Message from the Director
Cross Country is coming up next week and
information about this whole school, wet or fine
event is included in this week’s Update. It’s a new
course for us this year which will be especially
exciting!
On Wednesday we celebrated and congratulated
those students who achieved at the highest
academic levels last year. There were outstanding
results across all three levels but I am sure there
were also many smaller, but nonetheless
significant, milestone achievements which might
not be recognised publicly. Earlier this week we
were treated to the visit of two NASA personnel,
including a real live astronaut! Yvonne Cagle
spoke about how, when she is faced with a
problem or setback, instead of approaching it
again and again from the same angle she ‘pivots’.
Thinking the word ‘pivot’ reminds her of the
necessity, and success, of approaching challenges
and problems from another perspective.
I am confident that for many students who
excelled last year, in whatever form, it was the
ability to keep going, to try again, to learn from
failures and to find another way to forge through
barriers that enabled them to achieve the success
they did. Charles Darwin said that ‘It is not the
strongest of the species that survive nor the most
intelligent, but the one most responsive to
change. Or, to put it another way – ‘Failure is a
bruise, not a tattoo’! John Sinclair.
Kai and Korero Evening
We are very keen to get together with interested
Marsden families to contribute to the
development of a Maori strategy that will
strengthen our students understanding and
appreciation of, and confidence in, te reo and te
ao Maori. We feel that some fantastic steps have
been taken in the last few years but there is
much more to achieve. It is time for us to set
some clear goals and a timeline. To that end, we
invite you to a 'kai and korero evening' to meet,
chat, brainstorm and help chart a way forward for
everybody. No matter what your level of
expertise is, your contribution would be
welcomed.
Here are the details:

Science Opportunities
The Hutt STEMM Festival has some breakfast seminars during May that may be of interest to girls who
enjoy Science. The key focus is about introducing girls/women to STEMM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics and Manufacturing) and both the possibilities that exist for employment and
some wonderful examples of women in STEMM doing great things now.
The one that would be most beneficial is on Thursday 18 May 7.30 – 9am at the Dowse Art Museum,
Laings Rd, Lower Hutt. Please read the information in the link below and if you are interested in attending
let Ms Morgan know ASAP and we will see how we can make this work in terms of transport.

Debating Club WSU Competition Round 3
On Wednesday 10 May, the Junior Certificate debate team for
Samuel Marsden Whitby hosted a debate on the motion “That we
should ban smoking in New Zealand” This was a Limited Preparation
debate which means we only get the motion once both teams arrive in
the debating room and are then given 30 minutes to prepare our
debate. Samuel Marsden Whitby was affirming and Paraparaumu
negating. The team consisted of myself, Thomas and Cassidy,
competing against Paraparaumu Colleague, with Katie Daly as our
adjudicator. In the end there was only one point in it but
Samuel Marsden managed to pull through, with Cassidy named Best
Speaker. Katie gave both teams a lot of really helpful feedback.
Although it got a bit stressful, I thoroughly enjoyed this debate, and
can't wait for the next one.

Kids’ Lit Quiz Wellington 2017
We travelled by school minivan to Marsden, Karori’s new iCentre to compete in this year’s Literature Quiz, a test of how
much our Year 7 and 8 students have read. We took two
teams comprising both boys and girls, six students from Year
8 and two from Year 7. Team A was Melissa Thomson,
Scarlet Lynch, Charlotte Broomhead and Elliot Brook. Liam
Stone, Lachlan Marker, Jorja Robinson and Scarlett Greaves
were in Team B.
Student Achievements
Congratulations to Tannith Potgieter who won the Club
Champs 4's Bowls Tournament.
Jorden Young, Aidan Fransen, Edward Dundon-Smith and Michael Lennon Winton attended their first build
day at Weltec, Petone in preparation for creating a prototype electric car. This session focused on basics in
design, stability and clay modeling the prototype. The
students had a fantastic session with the tutors at
Weltec who shared their knowledge and gave them
some useful tips. The students created a simple
prototype using clay and toothpicks before making a list
of items needed for the next build day. High on their list
was to ‘scavenge’ for parts at the local Trash Palace and
car yards which will make their project more sustainable
(by recycling parts). The students are looking forward to
their next build day on 21 June where they start
assembling the chassis.
Sports
Marsden Whitby Football Team 2017
The boys had their opening match against Wellington College last Saturday.
This is an un-staged photo of the team at half time. They won 5-4 in a close
and good spirited grading game. Robson du Maurier was Player of the Day.
Mr Vaz
Marsden Whitby Hockey Team 2017
The team lost 9-0 to Wairarapa College but played very well, especially
considering the weather! They were determined and focused and hopefully
felt good about their efforts. Player of the Day was Jackson Miles for bravely
defending the goal and making some great saves.
Tom Wiltshire & Kathy Wiltshire
Marsden Whitby Senior Netball Teams 2017
Netball Blue
Marsden Blue team played against Aotea Tan and won 24-12, with Hayley Thomson being named Player of
the Day. The team started off a bit rough, with a lack of flow in the game, but eventually got into the hang
of it. It was a strong effort from the team and they did well for the first game of the season.
Annika Bailey
Netball Red
What a way to kick off the season! Marsden Red’s first game last Saturday resulted in a win. The score
against Aotea Teal was 26-16, with Phoebe Lee winning Player of the Day. She rocked the court with
energy and played extremely well through the mid-court with some great passes. Well done to Phoebe and
the rest of Marsden Red. Keep it up and play hard.
Gabrielle Embury
Netball White
Last Saturday Marsden Whitby White played Tawa College Fawns. It was a great game and everyone tried
so hard but, unfortunately, we lost 28-3. Player of the Day was Charlotte Alston. This was our first game
together so we did really well and our stepping was fantastic but what we all agreed we needed to work on
our passing. All in all it was a great game and everyone worked really hard.
