Speaking of new members… we want to welcome our
newest Dealer member! National Indoor RV Centers
(20152) is located at 4405 Paxtyon Lane SW, Lilburn, GA
30047. They also have a location in Texas at 498 E State
Hwy 121, Lewisville, TX 75057. If you’re in the area of either
of these locations please stop in, view the Newmar’s on site
and welcome them to the Klub.
If you missed out on one of our 2013 Special Events,
perhaps you can join one in 2014. January starts out
with the Florida Tampa Supershow Rally from the 14-19.
Also in January is the Arizona Quartzsite Gathering in the
Desert from January 15-22; and, as you know you just show
up at the designated location. The Alaska Caravan, June
11-July 24, is now ready for you to sign up for (see ad in
this issue on page 3) and don’t hesitate as this probably
won’t be repeated in 2015. A post-International Caravan in
Michigan is in the making which will soon be finalized and
ready for publication and registration with the December/
January Konnection. Check out the Rhine River Cruise
scheduled for September 12-21, 2014. With a maximum
of 62 rooms this will book quickly; if you are interested
please call Edgerton Travel 574-256-2929 for availability.
At this time we are still in the beginning stages of a Cajun
Caravan for the fall of 2014 or 2015.
HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING
Jim & Wilma Weeks (9233-L), International Directors
Linda Feece, Klub Coordinator
Fall is upon us and what a beautiful time of year. From the RV
windshield you can’t beat checking out the golden aspens in
Colorado to the fall colors in the Ozarks, Smokies and New
England states. Fall festivals are also in abundance, including
Blueberry Festivals, Apple Festivals, October Fests, etc. So
much to do, so little time, but don’t put it off, life is short,
keep those wheels rolling.
We have been working with our IT Department and have
made several changes to our Klub data base. We can now
hold two addresses so if you have a dual summer/winter
address please email us the information with the dates each
is valid and we will automatically make the change.
Another change that many of you have been asking for!
We are in the process of bringing back a Membership
Directory sometime in 2014! This will be available online
only and this section of the website will be password
protected. On page 4 of this issue you will find a form to
be filled out indicating whether you do or do not want
to be included in the directory. Please either email the
information or mail in the form so we can register your
requests.
NKK is pleased with the continued growth of new members
which has averaged 32 per month for the last 5 months. This
is partially due, of course, to the increased number of units
being made. They are now at 30 per week, by late October
will be at 35 per week and have orders into 2014.
Page 6
In the “Calendar of Events” section please take note of
the monthly breakfasts and luncheons planned in Arizona,
Texas and Florida with some beginning in November. We
certainly enjoy these events and want to thank those of you
who organize them, as well as those of you who attend.
Thanks to Jim & Sue Hagedon, we now have a photo
album of our 2013 International Rally. One copy stays in
the NKK office so take a look at it when you are in Nappanee.
The second copy travels with Jim & Wilma Weeks and will
be at the rallies they attend.
We can hardly wait for July, 2014 when we will again
be with our NKK Family in Escanaba from July 14-19
for the 29th International Rally. We spent a few days in
Escanaba with Ron & Wanda Llewellyn to go over parking.
We will be limited to approx. 330 sites for our members.
There’s a lot of buzz out there with this being a new location
many are planning on attending. So don’t hesitate when the
reservations come out in February – get registered early!
Plans are well under way and details will be finalized once we
are settled down in south Texas. There is an antique village
on the fairgrounds which will be open a couple days during
our Rally. Please check the article titled “Antique Gas and
Steam Village” in this issue on page 10.
New for 2014 we plan on having a “sing along” of favorite
hymns before the Sunday Worship Service. Elsewhere in
this issue we are asking for craft instructors to contact us
by November 1 if you are willing to teach a class allowing
us time to get local instructors if necessary. Also, we refer
you to a separate article on “Deck the Halls”. You will have
all winter to come up with a unique lighthouse.
We ask God’s Blessing upon each and every one of you
during this Thanksgiving Season. God has blessed the NKK
staff with so much, including all of you, our friends.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
international members-at-large
>> Jim & Sue Hagedon (12632-L)
The summer travel season has
come and gone, and what a great
one it has been for us! There
were a few bumps along the way
– a leaking fuel injector caused
us to miss the Region 9 Rally in
Alberta – but other than that, we
really enjoyed the opportunity
to attend rallies in Arizona, New
Mexico, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana,
Minnesota, Montana, Oregon,
Washington and California! It’s
been a busy travel season for us,
but we’ve enjoyed every minute of it. The best part, of course,
was having an opportunity to meet and talk with so many of our
fellow Klub members.
As we talk with folks, one of the recurring themes that comes
up is recruiting new Klub members. Actually, if you look at the
number of new members listed in each issue of the Konnection,
we are not doing too bad in this area. We’re doing a pretty good
job of “holding our own” on membership, but if we want to have
more rallies and more active chapters, we are going to have to
do better.
Over the years, we’ve found some pretty successful techniques to
do this, and we’ve talked about many of them before. But, none
of our memories are what they used to be, so we are going to
go back and re-visit a Konnection column we wrote in February
of 2010.
It really boils down to this: the most effective way to get new Klub
members is PERSONAL CONTACT! When you realize that less
than 15% of Newmar owners belong to the Klub, what we have
here is a “target rich environment.” Most of these owners, many
of whom purchased previously owned rigs, know nothing about
the Klub. It is our job to help them understand why they really
want to belong. We have a great example from this past summer.
We were at a campground near Moran Junction in the Tetons. As
luck would have it, we were parked between two other Newmar’s
without Klub numbers showing. Over the course of the day, we
talked with both couples. They had both bought their rigs used,
love their Newmar’s and knew nothing about the Klub.
When they found we were long-time Newmar owners, they had
lots of questions for us about their rigs! Both couples quickly
saw the value of networking with other Newmar owners, the value
of belonging to the Klub, and plan to join. We had to leave the
next morning, but when we pulled out, both couples were talking
(turns out they were both from Texas) and it appeared they were
well on their way to forming a new friendship!
Sound a little like a sales job? Well, it is! Many people, including
us, don’t consider themselves particularly good salespeople, but
what we have found is that if you have a good product and you
really believe in it, making a “sale” can be very rewarding. We’re
sure there are many Klub members who know how to attract
new members far better than we do, but here are a few thoughts,
based on several years of personal experience:
Arm yourselves with a few of the Klub Membership Application trifolds and make sure you familiarize yourself with the information
in them. Your Region, State or local chapter officers should have
a supply of these, or can get them for you.
Perhaps re-stating the obvious, we’ve found campgrounds offer
Page 8
the best recruitment opportunities. If we see a Newmar product
with no NKK numbers on it, we try to make personal contact.
Generally, we don’t knock on doors, but wait for an opportunity
to talk with folks when they are outside of their coach. People
can be put off when someone tries to “sell” them something by
knocking on their door.
Besides, we’d rather talk with someone at eye level rather than
have them looking down at us! Rather than start a conversation
asking if the folks are Klub members, we ask how they like their rig
and then, if the answer is positive, if they know about the Klub. It’s
possible they are already Klub members and don’t have their Klub
numbers on their rig. If they don’t know about the Klub, talk about
the benefits of belonging. Personal experiences really help.
If they know about the Klub but haven’t joined, chances are they
will tell you why. Many times people just need a nudge to get
them to join. Let them know as Klub members, they can attend
rallies without being members of the host region, state or chapter,
and direct them to the web calendar so they can see how easy
it is to find a rally that fits into their schedule.
Of course we always make an effort to talk with people in rigs
with Klub numbers on them. Not only do we like to socialize with
fellow Klub members, we’ve found on a number of occasions that
people have purchased a rig with the numbers from the previous
owners still on their “new” rig.
We’ve found a great place to get new members is at the
campgrounds where Klub rallies are being held. If you are
hosting a rally, invite other Newmar owners in the park to attend
one of the rally socials. This is a case where knocking on doors
is probably a good idea, since this is an invitation to an activity
with free food! If you can get folks to attend a social, chances
are they will be hooked. At the rallies we attended this past year,
the Klub averaged almost one new member per rally!
Every good salesperson has a closer – one or two sentences that
are proven to win over the undecided. Ours came from former
Region 9 Director, Dave Harris, who knows more than a few things
about selling: “Nobody knows your Newmar product better than
another Newmar owner. Chances are you will repay your dues
every year with just one tip from another Klub member.” And our
current offer of the “second year free” for new members really
sweetens the deal.
Ask for the sale. Make sure your prospective new member has
a copy of the application form and direct them to the website.
Encourage them to ask questions. If you are talking with your
prospective member during a business day, offer to dial the Klub
office and let them talk with Linda about starting their membership
application. A bit extreme? We actually saw this happen at a
rally a couple years back!
None of these ideas are rocket science. Do whatever works!
The most important thing here is that we ALL take responsibility
for doing it. We believe bringing in new members is absolutely
critical to the future of the Klub.

>> Tom & Barbara Palmer (19080)
The Fulltimers Chapter
members are scattered
far and wide in their
summer travels, keeping
touch occasionally via our
Yahoo forum. Please keep
our former presidents,
Randall & Vicki Goodner,
in your prayers as they
deal with some health
issues. By the time this issue of the Konnection is distributed, our
A la Carte Rally in Deer Park, WA will be history; we know
of about 6 rigs that will be in attendance, and hope for a
few more to join the fun! We have 11 rigs pre-registered for
our Annual Meeting and Rally in Newberry, MI next July,
and of course hope that we’ll fill our allotment of 20 by the
time registrations are complete next year.
Tom & I have had a full summer of travels; after the
International we stayed in southern Illinois for a Palmer
family reunion, and then traveled through the Rocky
Mountains on I-70, enjoying the cooler mountain
temperatures. Following Barbara’s family reunion in San
Diego, we visited the national parks of California - Sequoia,
Kings Canyon, Yosemite, and Lassen, followed by a few
days at Crater Lake in Oregon. Visits with family in Oregon
and Washington proceeded a few weeks in South Dakota.
By mid-November we’ll be in Florida for the winter, where
we’ll participate in the Florida Manatee’s Chapter rallies.
We’ll hope to see lots of old friends and new at the Tampa
Supershow Rally.

ANTIQUE GAS AND STEAM VILLAGE
Upper Peninsular State Fairgrounds, Escanaba, MI
While attending the 2014 International Rally why not take some time and discover
the Antique Gas and Steam Village. It is located on the Fairgrounds.
In the early 1970s, a small group of individuals were brought together by their mutual
love of old farm machinery. As they worked to restore and maintain various pieces
of equipment, they were gripped by the strong conviction that unless something
was done to preserve these implements, these machines would soon pass out
of existence. The idea of an official organization dedicated to the preservation of
America’s agricultural heritage began to crystallize.
In 1975, the fledgling group held an agricultural exposition over Labor Day weekend. Not only did they want to display their equipment, they hoped to create community
interest and hopefully acquire new members.
In 1976, the U.P. Steam and Gas Association was officially incorporated as a nonprofit group dedicated to the preservation, restoration and exhibition of early steam
engines, gasoline engines, tractors, farm machinery and other items of historic
interest. From the very beginning, the Association envisioned building an Agricultural
museum, a permanent facility that would house an eclectic cross-section of farming
equipment. In 1986 that vision became a reality. Today, the Museum houses an eclectic collection of antique
equipment and artifacts. We believe that these items are as much
a part of America’s history as the hardy men and women who used
them in forging this great nation.
To further the goal of preserving America’s heritage and presenting
it to current generations, the Association, with the support of the
U.P. State Fair Authority, developed Antique Village. What started
as a single building has grown into almost two acres of exhibits
and shops.
As part of its ongoing resolve to preserve our American heritage,
the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association, with the support of
the U.P. State Fair Authority, has developed Antique Village. Evoking the feel of a by-gone era, Antique Village offers visitors
an interactive learning experience. Local artisans demonstrate
traditional handicrafts such as glass blowing, knitting, spinning,
weaving, quilting, pottery and woodcarving. Many of these goods
are available to purchase. The Village also features a blacksmith shop, granary, barber shop,
general store, cook shack and ice cream parlor. Exhibits include a steam-powered saw mill, railroad depot,
schoolhouse and an 80-ton Fairbanks diesel engine.
In all there are almost two full acres of shops and displays.
The U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association remains committed
to our basic mandate: preserving our past heritage for current and
future generations.

DECK THE HALLS
CENTERPIECES FOR ESCANABA
When you think of Michigan you think of water, water
falls, lighthouses and fudge and they have lots of all of
it.
At our 2013 International we asked each State/Province
to bring a centerpiece representing their area. Thanks to
those of you who participated, the dining room looked
great. Since it was such a successful endeavor we would
like to continue having table decorations.
For 2014 we would like to encourage each Chapter to
bring a lighthouse for a table centerpiece. Please use your
imagination and creativity, only rule is that it should have
something representing a light at the top. In determining
the size, just keep in mind that it will be used as a table
centerpiece. They can be made out of anything, all the
way from corn cobs to paper, or whatever. There will be
no prizes, however, the top 5 will be recognized following
dinner on Friday, based on creativity.
We are mentioning this early to allow time for each
Chapter to start creating a lighthouse. We would certainly
appreciate your assistance in decorating the dining room
with lighthouses in Escanaba.

