and an improved cafe. It’s very early days yet but potentially exciting ideas are being worked on. Amongst several issues being followed up, that of speeding cyclists is currently quite a concern. The summer weather encourages cycling to work in particular, but unfortunately sometimes with scant regard for other towpath users. We are encouraging CRT to introduce a cycling dismount zone and a ‘share the space’ initiative. Another area which has caused concern is that of the Lower Locks and again we are working with CRT and Northants Police to see what can be done to improve the situation there. You may remember the Over and Under the Hill heritage boat ride and walk experience we introduced two years ago. This involves a boat trip through the Blisworth tunnel with full commentary on its construction followed by a return walk on public rights of way, with walk leaders pointing out local historic features. This year there will be two chances to take part: Saturday 29 July starting at 5.00 p m and Sunday 3 September at 9.30 a m, both starting and finishing from the Museum Green. Please book July 2017 www.grassnews.co.uk -2- Volume 37, Issue 7 through the Museum or for more details, visit our website www.stokebruernecanalpartnership.org.uk. Chairperson, Stoke Bruerne Canal Partnership Fireworks on 15 July The Lock 16 fireworks will be on 15 July this year at about 10.30 p m. Helen Westlake, Michael Hornsby SHUTLANGER Parish Council The Parish Council met on 11 May for its annual general meeting. We discussed the issue of parking around the village and would like to remind villages to park with consideration when parking on kerbs. Some of the pavements in the village are quite narrow and makes it difficult for pedestrians on foot, people in wheelchairs or those pushing prams to get by cars parked on pavements. The issue of dog mess has been raised again, and we would like to point out that allowing your dog to foul the pavement is an offence that dog owners can be fined for. We would like to remind villagers that the village web address is: shutlangerparishcouncil.org.uk. Please have a look from time to time to see what's going on in and around the village. Finally we are glad to say that we have replaced the three ageing flower boxes mounted on the signs at the entrances to the village. Please feel free to top the flower boxes' water reservoirs through the holes on top. Shutlanger Parish Council Dog Fouling Polite reminder to all dog owners in Shutlanger village: please do not let your dogs foul in the play park; this is a play area for parents and children, not a place for your dog to relieve itself. Imagine the shock as a parent, when in the park recently, there was dog mess by the slide which had not been cleaned up by its neglectful owner. To all the responsible dog owners, a big thank you for cleaning up after your dog/dogs. A concerned villager and parent GRAFTON REGIS History Festival On the weekend of 17 and 18 June, the Grafton history group took part in the History Festival at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes. The weather was maybe a little too hot to be in a marquee all weekend, but it was a great event. There were re-enactment groups fighting battles, musical entertainment, storytelling and local history groups happy to tell you all about their local history. Entrance was free and there were lots of food stalls. On the same weekend, we had a walk and talk event on the Saturday afternoon and a food through the ages meal at the village hall in the evening. It was quite a busy weekend. The previous weekend we had an open churchyard weekend at the church with a plant sale to celebrate Cherishing Churchyards week. Many thanks to all the villagers who provide the plants, a really good quantity and choice and the cakes. Jean BLISWORTH Tile Cleaning The project has started and Marc Cheesman of Victorian Mosaic in Northampton has begun the job of repairing and replacing the damaged tiles. When examined closely, there were a great number of tiles to be replaced which is the first part of the project. Then Marc will commence the cleaning process once the new tiles are settled. However, I would like to thank everybody who has donated money so far to help pay for the project but we are still collecting, if you have not had the chance to donate so far. We are offering everyone a chance to “buy a tile” for only £10 each. There is no limit on the number of tiles you can purchase and, of course, if you can Gift Aid your donation, the church can claim a further 25% of the value of your donation. So, if anyone feels able to help the cause and contribute to brightening up the inside of the church for now and for future generations, please ring John Smith on 01604 859361 to find out how your contribution can be made. Churchyard Tidy Project Jonathon Smith of JMS Landscaping Services is also presently clearing the churchyard of unwanted foliage and generally tidying up the entire area as part of the overall quinquennial report requirements. Gutters are being cleared and previously hidden gravestones are being revealed as a result of the clearing work. The old boiler house building at the rear of the church is also to be removed as part of the project. July 2017 www.grassnews.co.uk -3- Volume 37, Issue 7 Plenty of “before and after” photos have been taken and it is our intention to create an information sheet about the tile cleaning, churchyard clearance, as well as the recent window cleaning projects. Community Choir The Community Choir will be presenting the second of their summer concerts at St John the Baptist Church, Blisworth on Thursday 20 July, starting at 7.30 p m. Admission is free but there will be a retiring collection as well as a raffle, the proceeds of which will be donated the tile cleaning project in Blisworth Church. World Vision Hilary Spurrier will be hosting a garden party in support of World Vision at her home at 2, Towcester Road, Blisworth on Tuesday 18 July from 3.30 p m until 7.30 p m. All are welcome and if you can let Hilary know you are planning to attend, it always assists with the catering arrangements. Alderton Arts Festival – Helpers Needed Once again Alderton is planning its 41st Arts Festival to be held on the weekend of 2/3 September. The 2015 and 2016 Art Festivals drew in 450 and 430 people respectively (i.e. people who paid to enter the painting exhibition in the church) and average profits of £4,000 per annum have been achieved over the last 4 years. So it’s well worth doing, great fun but it is hard work. We