Town of Hammonton 609-567-4300
Facts:
The state is requiring Hammonton to lower its water use because
the aquifer that supplies all the Town’s drinking water has come
under serious strain. During the summer months the average amount of water
used by Hammonton residents doubles. Unless summer water use is reduced the town
may be forced to install an expensive water supply well.
The Hammonton Water Conservation Initiative is supported by the William Penn Foundation and is
organized by the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions, the Hammonton Green Committee,
the Pinelands Preservation Alliance and the Town of Hammonton.
So what can be done.......Use Less Water! By using less water, the aquifer
will have more available. It will also help avoid the need for a new well. It is the quickest
and cheapest way for the town to solve some serious problems. Hammonton residents
have taken positive steps in this direction, but there is more work to be done.

To apply 1/2 inch of water to a 32 x 32 foot lawn
using a standard garden hose requires 310
gallons of water. So watering 4 times per week
will require 1,240 gallons at a cost of $127
per growing season. Watering a 64 x 64
foot lawn would therefore require 2,480 gallons
per week and cost $254 per season.