REGION 1 // AZ, CA, CO, NM, NV, UT
Region Directors :: Marty & Marion Marcum (17221)
By the time you have this
issue of the Konnection
in hand the rally season in
the southwest will be in full
swing. We just attended the
Chili Pepper’s Chapter rally in
Creede, CO and had a great
time. We were all treated to a
great performance of “Taming
of the Shrew” by Creede’s Repertory Theater.
There are still 5 rallies in the Region 1 area scheduled
before the end of the year. October is jam packed with
rallies with a rally every week. Nevada Mother Lode in
Minden, NV; Region 1/Nevada State combined rally in
Sparks, NV; Golden Bears in Red Bluff, CA; and finally
49er’s in Hanford, CA. In December the Arizona State
Rally is being held in Tucson, AZ. Check this issue of
the Konnection or online in the Region 1 calendar section
for the specifics of each rally. We hope that you will plan
to attend some or all of these great rallies.
There are already 2 rallies planned for the beginning of
2014 in addition to Quartzsite’s “The Gathering in the
Desert” in January. Information for these rallies is also
posted online as well as in this issue of the Konnection.
There will be breakfasts and luncheons in Arizona
around the state during the winter months. Details
can be found in the “Calendar of Events” here in the
Konnection and on the Region 1 Rally Calendar on the
NKK website. If you are planning a winter breakfast
or luncheon anywhere in Region 1 this winter, please
send us the information ([email protected])
and we’ll include it in the Region 1 Rally Calendar on
the NKK website.
As we all know, the Konnection is the “meat and
potatoes” of our Klub; and, we also know, it cannot be
printed, or on the web, without subscribers and it only $15
a year. The Konnection is published every 2 months and
we really encourage you to subscribe if you have not yet
done so. It is full of great articles from all of the regions,
states and chapters and there isn’t a better way to find out
what is going on everywhere from rallies to recipes and
everything in between.
The 2014 International Rally will be held in Escanaba,
Michigan from July 14-19 and is expected to be well
attended. Because this is a new location with limited sites
it is expected to fill up quickly so as soon as signups are
opened in early 2014 we suggest that you get your check
Page 11
and disclaimer in the mail so you can secure your place or
register on line. After the International we encourage you
to take advantage of all of the sightseeing opportunities
afforded by the Great Lakes region.
We look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming rallies
this year or somewhere down the road in 2014. We can be
reached by cell phone 562-762-8853 or martynmarion@

ARIZONA
I hope you all Arizona snowbirds and residents are looking
forward to this winter as much as we are. We are especially
looking forward to hosting our first NKK Arizona State
Rally and are hoping to have good attendance. We and

We are currently making our way from Alaska back to
Tucson and plan to attend the two Nevada and two
California NKK rallies on our way down from the north.
We are sure we will see many Newmar family members
we have rallied with before and meet many new Newmar
owners at these rallies.
If you can be in the Quartzsite neighborhood in
January please come camp with us at the “Gathering
in the Desert” that Ruth Ann & I are hosting from
January 15-22, 2014. Look at this link for complete

When you all get back out here in Arizona or if you are
just passing through this winter don’t forget to check
the NKK calendar for breakfasts or luncheons held in
Casa Grande, Gold Canyon, Yuma and Tucson monthly
this winter and let me thank the hosts of these events for
their dedication.

ARIZONA SUN CATCHERS
Greetings to all the Newmar Kountry Klub members! We
departed Phoenix, AZ at the end of May to escape the heat.
As some of you know, we went to the Newmar International
Rally in DuQuoin, IL and then on the Country to Castle
Caravan. Our next stop was the Spartan Owners School
in Charlotte, MI.
During our travels, we made several new friends (some
Newmar, some other brand) and mentioned to them
the combined NJ/Region 7 Rally in Hershey, PA which
we were planning to attend in mid-September. We invited
them to join us, which they did, and they too enjoyed
making more RV friends. The NKK rallies are a great way
to help plan your travel schedule and make new and
lasting friends. We seldom start a trip without checking
the NKK site for rallies along our route. Our travels are
now heading back to the Phoenix area. I should mention
that with the weather we had in the northeast this summer,
I’m not sure we escaped much of the heat but we toured
a great deal of the area and enjoyed seeing more of this
wonderful land. Please travel safely to your winter homes
and enjoy the upcoming holiday seasons.

CALIFORNIA GOLDEN AIRES
California Golden Aires members are working on their
January 3-7 rally at Indian Waters RV Resort. This
beautiful RV Park is across the street from the Indio Date
Festival Fairgrounds where the FMCA Western RV Rally
will be held from January 8-12. We have 25 sites reserved
and NKK members could add a day to the rally and then
drive across the street to the FMCA rally starting on the
8th. There are many Palm Spring winter activities which
will be available to Golden Aires rally attendees. Final
details will be available in early October and December
1st will be deadline to sign up. For additional information

CALIFORNIA 49ER’S
Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s the end of August and time
to write the October Newmar Kountry Klub article for the
49ers. When it’s 102 outside the thought of fall sounds
so welcoming!
Hope everyone has had a good summer and safe travels.
Fall brings the opportunity for many of us to get together
at one or more of the scheduled Newmar Kountry Klub
rallies. It’s a time to share our summer travels and catch
up with one another. There’s always plenty to do and
lots to eat at these events. We hope to see you at our
rally in Hanford, October 21-25th or at one of the other
scheduled NKK rallies this fall. Be sure to check out
the Newmar Konnection Calendar for dates and more
information.
If you would e-mail us your favorite campground or a
favorite place to travel or even a favorite restaurant, we
can use the information for future rally planning. We’ve
used tips we’ve received and passed them on to others.
Email your suggestions to [email protected].
We are currently working with the Fishers on preliminary
planning for a combined California State/49ers Rally
April 21-25, 2014 in Paso Robles.

CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS
We had a great summer and hope everyone in the Newmar
family did also.
It’s rally time in the West! We are looking forward to cohosting the California State/Golden Bears Rally October
15-19 at the Durango RV Resort in Red Bluff, CA. Many
exciting things are planned. In fact, so many, that golf will
be on Tuesday morning the 15th, which will require early
arrival. A special surprise is in store for the ladies at 3 pm
on check-in day (15th). Each day we will be exploring
different areas: A walnut producing plant, a winery that is
also an Abbey, an olive oil producing plant, Lassen National
Park and the town of Red Bluff including a poker run in the
Historical Victorian section.
We also plan on attending the two early October rallies
in Nevada and then the 49ers rally in Hanford later in
October.
Looking forward to seeing our Newmar friends and meeting
new ones at these rallies.

NEW MEXICO CHILE PEPPERS
If you did not attend the rally in Creede hosted by Tom &
Karen Thompson, you missed a great time. They had a
fantastic rally, as usual. It was the last rally for our chapter
this year and we are already gearing up for 2014. We are
still looking for volunteers to run for Presidents of the
Chile Peppers. Send us an email if you would like to
volunteer – the club needs you to continue the great times
we have had in the past.
We look forward to seeing more of you in 2014.

MOTHER LODE
I think that as each of you read the articles in this month’s
Konnection, we all wonder “just where did the summer
go”? We were blessed with spending part of our summer
with Klub friends and family. Of course, many of us believe
that Klub friends and family are the same. We want to
thank the Newmar Corporation for their support of the
Kountry Klub. Our travels included a stop in Nappanee.
We were able to see first-hand just how much work Linda
Feece does for us and the endless hours that Jim & Wilma
Weeks spend so that we are members of the best RV
social club industry. A big Thank You to Marty & Marion
Marcum for accepting the interim Region 1 Directors
job when Gary Beeler was unable to continue. It gives
us great pleasure to report that both Gary & Tammy
Page 13
Beeler are doing very well and we look forward to
seeing them at future Newmar events.
We are now shifting to our winter mode, meaning spending
time following local sporting events and getting our
grandkids to believe we are their real grandparents. It is
hard for us to park our RV, but now that just like our summer
passed so quickly, the winter season will too.
To say we are excited about attending our 2014
International Rally in Escanaba, MI would be an
understatement. Our travels allowed spending one
night at the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds. We
believe all of us that attend the 2014 International will
have a wonderful time, not only at the Rally, but touring
some of the most beautiful areas of the USA.
Another Thank You before we end this article. We thank
the members of the Nevada Mother Lode Chapter for
allowing us to represent you.
Wishing you smooth roads and following winds,

2014 ALASKA CARAVAN
STOP AND SMELL THE “ARCTIC” ROSES
Have you ever dreamed of taking your RV as far north as you can drive in the United States? Have
you ever listened to people who have traveled to Alaska and promised yourself “Some Day!”. If you
have, it’s time to start making plans. The NKK 2014 Alaska/Yukon Caravan promises you a lifetime
adventure that you will never forget and at a pace you will love.
More than a simple snapshot, this tour is a feast for the senses. Delve deep into Alaska’s back country
and temporarily succumb to the feelings of awe that will overwhelm you. This caravan adventure
features it all. Soak up the beauty of the USA’s frontier state, a wilderness playground that abounds
with towering glaciers, emerald green forests and unique wildlife as well as massive national parks
and modern cities, gold rush towns and remote highways. The 2014 Newmar Caravan is a great way
to experience a slice of life in America’s most remote state.
The caravan forms in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on June 11. Our trip will take us about 3,300 miles
through some of the most beautiful country in all of America. Along the way, we will enjoy many group
bus and boat tours. Join us as we travel through the Matanuska Valley--Playland of Alaska. Say “so long” to
the real world and embrace the beauty of Kenai Fjords National Park and Prince William Sound--teaming with
whales, otters and sea birds—where pristine landscapes will take your breath away as magnificent glaciers
calve icebergs into the ocean. We will ride a swift catamaran to Juneau, Alaska’s landlocked capital city.
We will enjoy meals, live entertainment shows and local speakers. We will learn about early explorers and
settlers, early modes of transportation, post our signs at the famous Watson Lake Signpost Forest, and enjoy
a breathtaking train ride. We will learn about the great auroras that are mostly visible during Alaska’s long
winter nights. And finally--near the end of our trip—we will visit Denali National Park where we will admire
Mt. McKinley on the horizon as we get off the beaten track in this beautiful part of the world. We will share
many laughs at impromptu evening socials, visit first class museums, a sea life center and lots more. Our
adventure ends 44 days after it began. On our last day together in Fairbanks, we will ride a riverboat on the
Chena and Tanana Rivers where we will watch a bush plane takeoff, learn about the Iditarod Dog Sled Race,
visit a fish camp, learn even more about the Athabascan culture, and attend an Alaskan Salmon Bake.
Traveling to and from campgrounds has been well thought out and is never farther than one can
comfortably drive in a day. Campground reservations have already been arranged. Final touches are
being made for reservations for tours, rides, shows, meals, and museums. This is your opportunity
to take the adventure you always dreamed of. Sign up now so that you can “stop and smell the arctic
roses” with us.