are grateful to our regular group of helpers but we could really do with some more help to share the load. Could I please ask our regular group of helpers to confirm to me which dates they can commit to and can I also appeal to all NEW helpers to contact me with dates that they can commit to too. See dates below. Many thanks. Charlie Reece – Chairman Alderton Arts Festival: [email protected], tel: 07818 443508. July 2017 www.grassnews.co.uk -4- Volume 37, Issue 7 Pentecost A short note of sincere thanks and appreciation to our Churchwarden, Mrs Selvey and her team of helpers for opening and staffing St Margaret’s Church between Ascension Day and Pentecost to support the prayer for ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. I am sure all who took advantage of it join me in gratitude. Trevor Woodger Village Sign at the Eastern Boundary of the Village As many of you will have noticed, the sign has been missing for several months. It was loosened and damaged in the spring gales and sadly was subject to some vandalism. You can now see that after some tlc and strong arm utilisation, it has been restored, almost to its former glory. The wooden structure has been refurbished, the hedge trimmed back and ditch partly cleared, making the entry to our village more welcoming. Thanks go to William Barry of Alderton and his friend, Michael Pentland – thank you both for your time and help with this task. Trevor Woodger Steve Donnelly, RIP We were saddened to hear of the recent death of Steve Donnelly. Steve lived in Alderton for several years and became involved in village life; his company was kind enough to decorate our church at one point. His funeral service was held in Alderton on 29 June. We send our condolences to his family. MILTON MALSOR Mums and Tots This takes place every Friday morning through term time at Milton Malsor Village Hall from 9.30 a m until 11.30 a m. All mums and tots welcome. Community Choir The Blisworth community choir presented a delightful concert at Holy Cross Church on 22 June. An appreciative audience listened to a rich variety of musical items. A retiring collection was held on behalf of the Stroke Association. Coffee Mornings The monthly coffee mornings continue on the first Saturday from 10.00 a m to 12.00 noon at Holy Cross. One feature of the coffee mornings is the huge collection of excellent books given to the church and worth looking through for some bargains. The Church is Open The success of the Experience Pentecost event in which Holy Cross was open all day for ten days with prayers at 8.00 a m and 7.00 p m each day has encouraged the church to seek to open the its doors more. Churches used to be open but fear of theft and vandalism has meant that they are locked up most of the time. Churches should be respected as spaces where peace may be found. Hallowed by centuries of prayer and devotion our churches must once again be accessible as community resources. Malcolm Deacon GENERAL NEWS Monday Group This will take place on Monday 3 July at Milton Malsor church. This month, we will be meeting at 12.00 noon at the church and then going on to Delapre Abbey to have a picnic lunch and a wander around the garden and grounds. Please bring your picnic with you, and something to sit on. Festival of Scarecrows St Leonard’s Church fete and festival of scarecrows will take place Saturday 1 July from12.00 noon to 4.00 p m in Yardley Gobion. Notes from a Local Farmer It must be a couple of months since we last spoke, and a lot has happened since then. We finished a successful lambing with the weather being kind at turnout; it was a very dry spring, but not cold. We completed the spring drilling, which all germinated; we drilled deeper this year because the ground was dry and we needed to find moisture. So far, we had ample rain in May so the crops are looking very pleasing. As of 12 June, we are starting shearing. We have contractors from New Zealand – three men and a girl, who will shear 600 sheep a day. The lambs are doing well. They have been wormed and a low fly spray has been applied. Some will be ready for market soon. The price is very good at the moment. We will be hay making next, so there’s plenty going on. ‘Speak’ to you soon. Robert Davy July 2017 www.grassnews.co.uk -5- Volume 37, Issue 7 Police & Crime Commissioner Launches Public Consultation on Changes to the Governance of The Fire & Rescue Service The Office of the Northants Police and Crime Commissioner has recently launched a public consultation regarding proposals for the governance of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service to transfer from the Fire Authority which currently sits in Northamptonshire County Council, to the Police and Crime Commissioner, who would therefore become the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner. There is a short animated film and leaflet to explain the proposal - both can be viewed by visiting www.northantsfireproposals.co.uk Stephen Mold, Northants Police and Crime Commissioner said: “Northamptonshire has led the way in demonstrating how emergency service collaboration can help to increase efficiency and effectiveness, and I’m determined that we build on this work to continue to create a safer county. Bringing the Police and the Fire and Rescue Service under a single governance model will save significant amounts of public money which we will reinvest into increasing frontline services. We will increase funding into the frontline by sharing premises and combining administrative functions and also potentially increasing the amount we ask the public to pay by only 3 pence per week. The new governance proposal will enable us to make quicker strategic decisions and increase our preventative work across both police and fire areas while giving the public a level of transparency when it comes to spending by the Fire and Rescue Service that hasn’t been available under the previous governance model. Having reviewed the business case for this proposal, I’m confident that a change in governance is in the best interests of everyone in Northamptonshire. However, we want to hear from as many people as possible in the county around their views and concerns, to ensure they are accurately represented as we move forward” The Commissioner is really keen to hear your views and those of your family and friends on this proposal. To find out more and complete the online survey please visit www.northantsfireproposals.co.uk . The consultation will run until Tuesday 1 August 2017 and is open to all residents of the county.
