Business Prospectus: The Key 2 Freedom The Story Behind the Organization What do you see when you pass someone in a wheelchair? Do you see someone destined to a life of hopelessness and limited opportunities; someone who will always be dependent on others? Does the sight conjure up feelings of guilt and pity? Yes is the wrong answer. Just ask Mohammad Sayed, a young entrepreneur, who at the age of 19, has lived and learned more than most of us can imagine. The Boy in the Wheelchair Mohammad, or Moh, as he is often called, was born in Afghanistan. At the age of 5 he lost his mother. Two weeks later, he was paralyzed when his house was bombed. For the next 7 years, Moh was a permanent resident of an Italian-run hospital in Afghanistan. Left there by his father, he was on his own. American Beckons In 2009, Moh was brought to the states by his new mother, an American nurse. Here he underwent numerous surgeries, which combined to extend his life expectancy 3-fold, and his spine by 6 inches. Today, Moh is a high school graduate, film producer, inventor, writer and proud citizen of the United States. He is happy and healthy and he wants to give back! An Entrepreneur at Heart Entrepreneurship is nothing new to Moh. At the age of 8, while still living alone at the hospital, he started a small business selling and repairing cellphones to cover his costs. Now his aspirations are far bolder. About a year ago, Moh established his company, Rim Power, and started the creation of “Wheelchair Man,” a comic book character based on his personal story. This superhero is a wheelchair user who uses his special power of prescience to help villains understand the drastic outcomes of their criminal acts. Wheelchair man is about hope and peace…he is also about possibility. The possibility for those who are in wheelchairs to live lives, which are full and dignified Law Firm, GRITT Freedom Chair, the US Embassy in Kabul, and, perhaps most notably, the Afghan Wheelchair Basketball Team with 400 members from all over Afghanistan. Over the next few years, Rim Power endeavors to create a Wheelchair Heroes comic book series, as well as a corollary comic book based on a character, named Captain Afghanistan - a superhero with different physical challenges, most notably blindness. The Key 2 Freedom: Limitless Possibility Being confined to a wheelchair can present of a myriad of challenges to even the heartiest of individuals; not to Moh. From the confines of his wheelchair he sees a limitless world of possibilities – the possibility of revolutionizing the way people with physical challenges think and feel about themselves; the possibility of an accessible world where every wheelchair user is an integrated member of society and is viewed as empowered or enabled rather than disabled; the possibility of a world where people feel inspired by those in wheelchairs. The Key 2 Freedom: Designed by a User for Users Have a spare $700? If so, you can “trick-out” your wheelchair with baskets, cup holders, canopies, and umbrellas. But be sure that you have full mobility in your upper body because most of the existing attachments require one to attach products in the back of the chair. This is one of several design flaws, along with heaviness, bulk, and presentation, and inaccessible prices, which collectively drove Moh to invent the Key 2 Freedom. The Key 2 Freedom is a small, cylindrical implement consisting of a resin shaft that fastens easily to the arm of the wheelchair. It consists of two magnets, a lock and a Velcro crown, which allows any number of objects to be secured for easy access. The attachments that are included with the Key 2 Freedom package include: a tray for a tablet or other device, a foldable food and beverage tray, a cup holder, a foldable basket, a tripod, and other similarly useful attachments. Today, Moh’s burgeoning enterprise is a registered 501(c) (3) organization. He has received financial, in-kind, and moral support from the Thoracic Foundation, the Watertown Commission on Disability, Easter Seals MA, the Nixon-Peabody 1 Business Prospectus: The Key 2 Freedom Moreover, the Key 2 Freedom boasts the following unique features: • Everything is controlled from the front • It uses no nuts or bolts • The Key and all of the attachments are fully portable • All components are manufactured using a 3-D printer • The Key 2 Freedom and the attachments were designed by a wheelchair user • The price of the Key 2 Freedom and its attachments is $100 Key 2 Freedom’s Core Competencies Although still in its infancy, the Key 2 Freedom, LLC already boasts some strong technical, management and leadership competencies, as illustrated below. With roughly 3 million wheelchair users in the US, and regular growth due to congenital defects, accidents, debilitating diseases, extended life spans, war injuries, and other causes, the market for the Key to Freedom and its package of attachments is ripe for production.
