Bangor University Undergraduate
Internship Scheme 2015-16
Project Title: 6th UK Cognitive Linguistics Conference
School/department: School of Linguistics and English Language
Named contact in school/department: Dr Thora Tenbrink
Internship Period: Summer (May-June)
Internship Duration: 150 hours
Proposed Working Pattern:
This internship has a flexible work pattern and, of course, allows the student to work around his or her other
academic commitments. Due to the nature of the internship, the student will be required to participate in a certain
number of meetings. The times of the meetings will be negotiated with the student. In addition, there will be periods,
especially closer to the event, where the weekly workload will be higher than in other weeks.
Description:
The UK Cognitive Linguistics Conference is a biennial international conference, which will be held at Bangor University
from July 19 to July 22, 2016. The conference includes one day of workshops and four days of oral and poster
presentations. We expect that about 200 people, mostly from the UK, Europe and the United States, will attend the
conference. The successful applicant will help the conference organizing team in planning the event and thus in
ensuring that the conference will run smoothly. The intern will be invited to participate at the conference at no cost
after their official internship duties are completed. The purpose of this internship project is to give the student the
opportunity to learn transferable skills, such as effective communication and organisational skills.
Intern Role:
The intern will support the conference organisers in many aspects of planning the conference event, such as:
- assisting with the development, production and dissemination the conference programme, delegate packs and
other publicity materials
- assisting with the organization of excursions
- liaising with the conference office to book catering and to confirm room bookings
- assisting with the monitoring of online registration
- responding to (or passing on) queries as and when appropriate
- any other duties as may be reasonably expected of the post

In the process of these preparations, the intern will become fully acquainted with the requirements for the
conference, and will thus be able to take ownership of those portions that can be organised with support of student
volunteers. The successful candidate will thus be responsible for coordinating voluntary student support during the
conference preparation phase and in advance of the conference itself. This task includes communicating with
volunteers, speakers, participants, and conference organisers as well as specifying and managing in advance the
tasks for the conference event (for example, organizing volunteer participation in manning the registration desk,
signposting of rooms, and helping conference attendees navigate the buildings).
Benefits to the intern:
The intern will gain the following skills and experience:
- organisational and time management skills through experience in coordinating an international conference and
coordinating the tasks of student volunteers
- project management and team work skills
- development of effective oral and written communication skills through experience in communicating with
participants from many different countries
- experience of creating and designing a conference programme
- problem solving and taking initiative
- sense of responsibility and confidence in working in an academic environment
- the opportunity to gain experience in attending an international academic conference
Facilities/working environment: There are no accessibility concerns or restrictions.
