Cobham Antenna Systems– Microwave Antennas
Specialise in the design and development of high gain, printed circuit arrays, ultra wide-band spirals, multi-octave bicones,
high gain collinear Omni-directional microwave antennas for specialist defence, telecommunications and commercial
applications from its 1500m2 premises on a 3.5 acre site in Newmarket, Suffolk, UK. Products manufactured currently
cover frequencies from 200 MHz to 28 GHz with design capabilities up to 40 GHz.
The antennas provided include Flat panel, sector, low profile, omni, hemi omni, dipole, helix and broadband antennas for
internal or external locations on masts, windows, walls, ceilings, UAV’s, helicopters, aircraft, missiles, racing cars, railway
systems, TV cameras, Naval & Merchant Marine, Oil Platforms, weather buoys and satellites with over 1600 antenna
designs produced to date.
These are used globally by some of the world's largest electronics and communications companies and Include wireless
LAN, Wi-Fi, Fixed Radio Access, broadband wireless access, security, video surveillance, telemetry, outside broadcast,
microcell base station antennas, directional antennas for subscriber units and UMTS markets.
The company provides antenna solutions on a global basis with approximately 70% of its output being exported.
Military Satellite & Security Applications
The products are used globally in military, security and satellite applications by some of the world’s largest defence electronics and communications companies in applications for radar,
telemetry, satcoms, security and communications systems where traditional technologies are too bulky, such as in surveillance and front-line, man-pack devices.

and compliances with the relevant ISO9001:2000 (UK, European & USA) and relevant ETSI
specifications.
Applicable environmental testing is conducted as required for the specific application being
developed.

Technically speaking

design approach and relevant materials will be chosen to achieve the required reliability
and performance
On-Site RF Testing Capabilities
The spherical near field test facility provides radiation pattern data to verify specifications comply
with radiation pattern envelopes. The far field radiation pattern of the antenna can be calculated in any
direction, in any polarity (circular or linear) and at any angle. Operating within 1.5 GHz to 40 GHz
frequency range, the chamber has a quiet zone for antennas up to 1.5 Mt long whilst the turning stage
permits antennas up to 130 kg to be tested. The range will provide gain measurements as well as
directivity.
Back projections can be performed on to a given plane within the measurement sphere.
A holographic back projection on to the aperture of the antenna highlights material elements that could
affect antenna performance and enables them to be resolved at the design stage.
It is possible to determine the affects of coupling within a circuit that may cause amplitude phase
corruption within an array or if there is unwanted radiation off the feed circuit.

Application Notes - Aircraft – UAV Antennas – 12.2008.
Cobham Antenna Systems (Microwave Antennas) has developed and supplied antenna designs for a number of different airborne communication applications; these
have been installed on a range of military & civilian tethered, rotary and fixed wing airframes from small UAV’s through to BAE Systems NIMROD and Lockheed C-130
Hercules aircraft for use in civilian, security and military applications to support either Command or Data Links or both including audio, telemetry and video surveillance
applications, utilising both analogue, digital and COFDM techniques
The type of antenna supplied is dependent upon the communications and environmental criteria specified by the customer, whilst most have been a single linear
polarised omni directional antennas, a number have been Flat Panel directional antennas.
The Omni antennas are generally Ground Plane independent and are designed with an extended radome tube to provide additional spacing at the antenna base to
minimise the effects of the aircraft body on the antennas performance.
Circularly polarised single and multiple stacked antenna solutions have also been developed for L and S Band applications both for installation externally where
optimised aerodynamically tailored radome / covers have been provided and also mounted internally within the aircraft.
Frequency ranges offered extend from the UHF bands through to 5.5 GHz to date.
A full range of complimentary Multi-Sector Ground / Base Station antennas has also been developed, dependent upon the requirement these can contain up to 7
sectors and have space within the product available for the mounting of additional application specific switching or electronics hardware if required.
Testing and qualification can be undertaken if required, tests can include vibration ranges, mechanical shock and environmental conditions.
In many cases the aircraft systems integrator will carry out all applicable testing required to obtain System Qualification.
