Gain a new perspective on the relationship between governments, politics and markets Reconsider the American economy from a comparative and interconnected perspective While deadlines vary depending on the program, plan to apply for the spring semester in early October and for the summer, fall semester or academic year in February. Types of Programs Develop communication and language skills Practice problem solving through working, studying and living in an unfamiliar context Gain exposure to how professionals abroad may frame and interpret questions differently Understand how to work with people, companies and organizations from other countries/cultures Explore potential new career directions Develop confidence, a strengthened sense of personal identity, flexibility, and creativity Become more culturally sensitive and curious When to Study Abroad Many undergraduate economics students study abroad during their junior year. It is best to go abroad after finishing the core theory sequence so that students can take advantage of region specific or topical economics electives. All students considering study abroad should meet with their academic advisor to determine eligibility and carefully sequence coursework around travel plans. University Exchange As Carnegie Mellon sends its students to these programs; it receives students from its foreign partners. Carnegie Mellon students participating in these programs continue to pay tuition directly to Carnegie Mellon and receive the same financial aid package. Students are responsible for room, board, travel, and miscellaneous expenses. University Sponsored Programs Study abroad programs that have been approved as University Sponsored Programs allow students to pay regular Carnegie Mellon tuition, plus room and board, and receive the same financial aid package. External Programs External Programs allow students to pay the study abroad program directly, while still maintaining fulltime enrollment status at Carnegie Mellon. Students participating in External Programs do not pay tuition and fees to Carnegie Mellon for the time abroad. Institutional aid from Carnegie Mellon is not applicable for these programs, but federal and state aid may still be used. Financial Aid and Scholarships Review the section above for specific information regarding the use of financial aid abroad. Scholarships are also available through the Dietrich Dean’s Office for majors in the Dietrich College.
