Remember:
Empty,
clean, dry
and loose!
Paper such as newspapers, magazines, office paper, shredded paper, envelopes, catalogues,
telephone directories, paper-back books and junk mail.
Cardboard such as cereal boxes, ready meal sleeves, corrugated cardboard boxes and
packaging. Large cardboard boxes will be collected if presented next to your recycling bin.
Food tins and drink cans such as those used for soft drinks, baked beans, fish and meat.
Plastic packaging such as plastic bottles, milk bottles, soft drinks bottles and detergent
bottles, yogurt pots, margarine and ice cream tubs, ready meal trays and fruit punnets.
Aerosols used for furniture polish, deodorants, air fresheners and sprays.
Aluminium foil such as takeaway food trays, pies, ready meals and tin foil from the kitchen.
Tetra Pak cartons such as those used for juices, long-life food and drink, soups and
smoothies.
 Please ensure that items are empty, clean, dry and loose! This will keep your recycling bin clean,
makes the materials easier to sort and it really helps us to recycle as much of Barrow’s material as
possible!
 Never put these items in your recycling bin!


Bagged recyclables - the bags are difficult to recycle and we can’t sort bagged materials!
Food waste – it spoils the recycling meaning it cannot be recycled (it is also unpleasant to
sort!). Try composting at home or place food in your black bin.
Black plastic – this can’t be detected by the equipment that sorts your plastics. We are
working hard to find a solution that allows us to recycle these, but for now they need to go
in your black bin.
Nappies – these spoil the recycling meaning it cannot be recycled (they also unpleasant to
sort!). Try real nappies which can be reused or place nappies in your black bin.


Glass bottles and jars – they break easily and contaminate the paper and cardboard. They
also pose a risk to the workers who sort your recycling. Glass should be recycled separately
in your recycling box (see below).
Hard plastics – these are too large to sort and bale. Take them to your Household Waste
Recycling Centre on Walney Road.
Clothes and shoes – we cannot recycle these. Donate them to a charity shop or recycle them
at your Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Tissue, kitchen or toilet paper – these cannot be recycled with other paper and are often
contaminated with food or liquids.
Polystyrene – this cannot be recycled and should be placed into your black bin.
Plastic bags – these cannot be recycled and should be placed into your black bin.

Ceramics – items such as crockery, plates, cups and saucers cannot be recycled through the
glass recycling process and cause problems with the final recycled glass products.
Drinking glasses and pyrex – these cause problems in the glass sorting process.
Bagged glass - the bags are difficult to recycle and slow down the sorting process.
Other recyclable materials – other recyclables should be placed into your dark red recycling
bin so they can be separately recycled.
