Year 3 and 4 – Spring 1
Chestnut and Sycamore
Happy New Year! We hope you have had a fantastic Christmas break and
are ready to start our exciting spring term. Once again we have a fabulous
Mission to look forward to!
Mission Literacy
All literacy work* will be linked to the Mission. Therefore, slight alterations may be made to the work
the children complete over the half term depending on what they plan to do and where the Mission
takes them. Some of the things the children will be doing are:
Planning their writing by:





Discussing writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand
and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar
Composing and rehearsing sentences orally (including dialogue), progressively building a
varied and rich vocabulary and an increasing range of sentence structures.
Organising paragraphs around a theme
In narratives, creating settings, characters and plot.
In non-narrative material, using simple organisational devices [for example, headings and
sub-headings.
The children will look quite a lot at non-fiction this term.
There will also be a lot of emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar. The children will
once again be bringing home spellings to learn and we will test them on a Friday. They will
then have the opportunity to tick the ones they can spell off their spelling challenge card.
Mission Maths
All maths work will also be linked to the Mission and the children may plan to use maths during
Mission Possible. Therefore, slight alterations may be made to the work the children complete over

Mission Possible
Mission Possible is a problem solving based approach to teaching and learning, “an approach to the whole
curriculum.” In order for children to understand the world in which they live, the teacher facilitates work on
real life situations, based around current affairs.
Our Mission for this half term is:
Which class can earn the most money by making exceptional products to sell
at auction?
Sycamore and Chestnut class will be working together to complete this Mission. Once again, if you feel you
have any resources or skills you could share to support us with our Mission, please let us know.
PE
The children will receive 2 PE sessions a week, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor. Please remember to
send your child with an indoor and an outdoor kit each week as quite a few children have
been coming without it.
Indoor kit – black shorts and a white tee shirt.
Outdoor kit – black tracksuit and a white tee shirt.
Things to Remember





Please make sure your child has the correct P.E kit as listed in the School Brochure. It
is recommended that children do not wear jewellery, e.g. earrings on this day as
children are required to remove earrings themselves or cover them up with tape, due
to health and safety requirements.
Children must have their reading book in school every day. We recommend that
you listen to your child read on a daily basis; this can be recorded on their
reading record card. Every child will read to an adult at least once a week at
school and books will also be changed once a week, if the children can confidently
read their book and fully understand it.
Long hair must be tied back at all times during the school day.
Clubs Night is on a Tuesday.
Please ensure pumps are in school at all times and are in good condition.
Homework
The children will receive a Mission Possible Booklet with homework choices. Please choose 1
to complete each week. We ask that children hand their homework in each Friday.
Your child will also receive spellings and will be tested on these regularly.
As the year progresses the children will begin to receive more pieces of homework.
The children now have their homework diaries. Please use these to comment on your child’s
homework or to leave messages for the class teacher.
Please remember to ask if you are not sure about anything. The
door is always open!
