DOCSIS 3.1 Overview
Key New Technical Features
• Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
– Many small data “subcarriers” combine to create a larger
channel
– Allows fine tuning to adapt to channel conditions: can ‘throttle’ a
few subcarriers instead of entire 6 MHz channel.
– Allows for flexible deployments: can fill small gaps in spectrum
with data-carrying subcarriers as needed
• Forward Error Correction (FEC) based on Low Density
Parity Check (LDPC)
1794 MHz

DOCSIS 3.1 Overview
Flexible and Cost Effective Speed Increase
• Technology can support 10+ Gbps downstream and
1+ Gbps upstream network capacity
• First Generation minimum CM requirements
– Downstream ~4.5 Gbps
– Upstream ~1.8 Gbps
• Capacity on existing 42 MHz split network (assuming
sufficient spectrum is available)
– ~4 Gbps downstream capacity
– ~200 Mbps upstream capacity
Flexibility to Grow Incrementally with Consumer Demand

DOCSIS 3.1 Overview
Facilitate Fluid Migration Strategy
• DOCSIS 3.1 CMs operate on DOCSIS 3.0 CMTSs
– Deploy DOCSIS 3.1 modems on existing CMTS/CCAP,
incrementally activate new PHY capabilities as equipment is
upgraded
• DOCSIS 3.1 CMTSs support DOCSIS 3.0 CMs
– Can continue to use DOCSIS 3.0 modems after DOCSIS
3.1 upgrades
• CMs and CMTSs support bonding
– 24+ downstream SC-QAM channels
– 8 upstream SC-QAM channels
• CMs and CMTSs support bonding between D3.0 and
D3.1 channels

DOCSIS 3.1 Overview
En Resumen
• DOCSIS 3.1 les provee con la oportunidad de
incrementar la capacidad de la red de manera
flexible (etapas) y efectiva (costos).