REGION 2 // AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY
Region Directors :: Mike & Carol Lowery (10354-L)
What a great rally season
this has been in Region
2. We’ve been to the hot
desert in Prosser, WA;
t h e m a g n i f i c e n t We s t
Yellowstone, in MT; and to
quaint Sisters, OR. Thank
you to all the officers and
volunteers who step up to
make these events happen
and enjoyable. We enjoyed
meeting some new members this season, and during
the rally, they learned the fix for a few minor mechanical
problems while networking with the gentlemen attendees.
Course us gals always pick up yummy new recipes.
We wish to announce our new Washington State
Directors, Jim & Cheryl Witherspoon (10282). We have
known them for many years and look forward to working
with them in the future. They bring a wealth of experience
to this position and will do an outstanding job.
At year-end, Warren & Anne Weaver (10889) will be
retiring as the Montana State Directors. They have held
this position for 6-1/2 years. They will be greatly missed
by us and all of the Montana members. THANKS AGAIN
Warren & Anne! If anyone is interested in applying for
this position, please contact us.
We will be the Tailgunners with Larry & Patsy Wood as
Wagonmasters. After looking at a CD Marilyn Rogero put
together from the 2011 Alaskan Caravan, the views look
breathtaking! It feels like we’ll be going to a “foreign”
land, and how nice it is to have all the arrangements made
for us!!
We wish you all a fun Halloween, the blessings of
Thanksgiving, and safe travels.
God Bless you and yours.
IDAHO
We have had a very busy rally travel season thus far in 2013.
While traveling home from Yuma through California, we
attended two non-Newmar rallies in April. The first was in
Palm Desert at Emerald Desert RV Park and then a rally at
49er Village in Plymouth. It was interesting to see firsthand
how other organizations conduct rallies. At the end of May
we began traveling to the NKK International in DuQuoin, IL.
If you have not attended an International rally in the past,
plan to attend next year’s rally in Escanaba, MI. Our July
travels took us to the Region 2 rally in Prosser, WA, and in
September the Oregon State rally in Sisters. All these rallies
provided us the opportunity to meet new RV’ers, catch up
with old friends, visit new places, and eat too much!
Region Directors
Needed for Region 2
We are seeking a couple or individual to take on this challenging position.
The new Director(s) will be appointed effective upon selection for a term of
3 years with a possible 1 year extension.
We’d like to thank Guaranty RV Super Center for their
generous support of our Region’s rallies this season.
If you’re in Junction City, Oregon, and in need of anything
– stop by to see them.
If you are interested in this position you must be a resident of any of the States
in Region 2 (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, or Wyoming) and
own a Newmar unit. You must be able to lead, possess good communications
skills, be self-motivated, be a flexible team player, and like to meet a lot of
wonderful people from all walks of life.
The International Rally in DuQuoin, IL, this year was busy
since our responsibility took place in the dining room. We
really appreciated all the help by the volunteers for Food
Services. We could not have done it without HELP.
This position offers many challenges. You will be responsible for organizing
and hosting the annual Regional Rally and for interacting with Newmar Dealers in your region. You will work directly with the State Directors, Chapters, and
all members in the region. You will also work with the International Directors
and the Klub office staff.
The word is out that this is our last year as Region
Directors. What a positive 6 years this has been. It’s
all about the PEOPLE. This Klub is like a second family
to us, and we’ve made some great, life-long friends.
Whoever takes our place, and the job is open to anyone,
will enjoy working with Jim & Wilma Weeks, and the great
camaraderie of the other Region Directors. If you have
any questions about our position, don’t hesitate to give
us a call.
Benefits: You will be reimbursed for your international Rally Fee and expenses
incurred within the region including travel expenses. Free Klub membership
while in office. Rebate on your choice of Newmar RV. New name badge with
title and display sign for your RV. Special recognition at all Newmar Kountry
Klub functions you attend.
So next year will be another Newmar adventure for
us. Come join us on the Alaska Caravan in June/July.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
We were home for almost 3 weeks before we co-hosted
the Idaho State/Spudnut/ Montana State/Big Sky joint
rally with the Garrett’s, the Weaver’s, and the Lewis’s in
beautiful West Yellowstone, Montana, at the Grizzly RV
Park. We were fortunate to experience beautiful weather
and no smoke from forest fires for the 14 rigs attending.
A smaller rally enabled us to spend more quality time with
all. Our rally attracted visits from several other Newmar
owners not attending the rally. Maybe we will see them at
future NKK rallies.
It’s been a very busy year for rallies and we hope everyone
attending Newmar rallies has had as much fun and
companionship as we have. Now it’s time to plan to travel
south to Yuma for the winter and remember the great times
we had attending rallies.
We plan to attend the Newmar Quartzsite Gathering
in the Desert in January of 2014. If you find yourself
in the southeast area of Arizona this winter, plan to
attend both the Gathering in Quartzsite and the monthly
Newmar owner’s luncheon held the first Tuesday of the
month from November through March in Yuma at Mi
Fajita Mexican Restaurant. It’s a great way to meet new
NKK members and to keep in touch with members you
already know. Check the calendar in the Konnection or
on the web for more details.
Travel safely,

Idaho State Directors
MONTANA
Another rally has come and gone for the Big Sky Kountry
Klub. We had a joint rally with the Idaho Spudnuts August
20-23. Since both chapters are relatively small, this worked
out very well for both. We had the rally at West Yellowstone,
MT. This is a nice area with lots to see and do. There were
14 rigs in attendance which makes for a good size so that
everyone can get better acquainted
We had a thank you party, with Baskin Robbins ice
cream cake, cards and gifts, for Mike & Carol Lowery.
They have been Regional Directors for six years and are
retiring from their job. They have been super directors
and will be a hard act to follow for the next directors. A
great big thank you to Mike & Carol.
Warren & I have decided to resign our role as State
Directors effective the end of the year. We have been
directors for 6-1/2 years and have enjoyed it and are
hoping someone will step up and volunteer to take the
job. Our travels with the Newmar family have been a lot of
fun. Without friends and family, you haven’t got much and
some of our dearest friends have come from our Newmar
travels. You meet so many wonderful people everywhere
Page 16
you go and we will continue to keep going as long as we
are able.

OREGON
Summer has certainly rushed by us this year. Seems the
years fly faster and faster as we get older. When we were
young, we couldn’t wait for that next birthday; now we are
trying to find the “Whoa Down” button. By the time you
read this, the Oregon State/Pioneer Chapter Rally will be
in the books. We had 13 rigs in attendance this year in
Sisters, OR. Thank you all for coming to the rally and for
all the wonderful volunteer help that we received. It’s the
volunteers that make the rallies so much fun, all the folks
getting together and helping out.
Our rally was the last official rally as Region 2 Directors
for Mike & Carol Lowery. Marie & I would like to again
thank Mike & Carol for all their help and tutelage over
the last 5-6 years, it certainly made our job much
easier. We wish them safe travels where ever the roads
may lead.
It will soon be time for us to put the coach to bed for another
winter but we won’t be totally idle. We have several very
interesting and beautiful Oregon Sites to look at for next
year’s rally. We have even discussed a joint Rally with
Washington, who knows. So until we meet along the road,
have a wonderful and blessed Holiday Season and save
time to visit with us next year.
Safe travels,
Ross and Marie Turney (15097)

WASHINGTON
We are Jim & Cheryl Witherspoon, the new Washington
State Directors. We joined the NKK in 1999 after
purchasing a new Dutch Star. In 2000, Jim retired and we
went fulltiming for 4 years.
We are looking forward to serving the membership in
Washington State. We are in the process of looking
for a location for next year’s rally. If any of you have
a suggestion, please e-mail us at: jswspoon@gmail.
com.
The Rally in Prosser this summer was very successful,
except for the heat. We hope you all have a great winter
and we will see you down the road.

REGION 3 // AR, KS, LA, MO, OK, TX
Region Directors :: Larry & Katie Harrington
(17407-L)
If you like hot dry summers,
you should have spent
time in south Texas in July
and August. We have not
traveled since we arrived
home from the International
rally in late July. We should
have stayed a couple more
months in northern Indiana
and Michigan!
As this is written we are gearing up for several events in the
next three months. First we will go to the Missouri State
Rally in Columbia from September 18-22. It sounds like it
will be a great time and we will let you know in the next
Konnection article.
We will only be home a week before we go to Santo to put on
the Region 3 Rally. We are working out the last few details.
We do have our entertainment set to go and the menus
are arranged. So far we are having a great response and
looking for a good turnout. We will have more information
about the results in the December Konnection.
We are going to host the Christmas in Branson Rally, so
we are also getting ready to meet the others going with
us. We are looking forward to a great time with our fellow
Kountry Klub members and a couple of other brands are
joining us. The dates for the Branson trip are November
4-10. This special event has been sold out but Linda
is making a standby list so if you are interested please
call her at the Klub office.
We also plan to attend the Louisiana Bayou Kruisers
Chapter rally from November 21-23 at Poche’s Fish
and Park, Breaux Bridge, LA. This group always has
good food and lots of fun. Also, HINT, HINT, HINT we
are still in need of couple to be the State Directors for
Louisiana. If you are interested please give Katie or
myself a call.
If you are looking for a great trip consider taking the
2014 Alaska/Yukon Caravan. Former Region 3 Directors
Larry & Patsy Wood will be leading the group and Region
2 Directors, Mike & Carol Lowery, will be the tail gunners.
This group will have a fun time and there will be lots to see
and do. The dates are June 11-July 24. Katie & I have
made this trip and it is a blast. The Halibut fishing isn’t bad
either (if the ocean isn’t too rough).
Well that’s about it for now. Always be safe and have fun.
Remember to always be happy because you deserve it.

ARKANSAS
HOT and dry, but not as hot or nearly as dry as last year,
pretty well describes our summer in Arkansas. Perhaps our
members who were on the road had a bit more comfortable
weather. Another reason to RV!
It has been quiet in the Razorback Kountry Klub during
the second half of summer 2013. As our activities pick up
for the fall we expect most RKKers will attend our chapter
rally in Mountain View. By the time you are reading this
we should be filled with good Arkansas folk music, lots of
folk history, good food and great fall scenery from the hills
and mountains of the Arkansas Ozarks. Our Region 3 Rally
with some good Texas fun, food and fellowship will be in
the books, too. Hope you were with us.
We are looking forward to both of these cool rallies and
to some cooler weather. Thanks in advance to James &
Ruth Ann Hairston and their helpers for our Chapter Rally
and to Larry & Katie Harrington and their helpers for the
Region 3 Rally.
While we are issuing thanks, a HUGE thank you to
the Kountry Klub Board of Directors for expanding
the Klub’s rally guest policy. We hope to have better
attendance numbers at our local rallies here in Arkansas
and to sell a few Newmar units along the way. How can
our guests see the fun and fellowship at our rallies and the
quality and comforts of our Newmar RVs and not join our
ranks? Great work Board, thanks again!
Looking forward into 2014, we are hoping our Arkansas
State Rally can be held in northwest Arkansas, where
there are lots of things to do including the Crystal
Bridges Museum of American Art, Razorback and
Arkansas naturals baseball, etc, etc., etc. Late April or
early May will be our target dates, so we can enjoy the
greens of spring in the Boston Mountains. We are looking
for a suitable park, if you know of one, please let us know.
Mark your calendar and plan to be with us.

KANSAS
It’s the middle of August, and Sherry & I are leaving in a
few days to attend the Heartlander/Sunflower joint chapter
rally in Seneca, KS, and then to Lake City, CO for a few
days to visit my sister and brother-in-law. The month will
be over before we get back home, so I decided to write
our Konnection article now so I won’t worry about it while
we are on the road.
Until the end of June eastern Kansas was in a severe
drought, but not anymore. During July and the first half
of August we have received over 13 inches of rain. Water
restrictions have been lifted and the lakes and ponds
are all full. We are so thankful for the rain and none of
the storms have put a damper (no pun intended) on our
Kansas rallies.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
July 18-21 Steve & Blanche Smith hosted a Sunflower
Chapter rally at the Triple J RV Park in Russell, KS, and July
25-28 Jim & Vickie Sturgeon hosted a Kansas Heartlander
Rally at Lake Perry which is about 17 miles northeast of
Topeka, KS. Sherry & I attended both of these rallies and
enjoyed very much spending time with our Klub friends.
Thank you very much to the couples mentioned above for
hosting the July rallies.
Group photo taken at the August Kansas Kountry
Sunflowers/Kansas Heartlanders joint rally at Seneca,
KS. Flat Matt made a dual appearance.
I want to welcome new members, Brad & Alice Elkins,
to the Klub. They have been RV’ers for several years and
just recently purchased a Mountain Aire motor home. They
attended the Heartlander Rally at Lake Perry, and I don’t
think we scared them away, because they are planning
to attend the joint chapter rally August 22-25 at Seneca,
KS.
Several of our Kansas chapter members continue to
struggle with serious health problems, and we want each
one of them to know that our thoughts and prayers are with
them as they go through difficult times.
Sherry & I are saddened to report the news from Sunflower
member Marvin Farr that his wife, Lottie, has died after a
battle with pneumonia. We are very sorry to receive this
news, but will remember Lottie as an enjoyable person to
visit with and also the fact that she truly enjoyed telling a
good joke.
Hope to see you soon at a Klub event,

MISSOURI
Summer is coming to an end, and we hope it has been a
good one for all of you. We have attended several rallies
this summer, and have had a great time. We even took
Matt Miller along with us to Leavenworth, KS, and had a
great time with him.
We just returned from a joint rally of the Mid-MO Show Me
and Wanderlust Chapters at Nevada, MO. A tour of the WF
Norman Plant, the only plant in the U.S. that produces hand
pressed tin ceilings. It features the same hand presses that
were used when the company was founded in 1898.
Page 18
As we write this article, we are busy wrapping up all the
details for the Missouri State Rally which will be held at
Cottonwoods RV Resort in Columbia, MO September
18-22. It is a small turnout this year, but everyone seems
to be very busy. We have a fun time planned, and hope
everyone has a great time.
Mid-Mo Show Me Chapter has a big rally planned in
October in Carthage, MO at Coachlight RV Resort
for the Maple Leaf Festival, and the Wanderlust has a
rally planned for October in Guthrie, OK at the Cedar
Valley RV Resort. Both chapters have some great things
planned, and we are looking forward to those two rallies.
Our Missouri rally season is soon coming to a close, and
people will be heading either south or west for the winter
months. We hope you each have great plans for the
remainder of this year.

