Starter: Water stress results from an imbalance
between water use and water resources.
1. What type of map is
this?
2. What does this
show?

too little water?
The water crisis
1. To consider the causes of poor water
supply.
2. To discover how simple technology
might help to solve the crisis
Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain

What do you think this picture is
telling us?
In fact the padlock
is meant to
conserve water.
People in this
village in Kenya
have agreed to take
water from the tap
they share for just a
few hours each day.
The land can be dry
and water is very
precious.
Should people in
Britain be
conserving water
too?
What causes the
water crisis?
Add your notes to your sheet

Pick three photographs and explain how the
photograph explains a cause of poor water
supply.

When you have done this. Read the cue
cards. Did you get the same answer?

Stick the cue card into your book.

The LifeStraw is a personal water filtration device that
enables individuals to drink clean water directly from a
contaminated water source. The small handheld tubing
apparatus was designed by the Swiss company Vestergaard
Frandsen for distribution in developing countries during
times of crisis. 900,000 of the filters were distributed in
Western Kenya in 2011, providing almost one eighth of the
Kenyan population with safe drinking water for three to five
years.
The PlayPump

Hand pumping water is never the most enjoyable activity.
But what if we could combine the action of pumping water
with children having fun? The PlayPump does exactly that.
The people at Roundabout Water Solutions install the merrygo-round style pump at a preexisting borehole. The
community children play by pushing the pump around and
around. As they play, water is drawn up and stored in a tank
nearby. The children get to have fun and exercise and the
area benefits from the supply of water. One of the best
parts? The tanks have enough space for public health
messages and company advertising to help lower the cost of
the installation.
The Life Sack

These “sacks” were originally created by Korean designers
Jung Uk Park, Myeong Hoon Lee, and Dae You Lee to carry
food donated from global aid programs. But, with the
addition of a solar powered water purifier, they can now
transform from a bag to carry food into a bag that makes
local water sources safe to drink. It even has straps so it can
be worn like a backpack to travel from the water location to
the community. The sack works by using UVA radiation and
its own thermal treatment process to kill micro-organisms
and bacteria living in the water.
Chose 1 method of helping to save
overcome the water crisis.
Design a poster / information leaflet for
a campaign to raise money for the idea.
 You will have until the first day lesson
after half term to complete your poster.
 It should take you no more than one
hour.
