Unit 1 - Introduction to VEX Robotics

Unit 1 - Introduction to VEX
Robotics
Lesson 2 – Building the VEX Clawbot
Unit 1 – Introduction to VEX Robotics
Objectives for Today
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
• Name and describe the main components in
the VEX robotics system.
• Use the components and tools provided to
build the basic model of the VEX Clawbot
robot.
Unit 1 – Introduction to VEX Robotics
Starter
Try to match the name of the component in the VEX robotics system with
the correct image shown below.

Unit 1 – Introduction to VEX Robotics
____________
VEX Components
• The VEX robotics system makes use of a
number of different components to enable
the construction of different robots.
• Each component has a different job – it is
important to understand what each is for so it
can be used correctly!
• In your groups discuss and write down on the
back of your starter sheet what you think each
component is used for.
Unit 1 – Introduction to VEX Robotics
The VEX Clawbot Robot
• The VEX Clawbot robot is a
kit made up of different VEX
components.
• We are going to build the
basic model to get to know
the VEX System and how it
works.
• Later you will get the chance
to use the same components
to build your own design!
Additional Activity:
If possible use Autodesk
Inventor to produce a CAD
drawing of the VEX Clawbot
using the standard parts
available (see Unit 2.1
Autodesk Inventor Clawbot
Build for how to use
Autodesk Inventor).
Unit 1 – Introduction to VEX Robotics
Time to Build the Clawbot!
• In your groups you are now going
to build the VEX Clawbot model!
• Resource managers need to
collect the Clawbot instructions
manual and make sure you have
all the necessary parts in your kit
(pages 2-5).
• Work as a team to construct the
main chassis of the robot (pages
6-15). Ignore step 24 for now.
• Remember your team roles!
Unit 1 – Introduction to VEX Robotics
Plenary
• Now you have had the chance to use the main
components of the VEX system you should
have a better idea of how they work and what
they are used for.
• Compare your answers at the start of the
lesson to what you now know and amend
them as necessary.
• Next lesson we will add wiring and electrics
and test the robot!