OKLAHOMA
Hello to all our Newmar friends. As you know, Oklahoma
has one chapter, Okie Kountry Klub, and it has been
somewhat inactive. On August 3 we had a chapter luncheon
at Cracker Barrel in Owasso. We had 18 in attendance and
enjoyed catching up on all the news. Here is a little info on
some of our members in no particular order.
Gary & Fran Evans had just gotten their motorhome back
after a couple of months in the shop, and Gary can’t wait
to camp. Don & Mary Ann Stanton have been clearing
their home of antiques. Everything is at the auction house,
although some things will be replaced. Cecil Snider is going
strong. He had attended rallies in Kansas and Missouri,
and spent extended time in Branson. He said he is through
doing tax returns, so he can RV anytime of the year. Bob
& Linda Driscoll had been to Branson, and said they were
ready to go again. Vernon & Charlotte Woolman had not
been RVing--just golfing and sewing. Leroy & Hazel Wheeler
had spent a lot of time in doctors’ offices. Leroy had an
MRI recently, and the doctors were not very encouraging.
He needs prayer for his back and other issues. Larry &
Patsy Wood have been busy planning the Alaska Caravan
for 2014. Sounds like a great trip; watch the Konnection
for details. Also Larry is recovering from back surgery. Don
& Pat Bard enjoyed a Cajun rally in Louisiana with Fred
Walton. This was not a Newmar-only rally, but sounded
like the normal Fred Walton great time with plenty of Cajun
food. They were planning a trip to Ruidosa. Debbie & I have
been making lots of changes. Debbie is no longer working,
but I am temporarily writing curriculum for Oklahoma State
University Technical Institute. We both hope to be loose
soon in order to travel the country helping to build or repair
churches. We have had our motorhome out only one time
since October 2012.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
Our next rally will be October 10 in Tulsa. Lowell & Nancy
Cooper from Mutual, OK, are coming to Tulsa for Nancy’s
high school reunion, and they plan to join the rally. We are
looking forward to a great time.
We will write again after the October rally with plans for
more rallies.

TEXAS
Where has our summer gone? It seems like just a few days
ago we were enjoying Illinois weather at the International
Rally. For those of you who were not able to attend, it was
a GREAT time, but there was one very special event. It was
a touching moment when, in the early dark hours of the
last night of the rally, we heard emergency sirens blaring,
saw EMS lights flashing and car horns were honking. The
first thought and fear was that someone was gravely hurt,
but as the line of emergency vehicles wound their way
through the park and past our rigs, we realized it wasn’t
an emergency at all, but the DuQuoin police officers,
firefighters, EMS personnel and even local residents in
cars winding their way through the park in a gesture of
appreciation for our support of their city that had been
so hard hit by the economic turn down. Not only did our
presence contribute financially with the shopping at their
stores and eating out at their restaurants, but we also
donated $2,134 and 11 large boxes of food for the food
pantry and books from the book exchange were donated
to the local library. It felt so good to be making a difference
and to have our contributions acknowledged with such an
emphatic gesture of appreciation.
It’s certainly true, time, unlike pigs, does seem to fly. We
have made new friends embarking on their RV dreams
and sadly some old friends who have decided to set their
RV journeys aside. Wherever we travel another “truth”
we encounter is the volunteer spirit of our RV community.
Some folks sign up for an hour or two, others for a twoyear term as a chapter officer. Like any volunteer based
group we depend on and appreciate this willingness to
pitch in and help. A great big Texas Thank You to all of
you who make our Newmar Kountry Klub one of the best
in the industry.
Our Texas fall rally schedule is filled with opportunities
to continue, renew, or create some great memories
and friendships. If you have never been to a rally please
know you will be welcomed as old friends. We hope you
will join us at one or several of these gatherings. October

REGION 4 // IA, IL, MN, ND, NE, SD, WI
Region Directors :: Everett & Julie Israel (10622-L)
Hello Everyone. Where has
the summer gone? It seems
like only yesterday that rally
season had just begun and
now it’s winding down.
In July we attended the Illinois
State Rally in Springfield.
Again Jim & Carol Chaney
planned a great rally for
us. We came away having
learned more about our capital and the Lincoln family than
we knew before. One evening we took a ghost walk and
learned many secrets about the Lincoln family including his
twelve funeral services. They took place as his body was
transported along the way from Washington to Springfield.
The services not only honored him, but also convinced the
public that he had indeed passed away. Thanks to Jim &
Carol for their detailed planning. Great fun!
Our new travel companion, Flat Matt, was with us as we
traveled to Preston, MN for the Minnesota State Rally. We
thank Ray & Joyce Korsten, Minnesota State Directors, for
a wonderful, fun filled rally. They took us on mini busses
out into Amish country to visit the cottage industries that
dot the area. Another day we had the opportunity to have
a personal tour by Stanley “Slim” Maroushek of his wood
carving collection. It is the largest single collection of
carvings in the United States and has over 4,000 pieces.
Thank you also to Vic & Mary Spaulding, members of the
Minnesota Loons, for hosting us on Saturday at their cabin.
What a peaceful and beautiful place to relax!
Ray & Joyce will be stepping down as Minnesota State
Directors at the end of this year. We want to thank
them for their hard work and dedication, not only as
State Directors, but also for their contribution to the
Minnesota Loons.
We are happy to announce that Pete & Joan Neururer
have been appointed as the new Minnesota State
Directors effective January 1, 2014. Everett & I look
forward to working with them.
Everett, Flat Matt, & I left Preston and drove to Garfield,
MN to plan our 2014 Region 4 Rally. It will be held
September 3-7 in conjunction with the 2014 Steinbring
Quartzsite North Rally September 5-7. The full rally will
be held in Alexandria and Garfield. Attendees will have
their choice of (1) coming early Wednesday, September 3,
and staying at a campground in Alexandria with 50 amp
full hookups for four nights or (2) dry camping two nights at
Page 20
Steinbring in Garfield. Attendees who stay for the full rally,
September 3-7, will register as Region 4 attendees and
those staying at Steinbring will register with Steinbring’s.
Flat Matt’s twin brother (a second Flat Matt) joined us in
Garfield and became our official greeter in the front window
of our coach while the first Flat Matt went on side trips
to explore the area. Look for his adventures on www.
gonewmar.com.
We left Alexandria and headed to South Dakota for the
South Dakota/North Dakota State Rally. Del & Lela
Nordstrom, South/North Dakota State Directors, hosted
us for a great rally. The highlights were visiting the 1800’s
Town and the Pioneer Auto Museum. Flat Matt found a
1921 motor home at the Auto Museum and insisted we
take his picture. Look for his picture online.
Then it was home for a week before heading to Effingham,
IL for the Kountry Kuzzins Fall Rally hosted by Joe & Donna
Delaney. They had planned a lot for us to do including lunch
in Moonshine (population 2)! Neat experience!
We headed north from there to Rock Cut State Park for the
last rally of the season for the Kountry Kampers. Thanks
to Don & Sandy Ozburn and Ralph & Carol Hoekstra for
hosting us. Again we saw places we had never seen before!
Big thanks to our hosts; it was fun to be together.
We are pleased to announce that starting January 1,
2014 Joe & Donna Delaney will become our new Illinois
State Directors. We can’t thank Jim & Carol Chaney
enough for the outstanding job they have done as
Illinois State Directors.
Wherever your travels take you, may they be safe and
happy. Keep in touch. Until the next time!
ILLINOIS
Greetings from Illinois! Where did the summer go? It seems
like we just started our rally season! It’s been a great
season for us, reconnecting with so many of you, as well
as meeting new friends!
Our Illinois State Rally was a great success, although we
could have used some cooler weather! It was good that
all of our daytime tours were in air conditioning. We knew
our rally would be very busy, having seven tours in three
days. Then our attendees wanted to add three more tours.
Wow, and all in three days! I think it is safe to say we all
know so much more about the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln,
Mary Todd Lincoln, Bootlegging, and Springfield. We highly
recommend that everyone visit our Illinois State Capitol.
You won’t be disappointed!
At the time of this writing our IKK Fall Rally in Effingham,
IL and our NIKK Fall Rally in Loves Park (near Rockford),
IL are upon us. Both chapters have some wonderful tours
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
and gatherings planned. We are sure they will each be a
great success.
Now is the time that many of you start thinking of traveling
south for the winter. We pray that you have a great winter
and safe travels as you go.
Please feel free to contact us anytime. Jim @ 217-8412561 [email protected] or Carol @ 217-489-9063

IOWA
Well, by the time this Konnection magazine comes out, we’ll
be through with rallies and packing for Texas.
We had a big State Rally in September. It was exciting to
have 12 motor homes, with a new couple joining us. We
had a tour of Kalona, IA; it’s an Amish community. We also
toured several businesses and had a meal in a Mennonite
home. We added an extra day to the rally since there were
so many things to see and do in Kalona.
We hope everyone had a wonderful rally season and next
year, we will all come back from our winter season and
ready for new ventures in 2014.
Stay well and drive safely everyone.

MINNESOTA
The reunion dinner held July 10 at the Knights of Columbus
Hall had 28 members. There were 5 past State Directors
with our longest Loon members, Harry & Bernice Mullen.
We are all moving a little slower, but still moving. This year
Bob & Edna Peterson could not attend due to health issues.
Keep them in your prayers.
We had 14 rigs at the Minnesota Loons State Rally held
in Preston, MN August 7-11. We had 2 new members,
Sid & Nyla Herrick from Litchfield and Mel & Peg Kidney
from Forest Lake. Also Everett & Julie Israel, our Region
4 Directors, and Jim & Sue Hagedon, our Members-atLarge were in attendance. We all enjoyed the Amish tour
and Slims Wood Carving Museum. The highlight of the
rally was going to Vic & Mary Spaulding’s “cabin” for rides
around the property, ending with a picnic supper. Thank
you Frank & Mel for manning the grills.
The following new officers were approved by the
members: President-Stan Lundmark; Vice PresidentMary Beth Scavo; Secretary-Judy Lundmark; and
Treasurer-Bonnie Schumacher.
Page 21
The upcoming events for 2013 are October 4–6 in
Hinckley for a get together, and November 2 for a chili
supper at Korsten’s. More information will be coming
by email.
Dates for 2014 rallies are: May 5-8 in St. Cloud, hosted
by Schumacher’s and Lundmark’s; State Rally in June
(dates pending); and an August rally (dates pending)
hosted by Scavo’s and Shereck’s. Check the “Calendar
of Events” for dates.
Thank you to all the new officers, rally hosts, and volunteers.
You make our club great!
Safe travels.

NEBRASKA
Hello Everyone! The Husker Kountry Kruisers have
experienced two more wonderful get-together’s this year.
The first was hosted by Jim & Marilyn Krueger July 9-12
at Kearney, NE. Jim & Marilyn always plan such a great
time that everyone hates for the rally to end. It was a real
pleasure to have the new Florida State Directors, Kent &
Nancy Miller, join us, who are also Husker Kountry Kruisers.
The Krueger’s had tours setup for Ward Laboratories,
Baldwin Filters, the Classic Car Collection, and The Great
Platte River Archway. The tours were all very nice and
informative, and of course we all ate like Kings. With 8 rigs
it was a very good turnout. Thank you again Jim & Marilyn
for a job well done.
The next great adventure was a family get together Aug
7-11 planned by Jerry & Joy Buechele, our perfect Iowa
friends. Seven of us bombarded them at their farm near
Grafton, IA. We all had a very wonderful relaxing time
visiting around their campfire in the evenings. We toured
the Spam Museum in Austin, MN and Wallace Printing in
Osage, IA. It was really good to get to spend time with
them. They are always fun to be around and let me tell you
Jerry & Joy know all the good places to eat. Thank you
Jerry & Joy, you guys are the best.
As this is written we are having our September luncheon,
which also will serve as our State Rally. It will be held
September 22 at Chances R Restaurant in York, NE. The
luncheon will be hosted by Roger & Barb Goettsche.

NORTH/SOUTH DAKOTA
We have returned from the South Dakota/North Dakota
State Rally and Rushmore Roamers Chapter Rally, August
19-22, 22 miles west of Murdo, SD at the KOA Belvidere
East Campground. We were honored with the presence
of Everett & Julie Israel, Region 4 Directors, of the Newmar
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
Kountry Klub. We also welcomed fulltimers, Dick & Judi
Ward, from Mt Prospect, IL.
While at the rally we had tours of the following places of
interest: 1880 Town, Pioneer Auto Show, Minute Man Missile
Site, Petrified Gardens, Badlands, National Grasslands
Visitor Center, Stroppel Hotel and Mineral Bath, Wall Drug,
and Scrappy (who has been to Texas and back).
Since the last Konnection I have visited two local RV dealers
(not Newmar) and asked if I could place light bulb stickers
in the Newmar RV’s. Received favorable response from one
and not so favorable from the other. We did visit Midstates
RV, Summerset, SD near Rapid City, SD. They are a
Newmar dealer and they do place stickers in the RV’s.
It has been a busy summer and soon we will be heading
south for the winter. We are making plans for the 2014
Rally (location has not been determined yet).
If you are a member of the Newmar Kountry Klub you are
welcome to attend rallies when you are traveling in other
parts of the country. Just contact the person in charge,
and they will assist you with registration forms and make
sure that you are welcome.
We are in need of a President and Vice President for
the South Dakota Rushmore Roamers. Please volunteer
for one of these positions. We also need someone to
volunteer for restarting the North Dakota Chapter.
Please contact me if you will, or if you know of someone
willing to help. If you have any questions please call us at
605-543-5527 or email [email protected]; we would
love to hear from you.

