Rounds
• 2 rounds, 2 minutes per round
• The Home Base location (a) will be fixed
throughout the competition day
• The number of boxes for each round will be
different
• Teams will be given 30 minutes after the
number of boxes are given.
• All teams must submit their robot to the
impound area when 30 minutes have expired
and after their 2 minute 1st round has been
completed
10
Unveiling Unknown factors
and Rules during the 30 minutes
• Right after opening ceremonies, Chief Judge (or MC)
will tell just the number of white boxes as well as the
location of the black box to be used for each division
• Only for qualifying: Robot starting orientation will be
announced [NEW!]
• 30 min timer will begin and team pit is closed;
Judges/proctors will watch teams during this period to
ensure teams do not receive outside help
• Teams can use official playing fields
• Practice field as well as official fields will have the
official towers, but no official shapes yet.
Impounding Robots
• The following items must be checked when
the robots are impounded
– Width & Length: max. 35 cm
– Visible Team ID tag on the robot
• During this time, official playing fields will be
closed and setup with new secret black circles
or triangles. b, b’, b”, c, and θ values will be
given to Judges only.
Verification of
Measurement Method
• MC will call a team to assign an official playing
field.
• A Judge will ask the team to explain (using
hand simulation) what the robot will do
to measure the area
• This step is to help Judges determine whether
the robot actually measured the area, or
simply displayed a number
How to Setup Towers
• Before starting a round, a Judge will place the
tower near the center of each shape
• For qualifiers, the boxes will be oriented
parallel to the edge of the table. (For Regional
Championships or World Championship, the
orientation may be at random)
• Whenever reset is requested, Judges will use
the same tower setup
How to start the robot (1)
• Qualifiers: Teams must use the orientation
given before impounding robots
• Championships: Chief Judge (or Emcee) may
specify which way (orientation) the robot may
face using the clock direction, 10, 11, 12, 1,
and 2 o’clock, from the perspective of the
player. This orientation will be the same for all
teams during a round, but will be different for
round 1 and round 2.
15
How to start the robot (2)
• Can be placed in the Home Base plate
(aluminum foil tape) as long as part of it is on
or over the foil tape and it meets the size
requirements, May hang over the edges of the
table
• Players may pick up and modify their robot
without penalty only when any part of the
robot is on or over the foil tape
• However, the starting orientation must be
the same clock direction at each restart
16
Red Card (-5): max two times
• If tower is reset
• Robot falls off the table (no additional penalty
for pick-up)
• If any part of the robot is touched by a player
outside of Home Base
 The robot must be re-started from Home Base using the
same start orientation
 The team may (1) start without reset OR (2)
request full-reset of the tower. (Red Card!)
 If NO reset is requested, all boxes on the robot when
touched must be placed at the spot where the robot was
touched

expand automatically after starting)
• Height and weight limitation: none
• Only one robot controller for each robot
• Any number of sensors/sensor types
• Any number/type of motors/servo motors
• Any material/robot kit may be used to
construct your robot including tape, glue,
bolts and nuts, rubber bands, etc.
• Team ID tag

FAQs (1)
• Can teams adjust the height of the robot after
the tower information is unveiled? Yes. Teams
may need to bring additional parts.
• Is there a required sequence of missions? No,
but “the come back to Home” task must be
the last action. (In other words, when the
game ends, the robot must be at Home to get
the 10 points for returning home.)
21
FAQs (2)
• Can we ask for a reset of the tower when the robot
is in action? No, only when the robot is at the
Home Base.
• Can we ask for a tower reset without penalty when
the robot is over Home Base? No. Whenever the
tower is reset, a Red Card is given, if max Red Cards
not given.
• It brought the black box back to Home. Can a
player remove the box from the robot in order to
try remaining missions? Yes, after getting Judge’s
confirmation that the black box was saved. Give the
box to Judge.
22
FAQs (3)
• My robot brought the black box back to Home
Base. Can we ask a partial reset of the tower
without the black box? No.
• My robot brought a white box back to Home (-10
points). Can we ask a full reset? Yes.
• I grabbed my robot. Can I restart my robot without
the tower reset? Yes. But any box on or held by the
robot must stay at the place where the robot was
touched.
• Must the robot stop at Home Base? No. It is
desirable to make it stop. A player may pick it up at
Home Base without penalty.
23
FAQs (4)
• Do the Judges stop the clock to reset the
tower? No.
• Can a robot still display the area after the 2
minute time runs out? Yes.
• Can a player reset the tower? No. It must be
done only by Judges. Remember: you will be
asked to restart if you touch the tower boxes.
A penalty will be assessed.
24
FAQs (5)
• My robot fell off the table. Do I have to pick it
up? Yes. Any robot that falls off the table will
be given a red card and must return to home
base.
• Do all of the cables have to fit inside the 35
cm box? No. Cables in the air may extend
outside the body of the robot. The body of the
robot must fit within the 35 cm box.

Animation Videos for Judging
Practices
Use score sheets to score the following game animations
• http://youtu.be/QjDZRwoVZpg
Judging Tips (1)
• Check violations carefully during the run
• Reset the tower per request
• Score after the game by observing location of
the boxes and number of red cards, etc.
• It is a team’s responsibility to design robots in
such a way that the measurement displayed
on LCD can be shown to Judges.
• Judges at individual sites have the authority to
interpret any and all questions that may arise
during the competitions
Judging Tips (2)
• Check the orientation of the robot whenever
it starts. Any violations, ask re-start
• Important: If the robot does not do what the
team says it should do to measure the area,
the measurement should not be accepted (do
not write it down and the team does NOT get
35 points)
Game Ending
• Get signature from a team player
• Give the score sheet to Chief Judge
• After checking, Chief Judge will give the score
sheet to score keeper
29
Scorekeeper Instructions
• Get secret values (area of secret shapes) from the
Chief Judge
• Enter in the total score for each team under “Total”
• If no measured value is given, leave the “Measured”
column blank. e and Final score are calculated
automatically.
• Do not convert to mm2. Enter data as is.
30
How to determine winners
• Winners in each division will be decided by
average scores of Rounds 1 and 2
• Tie breakers:
1) Best score
2) Rerun, if needed
Note that this year we are not recording time taken to
complete the mission. The accuracy of the
measurement will be an important factor in deciding
winners.
