IMIAL Level 2 Extended Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
Principles (QCF) (600/1688/7)
Who is this qualification for?
This qualification is intended as a Substantial Vocational Qualification at Level 2 and has
been developed for schools and colleges to deliver to learners aged in the 16-19 age group
either on a full or part-time basis. This qualification is for learners who have a keen interest
in the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry and are looking to progress into
employment within this industry.
This qualification offers a broad breadth of learning, from which learners can bridge the gap
in their existing qualifications. This breadth of learning is achieved by the four Applied Units:
 Vehicle Science
 Vehicle Mathematics
 Information Communication Technology for Vehicle Repair
 Vehicle Electrics & Electronics
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification and learners are not expected
to have any prior knowledge or experience, however an interest in the subject area is
advisable. The content level of this qualification would be similar to the study required for
GCSE grades A*- C.
What does this qualification cover?
The content of this qualification has been designed to provide an enhanced learning
programme to meet the future needs of the modern vehicle technician and master
technician. It will develop the specialist technical knowledge and practical skills required
to work in this industry alongside the development of wider transferable skills. This
qualification also develops additional skills in maths, science, electrical and electronic
principles and ICT as applied in the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry.
The mandatory units cover essential knowledge and skills such as; health & safety
supporting job roles and materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices. These
mandatory units develop the transferable skills required to work within a number of job
roles within the retail motor industry.
The mandatory specialist units focus on specific technical knowledge and practical skills
the learner will require to work in the light vehicle maintenance and repair industry
including; routine light vehicle maintenance, the removal and replacement of light vehicle
engine systems and components, light vehicle electrical systems and components, light
vehicle chassis units and components and light vehicle transmission systems and
components.
The range of optional units provides the learner with the flexibility to acquire additional
knowledge and practical skills to supplement their skills developed through the
mandatory specialist units. The optional units include; overhauling engine units,
transmission units and steering and suspension units, inspecting light vehicles, agreeing
motor vehicle customer service needs and the removal and replacement of mechanical,
electrical and trim components.

As well as the range of technical units available in this qualification, there are a number
of applied units. These applied units help further develop the learner’s knowledge and
skills in maths, science, electrical and electronic principles and ICT in a light vehicle and
engineering context.
As a result, learners successfully completing this qualification will acquire a significant
core knowledge and practical skills which spans the light vehicle maintenance and repair
industry, transferable skills required to work within a number of job roles in the retail
motor industry and additional knowledge and skills to enhance their employability.
What could this qualification lead to?
This qualification helps provide entry into employment within the retail motor industry as
a light vehicle service technician and also onto an apprenticeship in light vehicle
maintenance and repair (as a recognised knowledge qualification within the IMI
Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship Framework).
This qualification also provides a high level of underpinning knowledge and skills which
may allow progression onto some higher level qualifications in automotive and
engineering related subjects, such as the IMIAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Light
Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles. From here, suitable learners may be able to
progress to HE, for example, a degree in Automotive engineering or technology.
Who supports this qualification?
This qualification has been developed with input from employers, manufacturers and
training providers and is supported by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders
(SMMT).
This qualification is also supported by the Institute of the Motor Industry Professional