We had a great rally at the Fond du Lac Fairgrounds on
September 10 -13, hosted by Howie & Jan Gundrum
(11974-L). We had several tours and many fun activities
and good food was enjoyed by all. We would like to thank
them for all their efforts by providing such a good rally.
We now have rally hosts for the 2014 Chapter Rallies in
May, June and September; the exact dates will be set
in the near future. We have the International Rally at
Escanaba, MI in July and the Region 4 Rally in MN in
September. We are currently planning our State Rally for
either August or later in September or early October. Again,
this date and location will be set in the near future.
As people or Chapters are making travel plans to Escanaba,
MI for the International Rally, if you need any assistance,
feel free to contact us. If you need to locate a campground
in Wisconsin for a nightly stop or for several nights, we can
provide locations that are sized for your units and some
activities in the area.
As we move into the fall season we would like to wish
everyone a Happy Halloween and Thanksgiving. We also
want to wish everyone safe travels for those that are heading
south before the snow starts to fall in Wisconsin.
For those that do go south for the winter, it’s now
possible for you to have two addresses with the Klub
Office. All you need to do is let them know what dates you
are at each location and they will send your Konnection
and other mailings to your winter and summer addresses.
This is another service that the Klub is now doing for your
benefit, so use this service.

ATTITUDES ARE CONTAGIOUS, IS YOURS WORTH
CATCHING?
I find this statement to be true for one’s personal life as
well as for each of us as Klub and Chapter members.
It’s through our attitudes that we continue to grow our
Chapters, we attract more good members by showing
who we truly are and how we treat each other within the
group and personally.
I believe this is why the Northern Aires have continued to
grow our membership over the years. We want to thank
everyone for their efforts.
A big thank you to George & Theresa Korycan (18963) and
Howard & Diana Hill (18335) for the great rally at Wisconsin
River RV Resort in Spring Green on July 23-26. Our
members that attended this rally had time to enjoy the many
local activities, such as the House on the Rock and etc.

REGION 5 // AL, FL, GA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA
Region Directors :: Bob & Bonnie Krieger (12508)
Oh My Gosh!! Writing once
a g a i n a s w e ro l l d o w n
the interstate. So glad
all these tools of modern
communication work as we
continue our travels across
this beautiful country. Right
now we have the bloom of
summer flowers and the
green of late summer but
it is about to turn to the
grandure of fall colors....orange, maroon, yellow leaves of
the mountains. Did someone say that college football has
begun? Our Region is in full swing for fall rallies and the
return of many to our southern-most state of Florida. Hello
Snow Birds!! Welcome to your Winter Home!!
A very good time was had at the Tennessee/Virginia rally
in Bluff City, TN. The Volunteer Kruisers and the Virginia
Wheels discovered a new way to have a joy ride. Yes
indeed, there were a few anxious moments as our “tour
guides” took us on the Bristol Motor Speedway drag strip.
It was amazing how fast a 12 passenger van can get off
those lights and roar down the track. The best was yet to
come when that same van took us around the track at the
Bristol Motor Speedway. You have no idea about the slope
of the track just watching those NASCAR events. It was a
28 degree slope and as she drove us around and around
many of us were hanging on!! Can NOT imagine doing that
at over 130 miles per hour!! I think the ladies enjoyed that
more than the guys.
Our Region 5 rally is ready to go! We will gather in
Tennessee at River-view Plantation Campground November
11-15 to enjoy the great shows and Christmas lights of
Pigeon Forge and Dollywood. We will have Magic, Music,
and of course.....good food!! Buddy Gregg will bring
several display units to the camp site so do not forget
your checkbooks for good deals. This will be a Regional
Rally with some of the elements of the old “Christmas in
the Smokies Special Event”. We have at least 4 shows
scheduled to attend including a very good magician show,
comedy, great music and Christmas pageantry. As we
said before, our first Regional Rally was in this location
and we are much more relaxed this time. Come and enjoy
the fun.
We are already having discussions with the crew at the
Tampa RV Super show in January. We have a limit on the
number of available sites and our registration cutoff date is
earlier. So, sign up early! The Newmar techs will be there,
Page 23
the Newmar tent for gatherings, The Newmar store, and
ice cream social!! Come and enjoy the fun!!
Speaking of fun; be sure to read about all the adventures
that are listed for your good times. Remember that all
Newmar Rallies are now “Bring a Buddy” so you can
introduce them to the Newmar lifestyle and fun times. Share
with those other brands...”Come and enjoy the fun”!
On a very sad note – we lost one of our very good friends
and longtime Newmar members – Tony Grogan. Tony &
Ruth were very active in Newmar, Escapees, Good SAMS,
Civil Air Patrol, NCHA, etc. He will be sorely missed by all
of his friends. Please keep Ruthie in your prayers. Thank
you Wally & Sharon Sisk for your great help in this matter.
Our Newmar family is “powerfully” strong and our love for
one another is boundless! Stay close, Ruthie!
OK...we did it..got the article in early, but WOW! Linda
has gone on vacation.....oh my gosh.....what do we do
without our Linda! We can be reached at Nkkregion5@

FLORIDA
We hope all of you have had wonderful travel experiences
this past summer. This summer has been a totally new
experience for us. Unlike the last 8 years that that were
spent taking care of a campground at Hazen Bay on the
south shore of Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota, this
summer we have devoted to attending rallies and visiting
family and friends from Sebring, FL to San Jose, CA.
The winter rally season in Florida will begin with the
October 17-19 rally of the Emerald Coast Sandpipers
to be held in Navarre, FL. That will be followed by the
early November rallies of the Manatee’s, Pelican’s and
Sea Turtles’. The rally schedules of all four chapters look
like we have some very interesting rallies scheduled for the
winter season here in Florida. We hope to see you at a rally
this winter as we plan to attend as many rallies as possible.
Don’t forget to get your reservations in for the Tampa
Super Show January 14-19.

With the hot days of summer behind us, our thoughts turn
to the spectacular colors of autumn and the many activities
that lie ahead. The Georgia State Rally is right around the
corner, closely followed by the Region 5 Rally and then,
before you know it, the Holiday Season is upon us.
The Peach State Kracker Summer Rally in Fletcher, NC
was a big success. We thank John & JoAnne Milliken for
all the wonderful planned activities. More information and a
picture of this rally can be found in the Chapter President’s
message.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
It’s not too late to sign up for the Georgia State “Sweet
Home Alabama” Rally, October 23– 27 in Decatur, AL. We
have a few spots remaining, so call today for reservations.
Great BBQ, a visit to the Space & Rocket Center and a
luncheon cruise aboard an authentic paddle wheel river
boat, highlight this rally. Georgia’s new Newmar Dealer,
National Indoor RV Centers, will have some new 2014
models on display. Details can be found in the ad in this
issue of the Konnection. Join us for some good old southern
hospitality.
The Region 5 Rally, November 11-15, will be one you
don’t want to miss. Bob & Bonnie Krieger have a wonderful
agenda planned for this Pigeon Forge, TN rally. See the ad
in this Konnection. Hope to see you there.
We will be the hosts for this year’s Christmas Luncheon.
Look for details soon.

Fall is upon us….WOW, where did the summer go? Hope
you all worked on your bucket list of “Things To Do”
this past summer. Sharon & I got one of ours completed
with the Bristol Rally. It was our first time to visit East
Tennessee. What a beautiful area and awesome peoplesmiles everywhere. We are looking forward to going back
and spending more time in that area.

We would like to extend a warm Tennessee Volunteer
Kruisers welcome to our returning members, Bill & Liz
Robertson. We so look forward to seeing you both in
Chattanooga this fall.
In closing, we must say farewell to Tony Grogan who now
travels the Highways of Heaven. Tony is truly missed by
his Newmar Family as he had traveled many, many miles
with us and served as Chapter President with the New
England Aires when they lived in Massachusetts as well
as Chapter President for the Tennessee Volunteer Kruisers,
after they moved to Tennessee, plus volunteered countless
hours at many different rallies. Tony served his country in
the United States Air Force along with over 50 years of
volunteered service in the Civil Air Patrol earning the rank
of LtCol. Tony, throughout his life, gave freely of himself to
make our Great Country a better place. God Bless You,
Tony! Please, keep Ruthie in your prayers as she moves
forward with life!
See you all as we travel our Great Country. Be safe. God

VIRGINIA
The summer season is behind us and we are preparing
to get back on the road after Betty’s recovery from knee
replacement surgery. We missed the Bluff City, TN Rally,
but all reports indicated that it was a great success. Thanks
go out to co-hosts, Charlie & Deane Grebinger and Tommie
& Maggie Manning, for a wonderful rally!! Both were first
time rally hosts. We are now looking forward to football
season and travels with some of our Virginia Wheels and
Virginia Tech friends.
We want to remind everyone of the remaining Virginia
Wheels Rally scheduled for 2013: October 8-11 in
Lynchburg, VA at Thousand Trails RV Park. Don’t forget
the Region 5 Rally in Pigeon Forge, TN at the River
Plantation November 11-15. We encourage everyone to
attend these rallies if at all possible to renew acquaintances,
meet new friends, and enjoy fun and fellowship. Don’t
forget the Tampa Super Show Rally January 14-19.

EMERALD KOAST SANDPIPERS
Our chapter rally season has been inactive since my last
report in the August/September edition of the Konnection
magazine. However, the effort continues to add members
from the new owners that are identified to chapter officers
by the NKK office. Without going into names in particular,
I’m pretty sure that our chapter will pick up 3 new members
by the end of this year. Recent contact via e-mail has
indicated that 2 new owners from NKK data and a third
from a reference to me, want to join our ranks. I’ll have more
definitive information to report later in the fall of this year.
However - - - the fun doesn’t stop at securing new
members. We did not have a rally scheduled for September
but have rallies scheduled for October, November and
December. Please refer to the “Calendar of Events” in the
back of the Konnection.
We Sandpipers are looking forward to personally meeting
and rallying with the new Florida State Directors, Kent &
Nancy Miller, at our October rally in Navarre, FL. Also,
there’s a possibility that one of those new members may
be in attendance at the October rally.
So until we all meet then, drive safely and hopefully we’ll
see you down the road somewhere.

FLORIDA MANATEES
Why did we come back to Florida in August? We had a
reason but having to endure the 90+ temperatures and high
humidity and the daily rain showers have made cleanup of
the yard difficult. We are so fortunate as RVers to be able
to travel whenever we wish and go where we are more
comfortable with weather.
We are planning for our first rally on November 7-10
at Crystal Lakes RV Park in Mims, FL. We of course
are planning on visiting Dixie Crossroads for their Rock
Shrimp. Other activities will be the casino ship, Yankee
pot roast, and also reviewing our summer travels. When
the announcement arrives in your mailbox, please respond
quickly so we can finalize plans.
We also have nominations for our officers for 2014. So,
think about it and consider volunteering to serve as
a chapter officer. The current officers have served for
over 7 years! The duties are not difficult and will provide
interesting new challenges for improving our chapter.
Page 25
Our December rally will be in Tropical Palms in
Kissimmee, FL. Hosts Gafner’s and Burnette’s are already
planning. This is followed by the Tampa Super RV Show
on January 14 – 19, 2014 and this year, we will have
limited space so get your reservations in when you see
the ad in the Konnection.
George Englar is slowing improving with physical and
speech therapy. He still has a way to go but he is making
progress. We are looking forward to having he & Bev at
one of our upcoming rallies. We have missed them.
As this is written our Labor Day holiday is approaching, hope
you were able to go out and enjoy that last big outing with
the rest of the nation. After this day, many campgrounds
are more open and provide great fall camping.
As many of you begin your travels to your winter destination,
remember to drive safely and be aware of others that may
not have your driving skills. Join a rally and meet new
friends. Until we meet at future rallies, enjoy the great life
as an RVer.

FLORIDA PELICANS
By the time that this is being read, the Florida Pelicans will
have started the season with our first fall luncheon. We
returned to a favorite eatery of many Pelicans......
The Three Fisherman in North Fort Myers, FL. There
were 10 Pelicans in attendance plus 2 guests. The
food was great and everyone reconnected with tales
of their summer adventures. Unfortunately, I had to
announce that our luncheon hosts for the past 2 years,
Fred & Marlies Rump were resigning due to personal
reasons. Therefore, a plea was made for someone to
step forward and take the position of luncheon host.
I would like to highlight our coming calendar for 2013 -2014
as it now stands. October – May Monthly Luncheons.
Each month a mystery location will be announced.

FLORIDA SEA TURTLES
The Sea Turtle rally season kicks off November 6-10 at
Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, FL. Hosts,
Brian & Nancy Howard [email protected], have
a lot lined up and that weekend will also be the Civilian
Conservation Corps annual celebration at the Park. That
alone is reason enough to make this a must attend rally.
the Flat Rock Playhouse for the play “The Death Trap” on
Saturday night was an entertaining way to end a weekend
of good fellowship and great weather. Our rally hosts,
John & Joann Milliken, did a fantastic job planning events
and meals. Seven of our couples are shown in the photo
in their Pirate Night regalia. Following that will be the December rally at Tropical Palms
RV Resort in Okeechobee December 5-8, hosts will be
Kent & Nancy Miller [email protected]. At this rally we will
elect officers for the year 2014. Since Nancy & I will no
longer be able to hold officer positions there will be at
least two positions to be filled.
We have had a very enjoyable summer attending rallies,
visiting friends and relatives all over the country. Shirley
Bennett crossed our path in western Nebraska early
in August. She and her travelling companion, Arnie
Ironwood, have been enjoying their summer travels also.
She attended our family reunion in a pasture canyon in
Southwest Nebraska with us. Before you get the wrong
idea since she is traveling solo she puts her golf bag and
clubs in the passenger seat with a ball cap on the clubs
hence the name Arnie Ironwood.

