Task Two - GLLM Moodle

Information
You can find information in a lot of ways. You can search on the Internet, look in
a book or magazine or on the TV. It all depends on what you are looking for.
Examples




If you need to know where a road is - use an A-Z or road atlas.
If you need to know what a word means - use a dictionary.
If you want to know what is on the TV - use a TV guide.
If you want to book a cheap holiday - look on the Internet.
Sometimes there are two or more places you can look to find the information
you want.
If you wanted to find out film times at the local cinema, you could go on the
Internet or check the local paper.
The information would be the same but it would look different.
Some books and large texts use chapters,
headings and indexes to help you find the
information you need.
Contents Pages
Information books, booklets and catalogues often have a contents page near
the front. This lists the topics or chapters of information you will find inside.
Chapters
Books often have chapters that are about one thing.
In this book, chapter 4 is all about trees. If you
wanted to know about trees in your garden, you
would go to chapter 4 which starts on page 91.
Story books also often have chapters and each
new chapter starts a new part to the story. You
will find the list of each chapter in the front, on
the contents page.
Headings
A heading is usually found at the top of the page or just above a section of
writing (a paragraph). Headings tell you what the text is all about. They help you
find the parts of the text you need so you don’t have to read everything in the
book.
An Index
You can find an index at the back of a book. It lists in detail all the information in
the book. The list is in alphabetical order to make things easier to find. It also
gives the page number where you can find them.
You will find more detail in the index than on the contents page. You need to
think of a ‘key word’ to use an index. In the example below, they key word they
would use is ‘tomatoes’.

Task Six
4.1a
When Laura goes to college for her English class, her teacher asks her to write
about her week.
Read the text and then write the right day of the week under each of the pictures
below
My Week
On Monday I went to college. My teacher told me that I needed a book for my
English course so I went to the library the next day.
I always work on Wednesday mornings. I enjoy my job in the kitchen, and I
like the people that I work with. I get paid cash, so the next day I went to get
my hair cut. I wanted my hair cutting because my new boyfriend was taking
me out for a meal on Friday night.
I see my mother at the start of the weekend with my little girl Jill. She loves
seeing her grandmother. The next day it was warm and sunny, so I took Jill
out to the fair. Oh well, back to college tomorrow.
Task Seven
