Call for Conference Participation
Aims of the Workshop
Elucidating the cognitive and neural mechanisms of human consciousness remains one of the
greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century. We would like to invite you to join us in this
endeavor and to participate in the 2nd international workshop on the “Neuro-cognitive mechanisms
of conscious and unconscious visual perception” on June 30 – July 2, 2014. The workshop takes
place at the beautiful Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Study) in Delmenhorst,
Germany, close to Bremen, which provides a unique setting for stimulating conferences. This
three-day meeting is organized by the German Research Network on consciousness research and
is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg.
This workshop will bring together leading researchers from different fields of human consciousness
research such as visual masking, attention, subliminal priming and impairments of awareness
following brain-damage using different experimental approaches and methodologies (e.g.,
behavioral, EEG, TMS, neuroimaging, single cell recordings). A search for convergences between
different views and approaches could help to foster the vision of unified theory of conscious and
unconscious visual perception.
The following invited speakers will present their latest research in plenary talks:
Ulrich Ansorge, Vienna, Austria
Bruno Breitmeyer, Houston, USA
Niko Busch, Berlin, Germany
Axel Cleeremans, Brussels, Belgium
Bianca deHaan, Tübingen, Germany
Roberto dellAcqua, Padua, Italy
Martin Eimer, London. U.K.
Andreas Engel, Hamburg, Germany
Melvyn Goodale, London, Ontario, Canada
Fred Hamker, Chemnitz, Germany
John-Dylan Haynes, Berlin, Germany
Robert Kentridge, Durham, U.K.
Christian Kaernbach, Kiel, Germany
Markus Kiefer, Ulm, Germany
Rafael Malach, Rehovot, Israel
Uwe Mattler, Göttingen, Germany
Michael Niedeggen, Berlin, Germany
Heiko Reuss, Würzburg, Germany
Anil Seth, Sussex, U.K.
Frank Tong, Nashville, U.S.A.
Rolf Verleger, Lübeck, Germany
Ralph Weidner, Jülich, Germany
In addition to these talks, a poster session will give participants the opportunity to present
experimental results of their best work. Selected poster presenters will be awarded to write a peerreviewed article for a special issue of Consciousness and Cognition, in which the conference
proceedings will be published.
Due to the relatively small size of this conference, we expect a highly stimulating atmosphere that
provides the basis for a fruitful and exciting intellectual exchange.
Application for Workshop Participation
In addition to the invited speakers, the workshop is open for up to 40 participants who may attend
as discussants and/or poster presenters. For these participants, there is a workshop fee of 120 €
(reduced fee of 80 € for partially employed participants such as graduate and doctoral students).
Workshop material, shuttle service from the hotel to the conference site, daily lunch, welcome
dinner buffet including alcoholic beverages on the first day, dinner on the second day, snacks and
drinks during the conference breaks are complimentary. Note, however, that costs for
accommodation are not included in the workshop fees.
As the number of participants for this conference is limited, it is advisable to apply early for
participation (application deadline February 28, 2014). If there are more applications than
available places, the workshop committee not only takes the time of submitting your application
into account, but also strives to consider as many countries and institutions as possible when
reviewing the applications. Application forms can be downloaded from the HanseWissenschaftskolleg website at http://www.h-w-k.de/index.php?id=2074. Filled and signed forms
should be sent to Marion Daniel at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg by Email ([email protected]).
When your application is accepted, after the deadline you will receive a registration form from the
Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg by Email with further instruction regarding transfer of conference fees
and hotel reservations.
If you intend to present a poster, please submit its title and an abstract (not longer than 250 words
excluding title, authors and affiliations) together with your workshop application. Poster abstracts
will be reviewed and accepted depending on their quality and significance to the field. A maximum
number of 24 posters can be presented due to space limitations.
Further information regarding this workshop can be obtained from the scientific organizers Markus
Kiefer ([email protected]), Michael Niedeggen ([email protected]) and Bruno
Breitmeyer ([email protected]) or from Marion Daniel ([email protected]). Alternatively,
visit the conference websites at http://www.h-w-k.de/index.php?id=2074 or http://www.uniulm.de/unbewusst/index-Dateien/CUVP_2014.htm.
We hope seeing you in June 2014 in Delmenhorst at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg.
Best regards
Markus Kiefer, Michael Niedeggen, Bruno Breitmeyer