PALMETTO PALS
We are getting to the end of the 2013 rally season. There
are two events in our future. The Region 5 Rally November
11-15 in Sevierville/Pigeon Forge, TN. We hope that
many of the Pals will be there. The second is the annual
joint South Carolina/North Carolina Christmas Rally at
Ocean Lakes Campground in Myrtle Beach, SC. Mark
& Doreen Blanchard and Chip & Sarah Wright are the cohosts for the rally. They are trying a mid-week timing for
this year’s rally to get it earlier in the month. The dates are
December 10-13 with early arrivals or extended stays
available. This is a fun time to visit the Myrtle Beach area
with many Christmas shows and special shopping to finish
your Christmas gift list. Check the “Calendar of Events”
for contact details. We hope you can join them for a rally
that is always a fun time.

PEACH STATE KRACKERS
We just completed our summer rally at the Rutledge
Lake RV Park in Fletcher, North Carolina, as this is
written. Highlights include visiting the Folk Art Center on
the Blue Ridge Parkway, “Pirate” night with Flat Matt in
attendance, lunch at the scenic Pisgah Inn on the Parkway,
and visiting various farmer’s markets and apple orchards for
those excellent Lake Lure tomatoes and apples. Attending

The Christmas luncheon is being planned for a restaurant
near our new Newmar dealer in Lilburn, Georgia. With
our new local dealer, we hope to be adding new members
on a more frequent basis. We stopped in to visit with the
folks at National RV Center recently and they have some
gorgeous Newmar coaches on their lot. Look forward to
seeing most of our folks at the upcoming state rally in north
Alabama as we get on the road again.

TARHEELS
Our no-host rally held in mid-July in Galax, VA was a most
enjoyable event with a lot of fun and fellowship. Everyone
had a good time.
This is the time of year that most all members are out on the
road “seeing what is over the next hill and around the next
bend in the road”. Schools are back in session and most
vacationers have returned to work. The fall is a beautiful
time of the year in the Carolinas---come see us!
We have at least two Newmar rallies to plan/signup for. One
is our Region 5 rally held in Pigeon Forge/Sevierville, TN
from November 11-15 at River Plantation Campground.
This is an excellent facility that you don’t want to miss
as well as all the attractions and things to do in the area,
including Dollywood.
Secondly, our joint Christmas rally with the South
Carolina Pals will be from December 10-12 at Ocean
Lakes Campground, located right on the ocean, in
Myrtle Beach, SC.
Look forward to seeing you ---- make plans now to attend
these rallies.

Good luck everyone.

As a way of meeting our Newmar Family
members, we encourage you to nominate
a member who has gone “beyond the

you wish to nominate, along with the

2014 RHINE RIVER CRUISE The Reservation Book is Now Open!
The brochure is now available for the Rhine
River Cruise in September, 2014, and those
Kountry Klub Members that requested a
brochure earlier now have it in their hands.
Our agreement with the Kountry Klub office
stipulated that their members would be given
advance notice about this product before it was
opened for sale to the general public since the
Kountry Klub has been such loyal customers.
European River Cruising is growing in popularity
and our Rhine cruise itinerary has some of the
highest demand. By chartering directly with
the ship’s aowners in Switzerland we are able
to offer a price which is roughly $1,000.00
per person lower than most of the popular
companies you see advertised on national
media.
Our quarterly newsletter was in our client’s
hands by mid- September so we would urge
anyone that is interested in cruising with us to
act promptly. We only have 62 cabins available
and we would hate to see anyone left out that
has a European River Cruise on their bucket
list. Call Edgerton’s Travel at 1-800-643-4604
for information or if you would like to join us.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
REGION 6 // IN, KY, MI, OH, WV
Region Directors :: Ron & Wanda Llewellyn (16303-L)
“The World is a book, and
those who do not travel
read only a page.” – Saint
Augustine
I love to read, but if I only
read one page, the book
would have no meaning.
Likewise, traveling must
continue to have meaning.
We have been on the road
a lot again this summer and it has been awe inspiring!
Hosting the Region 6 Rally in Georgetown, KY was an
enjoyable chapter in our book of travels. We certainly
enjoyed our tours to the Kentucky Ford Truck Plant,
Louisville Slugger Museum and Churchill Downs. We want
to offer a special thank you to the fine folks at the Kentucky
Ford Truck Plant for allowing us to see their production line.
They haven’t allowed tours since September 11, 2011, but
were very welcoming to our group. I think we passed the
test for future tour groups!
the logging show we attended. Again, the weather was
superb! Thanks John & Carolyn Williams for a great rally!
Our next venture was to Escanaba, MI with International
Directors, Jim & Wilma Weeks. We always enjoy
spending some time with them and the travel along the
coast of Lake Michigan was very relaxing (speed limit is 55
mph) and enjoyable. Our first view of the Upper Peninsula
State Fairgrounds was not unusual to us, but probably was
a little concerning for the Weeks. The fair had just ended,
literally! It ended at 6 p.m. and we were walking the grounds
at 8 p.m. The locals and carnies were busy tearing down
and cleaning up. By the next day, you could hardly tell
there had been a fair. We spent two days checking out
the campsites, marking our map, and discussing potential
parking with the facility managers and crew. Jim & Wilma
also showed us around Escanaba and we were greatly
pleased by not only the scenery, but also the potential for
the 2014 International Rally. Mark your calendars! You
don’t want to miss this one! Thanks Jim & Wilma for
taking us along!
Our trip home took us around Detroit. We visited the
fairgrounds at Wayne County where we hope to hold
our 2014 Region 6 Rally. It is very close to Greenfield
Village and the Henry Ford Museum. There is so much
to see there and we hope you will consider joining us next
year. More information will follow.
But we didn’t stop there, we also visited the Evans Orchard,
with a unique playground area (for adults as well as kids)
and a lovely setting to just relax on the patio and enjoy
the scenery. Our last visit was to the Old Friends Retired
Horse farm. We learned a lot about what happens to
thoroughbreds after they are no longer of use in racing
and the groups’ efforts to provide them with a peaceful
retirement. The weather was phenomenal to say the
least.
We enjoyed the Ohio State Rally at the Sternwheeler
Festival in Marietta, OH over Labor Day weekend. We’ll
share more about this venture in our next article as well as
the Kentucky State Rally in Glasgow, KY in October.
The social activities were enjoyed by all, and we even
had some traveling Newmar owners and potential owners
checking us out! Thanks to the fine folks at Whispering
Hills RV Resort just off I-75 at Georgetown for being so
generous with your ice cream social for us.
We sure hope you will keep your travel chapters continuing.
There are still several rallies left in the season so be sure
to check out the “Calendar of Events”. Hope to see many
of you soon.
It seems that the weather decided to cooperate wherever
we traveled. After a week at our local county fair (and
many long days for Ron), we traveled to Rising Sun, IN for
the Indiana State Rally. Bill & Alice O’Brien planned a very
interesting schedule of tours. The food was fabulous and
the fellowship so satisfying!
In addition, plans are under way for our southwest
Florida winter luncheons the third Tuesday of each
month beginning in December and commencing in
March. All Newmar owners may join us at the Golden
Corral in Fort Myers, FL. Old friends, good food and
enlightening RV information are on the agenda. See you
about 11:30 a.m.
From there we had a long travel to Mackinaw City, MI for
the Michigan State Rally. Our trip to Mackinac Island and
the Grand Hotel was like traveling back in time. With no
vehicles allowed on the island other than an ambulance we
saw parked at the clinic, it was truly a walk back in time.
Glad we didn’t have to dress in those long dresses though!
Walking the streets of Mackinaw City was enjoyable as was
Page 29
We do keep a travel log of all of our travels so I guess you
can say our travels are like a book. Chapter after chapter
is great reading of where we have been, who we were with,
and often includes much history of our great country.
As always, we can be reached at [email protected]
or 740-707-7107 for Ron and 740-707-2063 for Wanda.
INDIANA
By the time you read this, the camping season will be
winding down. The Region 6 Rally in Georgetown, KY is
over, the Indiana State Rally in Rising Sun, IN is over and
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
the final chapter rally has taken place. All of these rallies
were great and hopefully enjoyed by all in attendance.
There is a final season luncheon planned for the Hoosier
Kountry Klub on Tuesday October 22, at 11:30 a.m. at
the Gold Corral in Kokomo, IN. Hopefully everyone will
be able to attend before they travel to warmer climates for
the winter.
A slate of candidates for 2014 was set at the state rally
and includes: President – Connie Ault, Vice-President
– Terry Miller, Secretary – Gary & Penny Farber, and
Treasurer – Jana Whinrey. We missed several long time
active members at our state rally: Don & Ginny Smith had
other commitments and John & Sharon Gast were absent
because Sharon had just had her knee replaced.
Plans are already in the works for 2014 rallies and the
President is looking into joint rallies. There have been
two previous joint rallies: One with an Illinois chapter
and one with the Michigan Aires. Both were absolutely
great and gave members a chance to make new friends and
renew acquaintances. Don’t forget the 2014 International
Rally in Escanaba, MI. It has been reported that our
region, including Indiana, will be in charge of parking and
registration. I know everyone will step up and volunteer. It
will be important to get the registration in early because
the number of attendees may be limited.
If we don’t see you in October, we’ll see you at the
International.

KENTUCKY
Greetings from Davenport, IA! As this is being written,
we are traveling on our way back to Kentucky after a very
spectacular trip to the Canadian Rockies and our 50th State,
Alaska. Thirteen weeks of travel, over 14,000 miles driven
on the motor home so far has confirmed this trip as the
must item on our “bucket list”. Pictures do not do justice
to the beauty and grandeur of this land. While many of
the roads are challenging, especially the Top of the World
highway (and I use the term highway loosely – those of you
who have taken this road know what I mean) from Dawson
City, Yukon Territory to Chicken, Alaska, it was all worth
it to see up front and personal the vastness of the land,
Page 30
revel in some amazing wildlife encounters, and take in the
awesome beauty created by mother nature.
The Kentucky State Rally will be held at the Cave
Country RV Campground in Cave City, KY October 1518. It is important that you contact the campground
directly (270-773-4678) to make your reservation as
the campground does not take group reservations.
Please see the details in the past June/July and August/
September issues of the Konnection or on the NKK
website.
We are always looking for rally hosts and members
willing to serve as officers of the Bluegrass Kountry
Roamers chapter. Please contact us if you have an
interest – volunteering is what keeps our Klub active
and viable.
Safe travels until we meet again. We can be reached at
(502) 228-4025 or [email protected].

MICHIGAN
Ah, Fall! I know that there are other states that are
beautiful in the fall, but I feel Michigan is the best place
to be September thru November. The foliage is stunning,
the air is crisp and even the smell of burning leaves is
nice. The rallies in the fall are better for me because the
summer humidity is gone and I feel better out walking
around. I even enjoy a camp fire. Potluck meals have
all the fresh fruits and vegetables made up in the most
delicious ways. Almost anything with squash is at the
top of my list. I think the potluck meals are what make a
good rally.
I want to thank all the rally hosts this year for another
job well done. Even the rally we attended in May
that was a “no host” was a success. Our Michigan
chapters are the best. Everyone lends a helping hand
when ever and where ever it’s needed. Our State Rally
was a great time as well. We had 30 rigs at Mackinaw Mill
Creek Camping. We even had folks from out of state, our
Region Directors and our International Directors joining
us.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
Jim & Wilma Weeks and Ron & Wanda Llewellyn left our
rally to nail down some things for the 2014 International
Rally in Escanaba. I’m already getting excited about
going to Escanaba. I’ve never been there and I hear
they have FUDGE! I’m hoping all the Michigan members
are planning to attend and to volunteer for Parking and
Registration again. It’s more fun to be involved and it’s
a great way to meet people. Be sure to watch for the
registration form in February, you don’t want to miss this
one.
I know many of us will be leaving for the southern states
soon. John & I pray you will all arrive safe and sound and
that you will have a wonderful winter. We are heading
for Texas again and we will be attending the Newmar
Luncheons there. If you aren’t going away for the winter
maybe you could have a luncheon in your area for Newmar
owners. If you need some ideas on what to do, call me @
810-240-7001.

