Manage Sender Filters on a Mailing List

Manage Sender Filter Options of a Mail List
Much of the information on the Privacy Options area of the Mail List will be set and forget. But occasionally
you may have to make changes.
Most fields have a useful explanation. This guide gives a little more guidance on the more important fields.
1. Login to the admin page of the mail list you wish to edit:
http://list.adelaide.edu.au/mailman/admin//[mailing_list_name]
2. Click on the Privacy Options link, then Sender Filters
As a security precaution members and non-members of lists should not be able to post directly to
the list. The settings should ensure that the moderator gets to see the email first to ensure it is
appropriate to be pushed out to the mailing list. (This reduces the chance of spamming or spoofing of
email accounts)
Follow the directions for each field as set out on the Privacy Options Sender Filter page. Pop outs supply
extra information and business rules.

It is strongly recommended that you do not add any
email addresses to this field. Anyone added to this field
will be able to send email directly to the email list
without moderation. This can lead to spamming of
members by illegal users.
Enter the email address of anyone who
is not a member of the list but who may
need to send emails to this list. The
email will be held for moderation.
Include the moderator and
administrator in this list to prevent
spamming by illegal users.

Use the options to Hold, Reject or

individual email addresses in either of
these fields.
If you selected Reject above, type a
message here. Eg: “Your message has
