On the Move Challenge- Instructions

On the Move Challenge
Grade 6 Science: Physics
As a group, your TASK is to create a method for moving two items from
start line A across finish line B
*No part of a team member’s body may be between lines A and B, and
no part of a team member’s body may touch the object once it starts
it’s motion across the start line.
Part A: Get into groups of five and choose roles
Observers: select 2 observers, they will collect evidence of curricular
competencies, what they see and hear participants doing and saying.
Participants: select 3 participants, these three will actively engage in
trying to accomplish the task/ challenge.
Part B: Set up
On the tables are a taped start line A and a finish line B. The objects to be
moved will be behind the start line. On the table you will find a variety
of materials, these will be used to complete your task, which is to move
two items from start line A to finish line B.
Materials:
1 pair of scissors
1 cup
1 toilet paper roll
2 balloons
1 popper
2 paper clips
2 elastics
1piece of paper
Part C: Procedure
1. 2 Minutes: look at the materials (no touching), use your
imagination and discuss possible strategies of moving the objects
from A to B with your teammates.
2. 4 Minutes: the participants will use this time to attempt the task
of moving two objects across from lines A to B. Reminder, no body
parts may cross the line once motion starts.
The observers are documenting their observations: team actions
and discussions.
Part D: Reflections and Findings
2 minutes: the observers will debrief the group on what they saw and
heard (observations). The team will evaluate their methods and suggest
improvements.