OHIO
It has been a great camping season so far this year. Since
we last wrote our article we have been busy. We returned
home after The Country to The Castle Caravan on July 3.
The caravan was a lot of fun and we made some great
new friends. We can’t wait to see them again at the next
International Rally in Escanaba. Shortly after returning
home we were on the road again for the Region 6 Rally
in KY. Again we had a good time with lots of good eating
and fun tours.
August brought us to the Buckeye Rally at Coshocton
Fairgrounds. We had two new Klub members join us for the
rally and they decided to join the Buckeye chapter.
As we write this article we are preparing for the State Rally
in Marietta. We have some fun things planned and as
usual this group will have a good time. If you were unable
to make it to the State Rally we hope to see you at one of
the October rallies.
Be sure to watch your Konnection for the registration
for International Rally in Escanaba – registrations will
begin in February. We feel this will be a very well attended
rally and sights might be limited so don’t procrastinate.
Remember our region is assigned parking so be sure to
volunteer for parking. After a couple days of parking your
job is completed and you can enjoy the rest of the rally.
Happy Trails!

NEW JERSEY
WOW where did the summer go? We had small problems
with the RV and could not get to use it this past summer.
The last problem was the front AC-Heat pump stopped
working. We took to the new Newmar Dealer in NJ. Dylan’s RV, 2190 Delsea Dr, Sewell, NJ. First thing they
said to us was we love Newmar’s and are happy with
the quality they are built with. As a dealer we have very
little problems with them when we receive them from the
factory, «it would be nice if all the RVs were delivered in that
condition”. They started to check the AC as soon as I told
them the problem and just about the time the work order
was written up [we were watching the tech check the unit]
we were informed what was wrong was the compressor
was shot, so the work order was amended. About a
week later we had our new AC-Heat pump installed.
As of this date we have 14 RVs coming to the Region 7/New
Jersey State Rally on September 10-15 for the Hershey
RV Show.
We ask for your prayers for our sick members and former
members.

NEW YORK
Where did the summer go? June was the International in
DuQuoin, IL where New York units placed 8th in members
present. Many of the members won daily door prizes of
camping accessories, coolers, and gift certificates from
various vendors.
In July the Lakers had a rally at Julius Ponds, NY, hosted
by Ernie & Joan Griswold. This rally was well attended,
great food and great companionship.
September - Region 7 Rally in Manheim, PA, near the
Hershey, Pennsylvania RV Show. This rally was hosted by
Joe & Barb Lawlor from New Jersey. Some traveled to the
Gettysburg battle field for an interesting trip.
October - the Lakers will be having a rally at the Genesee
Country Campground, 40 Flint Hill Rd, Caledonia, NY
October 18-20. Cost of the camping is $27.00/night. This
rally is hosted by Bob & Bonnie Schruise 716-471-1150,
email [email protected]. Reservations by October 1.
Friday or Saturday evening there is a special event at
Genesee Country Village call “Spirits of the Past Theatrical
Tours. Cost of the 75 minute tour is $16.00/person.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND STATES
Hello again from Southern New England! Another great
rally has come and gone, hosted by Barb & Brad Wright,
a joint Connecticut and Massachusetts rally. Eleven rigs
enjoyed the weekend at Travelers Woods of New England
in Bernardston, MA. Campfires again every night, with
no rain. On Saturday we were treated to a narrated boat
ride down the Connecticut River. We had the pleasure of
watching bald eagles and were able to view their nest. It
was a wonderful sight to watch these majestic birds. We
also learned some of the history of the area and of the
French King Bridge, that we toured under.
As this is written the next rally in our district will be held in
Sandwich, MA on September 26–29, at the Peters Pond
RV Resort. This should be a great rally featuring a Lobster
Dinner.
Our next excursion will be to Hershey, PA for the Region
7 Rally in September, which coincides with the largest RV
show in the country. We hope to see some of our Newmar
friends while we are there!!
So long for now, Live each day like it’s your last!!

CONNECTICUT NUTMEGGERS
The Connecticut Nutmeggers and Massachusetts Pilgrim
Aires Chapter Rally was held this past weekend at Travelers
Woods of New England Campground in Bernardston, MA,
with 11 rigs and 25 people. If you missed it, you missed
a very good time. Thank you to hosts Barb & Brad Wright
and Russ & Joanne Merwin.
Thursday most all enjoyed dinner-on-their-own at Four Leaf
Clover restaurant. Reports from there were very good. Four
optimistic souls on a warm Friday braved the local golf
course (can you say “thrifty”), Oak Ridge Golf Club, and
found it a real treasure that they intend to revisit next year.
Others caught up on reading, cribbage, visiting, touring and
working on rigs, oh yes, and cooking. Friday night was a
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
roast chicken dinner with awesome desserts. And of course
the obligatory campfire closed out each evening.
Saturday was another on-your-own day, except that almost
everyone opted for the Connecticut River cruise and guide
in the afternoon. No whales were spotted but we did get
a great look at an eagle and his aerie and a fisheye view
of the French King Bridge. Dinner that night was potluck
and more great desserts, followed by a terrific campfire.
Russ Merwin was our Eagle scout/fireman again and a
mesmerizing time was had by all.
Sunday morning was very special as the campground put
on a super breakfast with juice, sausage, cook-to-order
omelets, hash browns and banana bread. Yes Sir, we are
coming back next year!
To coincide with the brunch Bob & Bonnie Schruise will
be hosting a rally at Genesee Country Campground 40
Flint Hill Rd. Caledonia, NY October 18-20. The cost will
be app $27.00 per night for water an electric. Reservations
must be made by October 1. The campground is very close
to Genesee Country Village. Call Bonnie at 716-471-1150
or e–mail [email protected].
Bonnie looked at Genesee Country Village website and
found that on Friday and Saturday nights, October 18 & 19
there is a Special Event called “Spirits of the Past-Theatrical
Tours”. Nineteenth century stories of unnatural happenings,
dark intimations and terrors that will haunt your nights are
right at home in this historic village. Using the 19th century
historic village as its canvas, the 75 minute tour will revisit
scenes from the pens of Edgar Allan Poe, the creators of
Sweeney Todd and others.” The cost is $16.00 per person,
not recommended for children under 12, not recommended
for those who have difficulty walking.
More information will be coming soon.

Paul Tachok (15208)
President
We are sad to report the passing of Tony Grogan who was
a founding father of the New England Aires chapter. He
was a popular figure and our prayers and condolences go
out to his lovely widow Ruth.
An aside and lesson-to-be-learned from David & Doreen
Collins: they lost a cargo door on the way home this
weekend that may not have been completely latched.
Ouch.
As this is written our next rally is at Peters Pond Park in
Sandwich, MA, on Cape Cod, September 26–29.

We are seeking a couple or individual to take on this challenging position.
The new Director(s) will be appointed effective upon selection for a term
of 3 years with a possible 1 year extension.
If you are interested in this position you must be a resident of any of
the States in Region 7 (Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania,
Rhode Island, or Vermont) and own a Newmar unit. You must be able
to lead, possess good communications skills, be self-motivated, be a
flexible team player, and like to meet a lot of wonderful people from all
walks of life.
This position offers many challenges. You will be responsible for organizing and hosting the annual Regional Rally and for interacting with Newmar
Dealers in your region. You will work directly with the State Directors,
Chapters, and all members in the region. You will also work with the
International Directors and the Klub office staff.

REGION 7 DIRECTOR NEEDED
It has been over 2 years since we have had a Region Director in Region 7. This has created an additional work
load for the other Region Directors, the Klub Office, the Members-at-Large and the International Directors.
At the International Rally, the other Region Directors have had to cover the International Rally assignments of
Region 7. In the Klub Office this has created an additional work load for Linda because instead of working with
a Region 7 Director, she has to work with the State Directors and Chapter Presidents answering questions and
passing down information that could be handled by a Region Director. Our Members-at-Large have stepped
up and handled the website information for Region 7. The International Director has solved some issues in
Region 7 that could have been resolved by a Region Director.
Because of the length of time without a Region7 Director, we must have a replacement by the end of November,
2013 or the Region will need to be divided among two or three other Regions. You have many well qualified people
in Region 7 who could handle the position. See page 34 for the list of requirements, duties and benefits.
PLEASE STEP FORWARD AND VOLUNTEER FOR THIS POSITION!

Region Directors :: Glen & Marg Bassindale (3387-L)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Hope you are all able to enjoy
the day with your family.
Our summer has flown by
and the main event for us was
hosting the Region 8 Rally
in Quebec City. We had 11
couples join us there to enjoy
this location. The campground
we stayed at was Camping
Transit in Levis and it was a wonderful site. We had use
of their gazebo for the entire stay which allowed us to do
most of our own cooking and provided us with the shelter
that we needed. We did have some rain and the weather
was a little cool, but we still enjoyed everything. We were
even treated to some impromptu fiddle entertainment by
two very capable young ladies, Emma and Olivia, who were
travelling with their grandparents, Jim & Marleen Langdon.
The oldest granddaughter, Alyssa, got a surprise when she
found out that this group did not just play Bingo!!!! We
ended our rally with a cruise on the St. Lawrence River
and it was a perfect night for that activity. We hope that
everyone enjoyed their visit and the fellowship with their
Newmar family.
Over the next few months we will turn our attention to
organizing next years’ rally. We are looking at a couple
of possibilities but we have to firm up a couple of dates
so that there is no conflict with other functions. We will
advise our plans as soon as we have something to report.
Stay posted!!!
We hope that we will have a good turnout at next years’
International in Escanaba, Michigan from July 14-19.
With the close proximity to Ontario, we would like to have as
many as possible attend. We will be looking for volunteers
to help us accomplish our tasks, so if you plan to go and
would like to volunteer, please let us know.
As the International rally in 2015 is going to be in West
Virginia, we are hoping to get the Region 8 Rally in
the east that year. To all our Nova Scotia and New
Brunswick members, please let us know if there is a
good campground that could host us and if there are some
special East Coast events that would be good to attend.
Our time frame for that year would likely be August to early
September to hold the rally.
Until next time...

OUR FAVORITE CAMPGROUND
Whittington Woods Campground
14297 State Highway 37
Whittington, IL 62897
618-435-3401
This private campground has large sites with lots of
trees and amenities that makes camping a wonderful
experience, especially for rallies. The owners are very
cordial and accommodating. You will love seeing
Reed’s gardens and landscape and the roaming
chickens. There is a large office with an activity
room, modern bathrooms, laundry, and pool. There
is a large shelter and plenty of open area for walking
your pets.
Reed & Mary Christensen purchased Whittington
Woods Campground in August of 2008. They fell in
love with the hardwood trees and felt the proximity
to Interstate 57 would make it an ideal overnight
campground. Major improvements that were made in
2009 were to totally remodel the main bathhouses and
swimming pool. Also, all tree branches were trimmed
to a height of 20 feet, stumps removed, and several
loads of rock were brought in to upgrade the roads.
All sites were inspected and upgraded throughout
the spring and summer by a friend of the family who
is a master electrician. Pull thru sites were extended
to accommodate the larger units that are on the road
today. Seeding has been done several times and due
to regular rains this spring the grass is finally becoming
established.
Reed & Mary have continued their vision of improving
the campground to first class standards by painting
the remote bathhouse and pavilion. A log cabin was
added in 2010. Pictures are located on their website,
www.whittingtonwoodscampground.com. New
concrete was poured around the office, brick replaced
Page 37
the old wood around the lower portion of the office,
and the top part of the office area was painted. New
machines were purchased for the laundry area as well
as upgrading the interior. Reed and Mary also added
a rally/clubroom to the office.
The Campground is host for several clubs throughout
the year. They had the privilege of hosting the Region
4 Newmar Kountry Klub Rally this year in June. Their
ratings in Good Sam/Trailer Life are 9/10*/10 and out
of 12,000 rated parks, they are in the top 300. The
Campground is also listed in the directory “Big Rigs
Best Bet.” If the chickens are laying eggs, as they
should, you could possibly stay for an evening and
receive a complimentary 1/2 dozen eggs. Reed’s
garden is one of the first things that you will see in
the summer as you enter the Campground. If it is
the right time of year you may take home tomatoes,
peppers, squash, or whatever is abundant when you
arrive. Reed & Mary look forward to meeting you in
your travels throughout Illinois.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
REGION 9 // AB, BC, MB, NT, SK, YT
Region Directors :: Dave & Joanne Killey (16152-L)
I saw a sign the other
day that said…. “How
May We Help You?” It was
a sign on the back of a
moving van. Not “a moving
van” but “the moving van”
that comes to your house
to move your furniture to
a new location. It was a
small sign; one that I had
to drive a little closer behind than normally I would find
myself. The driver hit his brakes and I darn near rear ended
him, but I did get to see the sign up close. Later that day,
I got to thinking of “How may we (Region 9 Directors)
help you (Kountry Klub Members)? Our manual states
our duties include to: supervise, educate, communicate
and keep your state/provincial directors, chapter presidents
and members abreast of Klub activities, developments and
goals. This is a very clear cut defined job description – but
void of the “how” part. For the past 3 plus years we have
done what we think are the main ingredients to fulfill our
requirements. But how do we know? How do we know
if the fruits of our labour are actually fulfilling the
wants and needs of you, the members? The only way
is to get some feedback from YOU! Please send us an
email or Facebook message to indicate that you are in
fact – really out there! We as your Region 9 Directors
are always open to any suggestions, comments and
new ideas; and we need to know we are on the right
track.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a
Happy Thanksgiving! Let us all give thanks for all we are
fortunate enough to have in life, and to remember those
who are less fortunate because “Not what we say about
our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of
our Thanksgiving”. Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated
on the second Monday of October, traditionally celebrated
to give thanks for a “Blessing of an abundant harvest”.
Traditional food such as turkey, cranberries, pumpkin,
pecans, etc. will grace our tables. A common image seen
this time of year would be a cornucopia “Horn of plenty”
filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables. At this time you
will find many Canadians taking a final trip to their cottages
or summer homes to prepare them for the winter months
to come. Although Canadians do tend to get together on
Thanksgiving weekend to celebrate; the holiday is not
celebrated to the same extent as it will be observed in the
U.S. on November 28 this year. Thanksgiving is one of the
biggest celebrations in the U.S.
Page 38
As this year draws to a close, and we prepare for the
annual trek to warmer climates, one cannot help but
think of next year’s local rallies. Rumors out there
of a southern Alberta rally; Osyoss, BC rally; and a
Vancouver area rally. Let’s see if we cannot offer those
rally hosts our full support by helping them out with the
planning and execution of these rallies. WE can be reached
at [email protected] 604-916-7767.
We meet, we part, we hope to meet again.
BRITISH COLUMBIA
First I would like to thank all the members who contributed
to this article “Where Are They Now?” We have all met
many members over of the years and as time passes
we always wonder how they are doing. In my research
the chapter was certified October 29, 1996. At that time
William & Joan Woodhouse were presidents, Joe & Inga
Bridge were vice presidents, Dave & Betty Sloane secretary/
treasurers. I was able to contact Bill & Joan Woodhouse.
They discontinued RVing in 2005 and purchased a home
in the Palm Springs area so winter includes many rounds
of golf, and sometimes in the company of Keith & Liz
Harrison another former member of the Dogwood Klub. In
the summer Bill & Joan enjoy living in Chilliwack, BC.
I contacted Gerry & Rita Hartley who still reside in
Kamloops. Gerry through a trade magazine still keeps up
with the changes happening in the industry and to this day
maintains there is not a better product on the market then
Newmar. They often talk about the people they have met
over the years and some of the road experiences. We were
a part of one of those caravans to an International Rally and
had a great time. They even mentioned they would love to
attend one afternoon (if the rally was close by) for a visit.
That is a great suggestion and it certainly will be kept on
the books. On a personal note Gerry is flying the RC Planes
and the RC Boats a very enjoyable hobby.
I managed to catch up with Vern & Gail Benedictson who
took time (to respond) out of their river cruise down the
Rhine & Danube from Amsterdam to Budapest then on
to Prague & home. Home is Penticton in the summer and
Country Roads Yuma in the winter. They both participate
in pickle ball, Gail continues to sew up a storm and Vern
continues to create a storm, “dust storm” that is in his
jeep Rubicon.
I was then lucky enough to contact Chuck & Millie Larson our
Dogwood Newmar members from Scappoose, OR where
they still reside. They miss their Canadian friends but still
manage to stay in touch with them. They also still manage
to enjoy functions and were able to attend Newmar’s
Special Event trip to New Zealand and Australia.
Perry & Rayne Jacobson reside at Sunset Ranch in
Kelowna, they have sold their Dutch Star but continue to
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
travel extensively in their Pleasure Way Van, and have also
taken the Alaskan and a European Cruise.
Eldred & Louise Rideout have sold their wheels for a park
home on Leisure Lane and now enjoy the sweet life in
Holiday Park Resort in Winfield. Hey that is where the
Kruper’s also live Easy Street that is …got to love those
names.
Arnold & Carol Penno are still active Dogwood Klub
members and this is a quote from Carol “we are whiling
away time sitting at home recuperating from surgeries” but
otherwise doing very well as we stopped by to see them
late June. This is a message from the Penno’s ”the coffee
pot is always on and we welcome visitors”.
When I caught up to Dave & Gwen Harris they were very
busy renovating and redecorating their home, but we
were sorry to hear Dave is still a one arm bandit due to a
shattered collar bone.
Gary Giles is back out of retirement and working on
the Sunshine coast as well as Surrey and by taking his
motorhome it allows him to take some very interesting side
trips while on location.
I checked in with Lyman & Charlene Robinson they are
enjoying retirement in Peachland in the summer and Del
Pueblo in the winter months.
Couldn’t believe all the medical challenges Harold & Carol
Drobott have faced, but they are doing fine now, even
though they no longer RV they still holiday in Mexico and
soon hope to vacation in California for the winter.
I learned Dave & Liz Otway relocated from their home in
Oliver to Penticton and living in my favourite developer’s
condo. Dave is struggling with a serious medical condition.
On behalf of all the friends you have made in the club over
the years we are “thinking of you” and wish you both “the
very best” They would have liked to attend the rally in
Christina Lake but had to decline.
This next couple, Bob & Kathie Harrison, we met them at
3 campsites in one trip. They were travelling to New York
and we were travelling to Vermont. They still reside on the
Westside and still enjoy RVing; we have extended them an
invitation to the rally; really hope they are able to attend.
Today I reached the “original Western Canadian
Representatives” which was their title when the Klub
started. Bill & Joan Blyth actually lived in Holiday Park
Winfield in 1992 as did we but our paths never crossed as
Bill & I did not join the Klub until 2003. Bill & Joan now live
in Happy Trails in Sun City, Surprise, AZ and I was lucky
enough to catch them home as they just arrived back from
a stay in the mountains. It was a delight to talk to Joan and
she wishes to pass greetings on to the members they knew
Page 39
that are still in our Klub.
I next talked to Robert & Dorothy Zilcosky; we know them
as Bob & Dot. They still live in Cloverdale, have retired
their RV but are now seeing different parts of our country
via Cruise ships. That is a pretty good trade off, I will think
of them as I shovel snow. Bob did spend a relatively short
time in the hospital in the states and shockingly received a
whopping 96,000 bill. They always travel with out of country
health care but they would like all our members to closely
check your coverage. Their out of country provider did
pay some of the bill but certainly did not cover the entire
bill. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share this
information.
Many of you will remember Leo & Sherry Knight, they
introduced all of us to campfire in a can, we remember
sitting around this campfire in Quartzite. Leo & Sherry live
at Sunset Ranch in Kelowna. They also have retired the
RV lifestyle but by no means are they retired. They really
enjoy the outdoors and continue to Kayak, Ski, Curl, Bike
and best of all have a website “campfire in a can” so now
you know where to go if you need one.
Gary & Karen Nuson were avid RVer’s for many years; they
currently live in Kelowna. Karen is very busy volunteering at
Second Stage Recovery Home out of the Kelowna Gospel
Mission.
Wished I could have caught up with more former members
but phone numbers & email addresses have changed. I do
owe a debt of thanks to Joe & Inga Bridge & Gerry Hartley
for all the contacts they gave me.
September “Happy Anniversary” to Gary & Janice
Johnstone. “Happy Birthday” to Joanne Killey. October
“Birthday wishes” go out to Lee Pixley, Anne Caines, Brian
Anderson, Marlene Pearson. “Happy Anniversary” Gordon
& Jo-Anne Herle.

Cancellation Policy For Region,
State, Provincial Rallies
Due to the large number of late cancellations, the Kountry Klub
has experienced significant financial losses from non-refundable
commitments made during the planning stages.
A new Region, State/Provincial Rally “Cancellation Policy” is being
implemented.
1)An administrative fee of $10/person will be charged. This fee will cover
costs associated with processing your rally registration and will be
included in the rally fees as advertised.
2)Members who register for a rally and then:
a)For whatever reason, cancel a minimum of 35 days prior to the start
of the rally will receive a full refund, less the administrative fee of $10/
person.
b)Cancel 34 to 8 days prior to the start of a rally will be charged for any
non-refundable commitments made on your behalf in addition to the
$10/person fee.
c)Cancel 7 or less days prior to the start of a rally will receive No Refund
on any portion of the rally fee paid.
3)Members who register for a rally and do not advise the Hosts that they
will not be attending will receive no refund.
4)All refunds will be made at the conclusion of the rally.
PLEASE NOTE: Planning any rally requires long-term organization. Many service
providers require non-refundable financial commitments. Because these deposits
and financial commitments are often made well in advance of any rally, this policy
becomes a necessity.

ATTENTION CRAFT INSTRUCTORS
At our 2013 International Rally we offered twelve craft classes. We feel that may have been too
many since three classes were cancelled as only a few had signed up. For our 2014 International
Rally we feel ten craft classes would be sufficient.
In 2013 three of our members offered to teach a class and the rest we got instructors locally. It
would be great if ten of our NKK members would step forward and offer to teach a class in
2014. If you are willing to do so, please contact the Klub Office by November 1st and Linda will
email you an information sheet for you to complete and return.
If we do not have ten craft instructors step up from our Newmar Family by November 1st, we
will look locally for craft ideas in an effort to have a nice selection ready for you to pick from.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013
2014 Country to the Castle Caravan
Peggy Sue’s is a famous diner in the Nashville area. Many
celebrities dine here but we didn’t see any when we were
there. Dinner was served family style consisting of great fried
chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls and desert.
They just kept bring the food as long as we kept eating it.
Our group at a beautiful Kentucky horse farm.
This caravan was our first experience in hosting and we enjoyed
ourselves so much we hope to continue to host many more. We started
out with a brief breakfast meeting in DuQuoin where each couple
introduced themselves and we found out we had quite a group of
characters. We asked everyone to please give us at least 30 minutes
head start so that we could arrive at the first destination and get things
organized with the campground before they all started pulling in. Jerry
and I arrived in Paducah and no sooner had we paid the bill and we
had a unit rolling in the driveway. We weren’t even set up ourselves and
they just kept coming. The last unit to arrive had stopped in Metropolis
to check out Superman. At our ice cream social that evening we asked
that everyone please give us a minimum of 45 minutes after we left the
campground before they started leaving.
The next day we traveled to Nashville. We arrived and as I was walking
out of the office after paying the bill our first unit (same one as the
day before) pulled in. This time we put them to work guiding units
down to our camping area and helping to park them. In Nashville we
toured two very old plantation homes with lots of antiques original to
the homes. We had the most wonderful family style dinner where the
biscuits were to die for and the plates kept being refilled. We did find
out that one of our members could put away a whole bowl of whipped
potatoes all by himself. Definitely the highlight of the time in Nashville
was our trip to the Grand Ole Opry. We were so lucky to have such
great entertainment with Larry Gatlin, and then the Charlie Daniel’s
Band. When we were taking the backstage tour the group was standing
in the lobby area when both of these stars walked through and Larry
Gatlin was shaking hands and thanking us for coming. What a treat. It
was in Nashville that one of our traveling companions had never seen
a lightning bug/firefly in person. She was so excited about it she would
chase into the field to get close not realizing that if you aren’t still they
don’t light. She also was awed by the type of lightning where it comes
down and streaks off of that streak. We did have a good light show for
her a couple of times on this trip.
Our next stop was the National Corvette Museum. Instead of asking
everyone to give us the head start we just asked the one unit to travel
with us. This took care of them surprising us and rolling in on our
bumper. We were surprised to learn that more than half of the people
in the group either still owned or had owned a vette at some point
in their lives. After a huge box lunch we traveled on to Louisville. In
Page 48
Group photo at the Biltmore Estate in Ashville. We had
guided tours after the estate had been closed for the day
to the public. It was a great tour.
Louisville we visited the Kentucky Derby Museum, where I saw Flat
Matt sitting on top of a Derby Winner in full jockey uniform. We also
visited Bardstown where we had a tour of another Antebellum home,
and an outdoor drama. The tour of Louisville Slugger saw flat Matt again
giving our tour. That evening we cruised down the Ohio on the Belle of
Louisville. We had some free time in this area and some of our group
took to the Bourbon Trail.
Our new helper rig traveled on with us to the Kentucky Horse Park
where we had so much shade that people actually started sitting outside
and relaxing under the trees. We even had an impromptu potluck
dinner under the shelter during a rain storm. The one comment about
our rain was that during the rain it stays warm out and after the rain it
feels even worse. We had very hot temperatures with a lot of humidity
most of the trip.
We traveled on to Pigeon Forge where we spent time in the Smokey
Mountain National Park. We left everyone to do their own exploring in
this area. One night sitting under the veranda we had a demonstration
on how to use a whompum stick. We laughed so hard my side hurt.
Jerry and I were presented with our own personal whompum stick.
One of the group asked if this next old house we were going to see
was just another house with a bunch of antiques. I told him that even
though the castle was built in the late 1800’s it had been lived in until
the mid 1950’s.
We traveled on to the last stop on the trip the Castle, The Biltmore
Estate in Asheville, NC. Our private tour after hours was wonderful.
We had the entire next day to explore the grounds and gardens or
revisit the house. Everyone went in different directions but at dinner
that evening all I heard was how spectacular this place was and how
great the whole trip had been. The person who asked if this was just
another house filled with antiques came up to me and said how awed
he was by this place.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article we knew we had some
characters in this group and we just want to say we enjoyed meeting
and traveling with all of you. We had as much fun as all of you did.
Thanks for making our first caravan a success.
